The root of *Hosta ventricosa* (Yuzan flower) crushed for juice treats various bone obstructions in the throat (fishbones stuck in the throat). (Added now) [Name] Baihehua (White Crane Flower) [Seedling] According to careful examination, this is indeed the Baihehua. The seedling is over one chi tall, leaves grow at the stem tip, pale green. In June and July, stems sprout and branch, producing several stamens/pistils two or three cun long, with a clear fragrance, bright white, shaped like a hairpin, hence named Yuzan flower (Jade Hairpin Flower). Picked before blooming, used to coat flour and pan-fry, it is fat, smooth, fragrant, and delicious. By autumn, pods form, four valves like *Iris lactea* seeds, fruits like elm seeds but narrower and longer. Another variety has identical stems, leaves, and floral parts but is shorter, deep green, with purple flowers smelling somewhat foul, inedible, called Zihe (Purple Crane), also known as Ziyuzan (Purple Jade Hairpin). In August, horns form like *Mantis ootheca*, six valves, seeds like elm seeds but black and shiny as lacquer. For those suffering from bone obstruction, take its root, crush for juice, inhale into the throat via a reed tube; effective. During inhalation, be careful not to touch teeth, otherwise teeth may become loose and fall out. If purple ones are unavailable, white ones can substitute. [Habitat] Found everywhere. This is the blue vegetable from the Western Regions, with broad edible leaves. To treat yellow toxin, make pickles; after overnight soaking, the color turns yellow; eat with salt to remove stagnant qi under the heart. ○ *Bencao Jing Jiu Yi* states: (Ganlan vegetables made into minced pickles or boiled for eating are both suitable. ○ Grown widely in Longxi and eaten; rare in Han regions; excessive consumption causes reduced sleep.)
Non-toxic, aquatic.
*Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides* (Shuiying) primarily treats men and women with unexplained swelling and fullness in both feet extending to knees and shins, pain, and stiff/rigid flexion-extension, named Gu Feng (Bone Wind). This condition is unsuitable for acupuncture and moxibustion, and medication is generally avoided. Only decocting this herb alone for soaking is effective; recovery occurs within five days, showing miraculous results each time. Use five or six jin, boil in one dan of water until reduced to three dou. Soak feet and pour over knees while hot, three to four times day and night, frequently using until cured. If swelling is severe, add three sheng of raw *Zanthoxylum bungeanum* seeds (Sheng Jiaomu) to the above formula, add two large dou of water, boil as before to extract juice, pour over sores/swelling to subside with the liquid, then apply powder massage, avoid wind, which is good.
