Chi Di Li (Red Groundcover), old texts do not record the specific provinces or regions of origin, stating that it grows in valleys and mountains everywhere, but currently only Huashan produces it. In spring and summer, seedlings emerge, growing as vines winding around trees and shrubs; the stems are red; the leaves are green, resembling those of buckwheat; white flowers bloom in July, also similar to buckwheat flowers; the roots resemble Smilax glabra (Ba Qian), with black skin and yellowish-red flesh; roots are harvested within August and dried for use. It is also known as Shan Qiao Mai (Mountain Buckwheat). Below this entry, there is another section on Chi Che Shi Zhe (Achyranthes bidentata) which states: It resembles Xiang Ru (Elsholtzia splendens) and Lan Xiang (Pogostemon cablin), with red leaves and stems, and purplish-red roots, growing in the shade of stream valleys, originating from Xiangzhou. Roots are harvested in August and September and sun-dried. Ancient prescriptions treat severe wind-damp bi-syndrome using wine prepared with Chi Che Shi Zhe. It is rarely used by people today, and few recognize it. Therefore, it is appended here.
Chi Che Shi Zhe, textual content is listed under the Chi Di Li entry.
Liu Ji Nu Cao (Artemisia annua var. annua or related species), grows in the Jiangnan region; currently also found in Hezhong Prefecture, Mengzhou, and Hanzhong. Seedlings emerge in spring; the stems resemble Ai Hao (Mugwort), having four edges, reaching a height of two to three chi; leaves are green and willow-like; small yellow-white flowers bloom in April, shaped like Sedum aizoon (Wa Song); fruits form in July, resembling millet but finer, with several spikelets growing alternately on one stem; roots are pale purple, resembling Lactuca sativa (Wojú). Harvested in June and July. The seedlings, flowers, and seeds are all commonly used.
Qian Niu Zi (Pharbitis nil seed / Ipomoea batatas seed - *Note: Context implies Pharbitis nil/Convolvulus arvensis type*), old texts do not specify the province or land of origin; it is now found everywhere. Seeds are sown in February; seedlings emerge in March, growing as vines winding around fences and walls, reaching heights of two to three zhang; leaves are green with three pointed angles; flowers appear in July, slightly red with a greenish tint, larger than Drum-flower (Calystegia hederacea); fruits form in August, covered by a white outer skin forming a ball shape. Each ball contains four or five seeds, the size of buckwheat, with three edges, available in black and white varieties. Harvested after September. Also known as Jin Ling. Duan Chengshi's "Youyang Zazu" states: Pen Zeng Cao (Basin Steamer Grass) is Qian Niu Zi. After the Autumn Festival, when broken, its shape resembles a basin steamer. The seeds inside resemble turtles, and the vines resemble sweet potatoes, referring to this plant.
