[Properties] Non-toxic. Grows in rocks.
Eguan Shi (Goose Tube Stone): Mainly treats cough, phlegm-wheezing, and various coughs in children (this entry is a later addition). [Origin] According to research, this stone is produced in Shu and Lingnan regions; currently, it is also found in Licheng County, Jinan. [Morphology] Two to three cun in length, round in shape with layered, crisscross textures, white in color, brittle and easy to break, hollow inside like a tube, hence the name Eguan Shi. [Collection] Can be collected at any time. [Selection] Those that are hollow, transparent, and clean are preferred. [Texture] Similar to Shizhongru (Stalactite) but extremely small. [Color] White. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Neutral. [Qi] The qi is thin, belonging to Yin within Yang.
Yun Shi (Ringed Stone): Non-toxic. Mainly treats Shi Lin (lithuria); grind and take orally; or calcine until red-hot and administer in wine. Grows on the seabed, resembling Jiang Shi (Ginger Stone), purple-brown in color, extremely dense like stone, formed by the condensation of saline water, naturally exhibiting ring patterns.
Liuhuang Xiang (Flowing Yellow Fragrance): Aromatic, pungent, warm, non-toxic. Removes foul odors, dispels cold, kills parasites. Resembles Liuhuang but has an aroma. Foreign legends from the Wu period state that Liuhuang Xiang originates from Dukun State, located 3,000 li south of Funan. *Nanzhou Yiwuzhi* records that Liuhuang Xiang comes from countries along the South China Sea coast; currently used in China, it is imported from the Western Rong region.
Baishi Zi (White Lion): Mainly treats Baihu Bing (White Tiger Disease, i.e., Lijie Feng/Joint Bi). People in the east call it Lijie Feng. Placing Baishi Zi before the patient can cure the disease spontaneously, based on the principle of "suppressing" evil spirits. Ancient texts describe the Baihu ghost as resembling a cat in a dung heap, or being the God of Dung. Currently, people should not place swept dung near doorways to avoid illness. This treatment method involves wiping the painful area of the patient with a chicken egg, reciting incantations and vows, then sending the egg to the top of a dung heap without looking back.
Xuanhuang Shi (Black-Yellow Stone): Sweet, neutral, warm, non-toxic. Mainly treats fright, fever, and pathogenic factors; calms the heart and spirit. Long-term use brightens the eyes and improves complexion. Produced in the rocky valleys of Zichuan and Beihai, similar to Chitu (Red Earth) and Daizhe (Hematite). Also known as Lingling. When ground extremely fine and taken orally, it resembles Daizhe Tu. Locals use it as a substitute for Zhusha (Cinnabar), calling it Chishi (Red Stone); it is likely a type of Daizhe. It has not yet been widely used.
Shilangan (Stone Railing): Pungent, neutral, non-toxic. Mainly treats Shi Lin (lithuria), blood stasis, and postpartum lochia retention; grind and take orally, or decoct and drink. It can also be calcined and administered in wine. Grows on the seabed, over one chi high, tree-like, with eye-like structures and pores on the stems, resembling puncture marks. Fishermen catch it with nets; it is slightly red when first retrieved from water, gradually turning green.
Boli (Glass/Crystal): Pungent, cold, non-toxic. Mainly treats palpitations and heart heat; calms the mind, brightens the eyes, removes redness from eyes, and compresses hot swellings. This is a treasure of Western countries. Some say it is made by the King of Water, others claim it is melted thousand-year ice, belonging to the jade category, growing in rocks and soil, not necessarily ice. Current Jingzhu (Rock Crystal) of high quality is very bright and invisible when placed in water. Compressing the eyes removes hot tears. Some say Huisui Zhu (Fire Flint Pearl) generates fire by focusing sunlight.
Shisui (Stone Marrow): Sweet, warm, non-toxic. Mainly treats chills and fever, emaciation, pallor, accumulations, abdominal distension and fullness, indigestion, dry skin, frequent and urgent urination, masses, borborygmus, diarrhea, cold pain in waist and legs, male impotence, female infertility, and qi-blood imbalance. Promotes robustness, appetite, and healing of metal wounds. Its nature is obstructive/stagnating, suitable for those with cold-type emaciation. Grows in cave rocks of Huagai Mountain, Linhai. Locals harvest it, clarify and wash it into mud, form it into pills the size of quail eggs; yellow ones are superior.
Pilei Zhen (Thunderbolt Needle): Non-toxic. Mainly treats severe fright causing loss of heart-mind, confusion, and inability to recognize people, as well as lower lithuria; grind and take orally or decoct. This object is dug up three chi deep where lightning has struck. Shapes vary. Some say it is man-made and offered to the Heavenly Court, but facts are unknown. Current specimens resemble axe blades, file blades, or have two holes; some are made from common stones. Notes indicate production in Leizhou and Hedong mountain/water areas. After thunderstorms, many resemble axes, are black-green with mottled patterns, hard as jade. Used as pillows to dispel demonic dreams and ward off misfortune, named Pilei Xie (Thunderbolt Dust/Fragment).
Da Shi (Large Stone): Stabilizes the residence, preventing disasters. *Zhaijing* (Classic of Dwellings) suggests using large stones to stabilize the four corners of a house. *Jingchu Suishiji* (Chronicles of Jingchu Customs) records that at the end of the twelfth lunar month, one should dig the four corners of the residence and bury a large stone in each to stabilize the dwelling. *Hongbao Wanbi Shu* states that burying pill-shaped stones in the four corners and beating seven peach pits will prevent ghosts from causing harm.
Jinshi (Metal Stone): Sweet, non-toxic. Mainly treats long-term emaciation, anorexia, and pallor; tonifies coldness in waist and legs, promotes robustness, and benefits Yang. For sudden heat and hair loss, consume after sublimation/refining. Sourced from Jinshi in the rocks of Qingliang Temple, Wutai Mountain; historically appears reddish-brown.
Yugao (Jade Paste): Sweet, neutral, non-toxic. (Wushi/Five Stones) Mainly extends life; a technique of immortals. Alchemists take Chan Chu Gao (Toad Ointment) and soft jade like mud, dissolving it in Ku Jiu (bitter wine/vinegar) to form water, which becomes paste. This is the method for making paste. Drinking water from between jade stones today promotes longevity and moistens the body. Throwing jade into Zhucao (Vermilion Grass) juice turns it into sweet wine. Zhucao is an auspicious plant, mentioned in *Jinshui Juan*. *Shizhou Xianji* (Records of Immortals of the Ten Continents) notes that Yingzhou has a Yugao Spring resembling wine; drinking several cups induces drunkenness and longevity. Many immortals reside there, resembling the fairy tales told by Wu children. Although these fairyland stories may have basis, they are cited here as evidence.
Wen Shi (Warm Stone) and Burnt Bricks: Treat the above conditions. Heat penetrates to the waist and abdomen. For chronic lower coldness, chronic dysentery with white pus from intestines/abdomen, apply hot burnt bricks and Wen Shi for fomentation and sitz baths; all resolve. Simply heating hard stones is sufficient; there is no specific "Wen Shi."
Yinzhi (Sealed Paper): Non-toxic. Mainly induces sterility in women who wish to have no children. Cut the part with the seal, burn to ash, and take with water (one qian bi dose); miraculous effect.
Yanyao (Smoke Medicine): Pungent, warm, toxic. Mainly treats scrofula, five types of hemorrhoids, goiter, tumor roots, malignant swellings. Formula: Shihuang, Kongqing, Guixin each 4 liang; Ganjiang 1 liang. Grind into powder. Take a 5-cun wide iron sheet, heat until red-hot, place medicine on it, cover with a porcelain bowl coated with lard on the bottom. The medicine flies onto the bowl bottom. Cool and open. Repeat five times. Insert medicine amount equivalent to a mouse droppings into the wound pore, seal the surface. After three applications, the root emerges. If no pore exists, pierce it first.
Te Peng Sha: Pungent, bitter, warm, slightly toxic. Mainly used for refining metals/minerals in alchemy; raw material required. From Western countries, resembling Oyster Powder or edible fat. Capable of penetrating metals, stones, and iron without obstruction; conducts downward.
Apo Zhaorong: Two medicines, slightly toxic. Mainly treat ding zhong (carbuncles/furuncles) and malignant sores, extracting roots, eroding polyps and flesh spurs. People in Qi combine Baigeshi (White Ginger Stone), dog feces, crimson silk, and thorn hooks to make a hard earth paste like ink, formed into pills. Another Apo Zhaorong medicine has identical effects, said to be made from Duanshi (Smelted Iron) mixed with various insects, crimson silk, and thorns. Both originate from Linzi and Qizhou.
Liuyue Hezhong Zhu Resha (Hot Sands from Rivers in June): Mainly treats wind-damp stubborn bi, numbness, tendon contraction, cold pain in feet, wind-induced abscesses, slack pulses, and severed meridians. Take dry sand, sun-dry until extremely hot, and sit upon it. Replace when cool. Allow heat to penetrate thoroughly and induce sweating. Then, administer medicine and diet according to the condition, avoiding wind, cold, and labor.
