Non-toxic. Produced by dampness.
*Helix pomatia* (Snail) [1] primarily treats *zei feng* (thief wind, a type of pathogenic wind causing sudden paralysis or pain), hemiplegia [2], rectal prolapse following trauma, tendon spasm, and convulsive epilepsy (Recorded by famous physicians). [Name] Li Niu. [Origin] *Tu Jing* states: Grows in ponds and marshes of Mount Tai, in sandy stones of shady places, and under the walls of houses; it is now found everywhere. Tao Hongjing noted: The snail resembles *Agriolimax agrestis* (Slug) but carries a shell on its back. This is what Zhuangzi referred to as "war on the tip of a snail's horn." After long rain clears up, they often appear among bamboo forests and pools. There is a flat and small variety found under city walls that lacks potency and is unsuitable for use. Snails are most effective in pediatric medicines. They hide inside their shells. [Growth Time] No fixed time. [Harvest Time] No fixed time. [Selection Criteria] Those with round and large bodies are superior. [Texture] Similar to slugs but bearing a shell. [Color] Bluish-white. [Taste] Salty. [Nature] Cold and soft. [Qi] Qi is thin, flavor is strong, Yin nature. [Odor] Fishy. [Action] Disperses wind-heat, reduces carbuncles and swelling. [Processing] Stir-fry before use, or crush to extract juice. [Treatment] *Tu Jing* records: Snail mucus treats *xiao ke* (wasting-thirst syndrome/diabetes). *Bie Lu* records: Burn twenty snail shells to ash, grind finely, and rub on teeth each time to treat toothache caused by cold. When rectal prolapse occurs due to defecation and cannot be retracted: Take 200 snails, place them in a small clean bottle, add one cup of freshly drawn water, seal tightly, soak from evening until morning. Remove the snails, retain the mucus-like fluid, mix with true clam powder in any proportion, apply immediately using a feather brush. Treats dorsal carbuncle; can be applied more than ten times a day. Once heat and pain cease, the ulcer heals. Take ten snail shells, wash away dust, dry them, place in lard and honey, store in a porcelain box, steam inside a rice steamer lined with paper. Remove when rice is cooked, grind finely, and consume gradually over one day. Treats all types of *gan* disease (malnutrition/parasitic infection) in children.
Slightly toxic. Oviparous.
*Shi Long Zi* (Stone Dragon Lizard) [3] primarily treats *wu long* (five types of strangury/urinary difficulty), pathogenic stagnant qi, breaks *shi lin* (gravel stranguria), stops lower bleeding, and promotes urination through the water passages (*Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing*). [Name] Xi Yi (Pronunciation: Xi/Yi), Shou Gong, Shi Yi, Rong Yuan (Pronunciation: Yan), Ting (Pronunciation: Dian), She Yi, Hui Yi, Ci Yi (Pronunciation: Lu), KT (Pronunciation: Chan), Yi Xi, Shan Long Zi. [Origin] *Tu Jing* states: Grows in valleys of Pingyang and among rocks at Mount Jing; it is now found everywhere. *Er Ya* states: Rong Yuan, Xi Yi, Ting, and Shou Gong are the same creature, similar in shape but with different names. *Zi Lin* states: Rong Yuan is She Yi. *Shuo Wen* states: In grass it is called Xi Yi; on walls it is called Ting. In Qin, Jin, and Western Xia regions, it is called Shou Gong, or KT, or Ci Yi. People in Nanyang call the Ting found in marshes Yi Xi; Chu region calls it She Yi. Dongfang Shuo said: It is either Shou Gong or Xi Yi. According to these explanations, those in grass and marshes are named Rong Yuan and Xi Yi, while those on walls are named Ting and Shou Gong. Emperor Wu of Han captured Xi Yis on the Wu day, fed them cinnabar until their bodies turned completely red. On the same day the following year, they were crushed and applied to palace women's arms like red moles; if the women committed adultery, the mark would disappear, hence the name Shou Gong (Guarding Palace). *Yan Yi* records: Large ones are seven or eight inches long, with golden-green colors. During Emperor Renzong's reign, a lizard was seen digging ditches west of the Right Ye Gate in the temple; this was a true lizard. Premier Zheng wrote a poem: A woodcutter once saw a lizard drinking from a stream crevice, entering and exiting repeatedly over a hundred times. Suspecting it, the woodcutter flipped the stone and found two or three sheng of hail. Astonished, he left. Three or five li away, heavy rain, wind, and hail struck. Thus, it is now used for praying for rain. The Canon states: Treats *wu long*, breaks *shi lin*, promotes urination, which aligns with this meaning. [Growth Time] No fixed time. [Harvest Time] Harvest in March, April, May, August, September. [Selection Criteria] Those with golden-green body color. [Color] Green. [Taste] Salty. [Nature] Cold. [Qi] Qi is thin, flavor is strong, Yin nature. [Odor] Fishy. [Action] Resolves various strangurias, dissipates stagnant qi. [Antagonism] Adversely affected by Rhizoma Realgar (Liu Huang), Mylabris (Ban Mao), and Radix Descurainiae (Wu Ti). [Processing] Remove internal organs, roast over fire until dry, then grind finely; or place on stones to dry.
