Jiadie (Fadfly) primarily treats prolapse of the rectum in children. Dry it in the shade, grind it into powder, mix with saliva, apply half a qian to the palm of the hand, and continue until healed. (From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Names] (Pronounced "Ye"). Die, Hudie (Butterfly).
(Li Shizhen stated) Jiadie flies with light, thin wings held together. Indeed, the beauty of Hudie lies in its antennae, while the beauty of E (Moth) lies in its eyebrows; hence it is also called Hudie, where colloquially "antennae" are referred to as "Hu".
[Habitat] (*Gujin Zhu*) states that citrus borers transform into butterflies. (*Erya Yi*) states that vegetable caterpillars transform into butterflies. (*Liezi*) states that leaves of Wu Zu transform into butterflies. (*Pi Ya*) states that vegetables transform into butterflies. (*Youyang Zazu*) states that lily flowers transform into butterflies. (*Beihu Lu*) states that tree leaves transform into butterflies, colorful as paintings. (*Yeshi*) states that colored skirts transform into butterflies. These are all statements based on individual observations. In fact, one should not know that various insects such as bookworms eventually molt into butterflies or moths when old, just as silkworms must undergo pupation. Rotting clothes inevitably breed insects which transform, while the transformation of plant flowers and leaves is due to Qi transformation and wind transformation. (Yang Shen in *Danqian Lu* said) There are grass butterflies and water butterflies, with water butterflies living in water. (*Lingnan Yiwu Zhi* stated) A person floating in the South Sea saw a fadfly as large as a rattan sail, weighing eighty jin, whose meat was extremely fat and delicious when eaten.
[Seasonality] (Growth) Spring, Summer, and Autumn. (Collection) Collect in Spring, Summer, and Autumn. [Usage] Use the whole insect. [Nature/Quality] (Li Shizhen stated) Butterflies and moths belong to the same category; those large are called butterflies, those small are called moths. Their species are numerous, all having four powdery wings, fond of smelling floral fragrance, using antennae instead of noses. They mate via their antennae, and the powder fades after mating.
[Color] There are five colors, varying according to the insects they feed on, the flowers and leaves consumed, and the objects from which they transformed.
[Therapeutic Actions] (Li Shizhen stated) Butterfly was not seen used in ancient formulas. Only *Puji Fang* records the aforementioned formula for treating rectal prolapse, but it is unknown which type of butterfly is used.
Zao Mao (Date Cat / Date Moth Larva) primarily treats umbilical convulsions (Umbilical Wind) in children. (From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Habitat] Flying insects living on date trees.
[Seasonality] (Growth) Summer and Autumn. (Collection) Collect in Summer and Autumn. [Storage] Dry in the shade after collection for use. [Usage] Use the whole insect. [Nature/Quality] Large as a jujube, with two horns. [Color] Bluish-gray.
[Comprehensive Treatment] (Li Shizhen stated) Zao Mao has no record in ancient formulas. In recent times, *Fang Guang · Danxi Xinfa Fuyu* records the treatment for infant umbilical convulsions: At birth, wrap the umbilical cord with cotton, tie it tightly about five or six cun away from the navel, bite off the cord, and deliver one or two fen of medicine into the large hole of the umbilicus using a goose quill tube, gently massaging to disperse. Then moxibustion with three moxa cones on the umbilicus head. Tie it securely without shaking, wait for it to fall off naturally, ensuring no risk of umbilical convulsions thereafter, infallible. It is suitable for those with a hard umbilicus; those with a soft umbilicus have no disease and do not need it. The method involves grinding dried Zao Mao into powder (three units), crushing pearl mother-of-pearl finely (forty-nine grains), frying Huangdan (Lead Oxide) until yellow (five fen), along with Baikufan (Alum), Gafen (Concha Meretrix), and Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) each at five fen. Grind uniformly and apply as described above. The umbilicus has three holes: one large and two small.
