Rhododendron molle (Yangzhizhu, 羊踯躅), grows in the valleys of the Taihang Mountains and the Huai Mountains; it is now found everywhere. In spring, shoots emerge resembling Luchong (Crinum asiaticum); leaves resemble Honghua (Safflower flowers); stems are three to four chi high. Flowers bloom in summer, resembling Lingxiao (Campsis grandiflora), Shanshiliu (Pomegranate flower), and Xuanfu (Inula japonica), but with a pure yellow color. If sheep accidentally eat its leaves, they wander aimlessly until death, hence the name "Yangzhizhu" (Goat's Hesitation). Collect flowers in March and April, dry in shade. Now, deep red varieties grow abundantly in the valleys of Lingnan and Shu roads, looking like brocade. Some say this variety is not used in medicine. Ancient major formulas often used Yangzhizhu, such as Huguazhi's Chisan for epidemic fevers, Wusou Siman Wan for five coughs and four fullnesses, and various wines for treating wind syndromes, all mixed with it. Also, for treating rheumatism from wind-dampness in hundred diseases, Lu Wang Jiu also uses Yangzhizhu flowers. Currently, many prescriptions use it in Luojiao Tang (Foot-Soaking Decoction). In the south, Zhi Zhu Hua San (Rhododendron Flower Powder) is very effective for treating gu poison (parasitic disease) and bloody stool.
Skimmia reevesiana (Yinyu, 茵芋), originates from the valleys of Mount Tai; it is now also found in Yongzhou, Jiangzhou, Huazhou, and Hangzhou. In spring, shoots emerge, three to four chi high, with red stems. Leaves resemble pomegranate leaves but are shorter and thicker, and also similar to Shinan (Pyrrosia lingua) leaves. Small white flowers bloom in April; fruits form in May. Collect leaves with thin stems in March, April, and July, dry in shade for use, or some say sun-dry. Huguazhi treats Zeifeng (Thief Wind, external wind pathogen causing numbness and pain), resulting in withered limbs and spasms. Yinyu Jiu (Yinyu Wine) is indicated. The formula consists of Yinyu, Fuzi, Tianxiong, Wutou, Qinjiao (Gentiana macrophylla), Nuwei (Polygonatum odoratum root), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia divaricata), Fangji (Stephania tetrandra), Yangzhizhu, Shinan, Xixin (Asarum), and Guixin (Cinnamon twig bark), each one liang. Total twelve ingredients, chopped, placed in a silk bag, soaked in one dou of clear wine. Soak for seven days in winter, three days in summer, five days in spring and autumn. When ready, take one ge initially, three times a day. Gradually increase the dose until mild numbness is achieved.
