Chishizhi (Red Halloysite), produced in Jinan, Sheyang, and the north side of Mount Tai. Su Gong stated: It is not heard to be produced in Jinan and Mount Tai; rather, it is found in Lushi County of Guozhou, Lingchuan County of Zezhou, Lüxiang County of Cizhou, as well as in various mountains of Yizhou. Currently, it is mainly produced in Luzhou. The best quality is characterized by bright color and fine texture, and it can be harvested at any time. Ancient people also consumed Chishizhi alone. *Rushi Lun* (Treatise on Mineral Drugs) records that after taking Chishizhi, if heart pain occurs, drinking hot wine does not relieve it; the treatment involves wrapping scallion white and fermented soybean (Douchi) in silk, boiling them in water, and drinking the decoction. *Qianjin Yi Fang* (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas) discusses treating phlegm-fluid retention causing vomiting of clear fluid at any time. The root cause is excessive consumption of cold-frozen beverages, which weakens the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach, impairing their ability to digest food. When food enters the stomach, it turns into cold water, leading to continuous vomiting. All such cases are treated with Chishizhi San (Red Halloysite Powder). One jin (approx. 500g) of Chishizhi is crushed and sifted. Each dose is one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure), taken with wine or water as desired, gradually increasing to three measures. After consuming one jin, the patient will never again vomit clear fluid nor suffer from dysentery; it tonifies the Five Zang Organs and makes the person robust and healthy. A person suffering from Dan Yin (Pale Fluid Retention) who failed to respond to other medicines was cured using this formula. In mixed formulations, Zhang Zhongjing used Taohua Tang (Peach Blossom Decoction) to treat Shanghan (Cold Damage) with persistent diarrhea and pus-blood in the stool. The prescription uses one jin of Chishizhi: half used whole, half ground into powder; one liang (approx. 30g) of Ganjiang (Dried Ginger); and half sheng (approx. 100ml volume) of Jingmi (Rice). Boil these in seven sheng (approx. 1400ml) of water until the rice is cooked. Strain the dregs. Take seven ge (approx. 140ml) of the liquid per dose, adding one fangcun bi of Chishizhi powder. Take three times daily. Stop taking it when symptoms cease; otherwise, consume the entire preparation. There is also Wutou Chishizhi Wan (Aconite and Red Halloysite Pill), indicated for heart pain radiating to the back. It consists of one fen (approx. 0.6g) of Wutou (Aconite Root), two fen of Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root Child), both processed; and four fen each of Chishizhi, Ganjiang, and Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper). These five substances are pounded into powder, mixed with honey to form pills the size of a wu zi (pills similar to Chinese apricot seeds). Take one pill before meals. If ineffective, gradually increase the dosage.
Baishizhi (White Halloysite), produced on the north side of Mount Tai. Su Gong stated: It is produced in the mountains of Cizhou, but not heard of on the left side of Mount Tai. Currently, it is only available in Luzhou. Since Luzhou is close to Cizhou, the product from here should also be usable. It was frequently used in ancient formulas for stopping discharge, but modern physicians rarely use it. It can be harvested at any time. In older texts, the Five-Colored Shizhi were listed under a single entry, all produced in the sunny valleys of Mount Nan, with identical therapeutic effects. Later authors separated them; since their origins differ, their functions also vary, so they should be used according to subsequent entries. However, currently only the Red and White varieties are used, while others are no longer recognized. In the Tang Dynasty, Wei Zhou’s *Duxing Fang* (Independent Traveler’s Formulas) treated infants with continuous oozing from the umbilicus accompanied by redness and swelling. Fine powder of Baishizhi was heated and applied to the umbilicus three times daily, yielding good results. Additionally, *Doumen Fang* (Dou Gate Formulas) treated diarrhea and dysentery using Baishizhi and Ganjiang. These two ingredients were pounded together, mixed with boiling water and flour to form a thin paste, kneaded evenly, and shaped by hand into pills the size of wu zi. They were dried in the sun. Take thirty pills with water. For chronic dysentery that does not resolve, add another thirty pills. For Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome), use Jiangshui (Fermented Rice Water) as the vehicle.
