Jinjiang (Gold Slurry): Pungent, neutral, non-toxic. Indicated for longevity and immortality. Long-term ingestion causes the intestines to become golden in color.
Gu Jing (Ancient Mirror): Pungent, non-toxic. Indicated for fright-convulsion (Jing Xian) and pathogenic qi. For various severe ailments in children, decoct to obtain the juice and administer with other herbs. Older specimens are preferred.
Lao Tie (Rusty Iron): Indicated for Zefeng (sudden wind pathogens). Heat until red-hot, immerse in wine, and drink while warm. The variety commonly used in formulas is sour and pungent iron, i.e., pig iron.
Shen Dan (Divine Elixir): Pungent, warm, slightly toxic. Indicated for myriad diseases. Prepared by combining calcined minerals and other drugs according to the cold or heat nature of the condition. Promotes longevity and immortality.
Tie Xiu (Iron Rust): Indicated for malignant sores, scabies, and tinea. Apply mixed with oil. For bites from spiders or insects, grind with garlic and apply topically. This refers to rust on the surface of iron. Rust formed on iron is usable.
Bu Zhen (Cloth Needle): Indicated for dystocia (transverse presentation). Heat until red-hot, soak in wine seven times, and ingest. Select two cloth needles and heat them thoroughly. Coarse cloth needles used for sewing fabric are suitable.
Tong Pen (Copper Basin): Indicated for Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome). Used for hot compress therapy. Fill with thick ash about two cun deep, place charcoal fire on top to make it slightly warm, cover the patient's abdomen with clothing, and gradually apply heat. Recovery occurs when warmth penetrates the abdomen.
Regarding the sound of the axe when nailing a coffin: When abnormal sensations occur in the body's flesh, one may observe the sound of the axe striking coffin nails. Listen specifically to the sound; upon hearing it, immediately rub the affected area rapidly twenty-seven times. The condition will naturally subside. Contraindicated for postpartum women.
Jia Shang Tie Ding (Iron Nail from Yoke): If a criminal is suddenly pardoned due to an amnesty, remove the iron nail from the yoke. Carrying this nail later can help avoid disaster if one faces legal entanglements.
Huang Yin (Yellow Silver): Su Gong in "Yin Zhu" states that vessels made of it ward off evil and are auspicious objects. However, auspicious objects like silver urns and cinnabar cauldrons are not man-made; since they can be used as vessels, they are not merely auspicious omens. Currently, Wuyin (Black Silver) is used to ward off evil. Craftsmen use it for vessels, and health-preservers use it to decoct medicine. It is hung high in the courtyard at night to collect dew, which is then drunk to prolong life. Modern Wuyin is made by fumigating silver with sulfur for two nights, turning it black. This is fake, not real.
Shi Huang (Xiong Huang / Realgar): Su Gong in "Xiong Huang Zhu" states it is commonly called Huang Shi. Realgar is obtained by breaking open Shi Huang and selecting the bright, pure parts; the outer black part is Xun Huang. It treats malignant sores and kills parasites. Used to fumigate sores, scabies, lice, and for coughing treatments mixed with other herbs. Realgar from Wudu does not smell when burned, whereas Xun Huang does; this distinguishes them. Su Gong’s claim that they are all called Huang Shi is incorrect.
Shi Pi (Mang Xiao / Nuxiao): Tao Hongjing in "Mang Xiao Zhu" states that Shi Pi is processed into Nuxiao by boiling in water. One hu of Shi Pi yields three dou, white as snow. Stones dissolve in it, hence the name Nuxiao. Stone Pi, Mang Xiao, and Nuxiao grow together in the saline lands of Western Regions, formed from salty water; their origins are similar.
Zhu Jin (Various Metals) are Toxic: Raw gold has strong toxicity and can cause death if ingested. It is found in caves in Lingnan inhabited by Yi and Liao tribes, resembling red-black crushed stones or iron feces. Southerners say it contains venom from shed snake skins, snakes resting on rocks, or vulture droppings on rocks, causing the rock to fragment and become toxic. Collecting these toxic spots yields raw gold. Thus, Cihuang (Orpiment) and Xionghuang (Realgar) are toxic, and raw gold belongs to the same category. Snake antidotes treat poisoning from mineral drugs; see the "Jin She" article for diagnostic methods. The statement in "Ben Jing" that gold is toxic is a major error. Raw gold is completely different from refined gold.
Shui Zhong Shi Zi (Water Pebbles): Non-toxic. Indicated for abdominal distension, formation of masses (Jia), pain, distress, inability to eat or drink, and wasting after consuming fish. Take dozens of pebbles, heat until red-hot, immerse in five sheng of water seven times each, and drink while hot. Repeat three to five times to expel the mass through defecation.
Shi Qi (Stone Lacquer): Can be burned for candles and ointments. Resembles lacquer in half a vat; inedible. It is the essence of water and stone and should have therapeutic effects. Records in "Bowuzhi" mention stone water from Jiuluan South Mountain, resembling fatty juice, solidifying like grease, black as lacquer. Locals call it Shi Qi. No specific formula is found currently, which is regrettable.
Shao Shi Ling Chi (Heated Stones): Heat stones until red-hot, immerse in water, add a small amount of salt. Indicated for Feng Sao Yin Zhen (wind-induced urticaria/pruritus) and for washing. Alternatively, take egg-sized stones, heat intensely, immerse in vinegar ten-plus times until crushed. Dry the powder, mix with vinegar, and apply to swellings. Case study: Ma Siming, physician of Northern Qi, cured back abscesses and various malignant swellings using common stones.
Shi Yao (Stone Medicine): Bitter, cold, non-toxic. Indicated for fractures, internal trauma, blood stasis. Alleviates severe distress and impending death when taken with wine. Southern locals apply it to poisoned arrowheads. For bites by large pit vipers in deep mountains, quickly cut the hair on the patient's crown in a cross shape to induce bleeding, apply herb powder to the wound and surrounding area. The toxin attacks upward and downward, excreting several sheng of yellow fluid, relieving distress. Locals carry it on their waists to prevent snakebite. Also treats malignant sores, heat-toxin carbuncles, erysipelas, and erosive ulcers. Northerners call swelling "You". Mix with water and apply. Sourced from Shishang Mountain in Hezhou, resembling crushed sand, stored in bamboo tubes by locals.
Yan Zhu Shi Chui (Grinding Vermilion Stone Hammer): Indicated for Du Ru (milk stasis/mastitis). Heat and apply to breasts. Use two hammers alternately, cover breasts with cloth, allow heat to penetrate for dozens of repetitions until cured.
