Tonify Deficiency and Fatigue
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Chickens belong to Wood in the Five Elements, but those with black bones belong to Water. Having absorbed the essence of both Water and Wood, they can tonify the Liver and Kidney, clear heat, and supplement deficiency. They are used to treat deficiency-fatigue accompanied by Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome), dysentery leading to Jin Kou (inability to eat due to nausea/stomach weakness) (boiled juice benefits the Stomach), leukorrhea, and Beng Zhong (uterine bleeding), as well as diseases of the Blood aspect of the Liver and Kidney. For sudden death caused by Gui Ji (demon strike/acute trauma), applying its blood to the area below the heart is effective (Records from Kui Che Zhi: Xiahou Hong caught a small demon and asked what it was holding. The demon replied, "I kill people with this spear and halberd; those struck in the center of the chest or abdomen die immediately." Hong asked, "Is there a method to treat this?" The demon said, "Applying black chicken will cure it."). Those with both flesh and bones black are of good quality; if the tongue is black, the flesh and bones are also black. Use female chickens for male patients and male chickens for female patients (Gynecology includes Wu Ji Wan [Black Chicken Pill], which treats various diseases).
Nourish Yin
Sweet in flavor, cold in nature. Enters the Blood aspect of the Lung and Kidney. It nourishes Yin, supplements deficiency, clears steaming bone sensation, stops coughing, promotes urination, and treats hot dysentery. Ducks with white feathers and black bones are considered the supreme remedy for deficiency-fatigue, taking the imagery of Metal's austerity and Water's coldness (Ge Kejiu created Bai Feng Gao [White Phoenix Paste]). Older ducks are better. They can be boiled with wine or urine from a prepubescent boy. Their fresh blood can detoxify poisons from gold, silver, cinnabar/mineral stones, arsenic, etc., as well as treat Zhong E (sudden evil invasion) and drowning deaths.
Eggs are sweet and salty, slightly cold. They can nourish Yin and clear heat in the Heart, abdomen, and diaphragm. Preserved with salt, they are beneficial when eaten.
Disperse, Move Blood, Relieve Pain
Sweet in flavor, warm in nature, purely Yin. The aroma and taste are strong. Enters the Blood aspect of the Liver Meridian. It unblocks and benefits the vessels, disperses stasis, and harmonizes blood. For blood obstruction, raw use promotes flow (raw use); for excessive menstruation, fried use stops bleeding (fried use). It treats Xue Bi (blood bi-syndrome), blood accumulation, blood eye, bloody dysentery, Chang Feng (intestinal wind), Beng Zhong, and all blood disorders (Tu Jing states: for Xue Yun [blood fainting], mix half fried and half raw Wu Ling Zhi, powder it, and take one qian). It also treats Qi and Blood pain in the heart and abdomen, and all kinds of pain. Furthermore, it dispels wind, resolves phlegm, kills parasites, and reduces accumulations (all pains relate to Wood/Liver; all parasites arise from Wind). It treats Jing Feng (convulsions), Gan Ji (infantile malnutrition), Nue (malaria), Shan (hernia), and injuries from snakes, scorpions, and centipedes. It is contraindicated for those with Blood deficiency without stasis (For snakebite: take 1 liang of Wu Ling Zhi and 5 qian of Xiong Huang, mix with wine to drink, and apply the dregs to the affected area. Li Zhongnan said: Wu Ling Zhi treating Beng Zhong is not a direct treatment. It is a wind-dispelling formula, addressing cases where the Chong and Ren meridians are deficient and attacked by wind damaging Ying and Blood, causing sudden heavy bleeding. This aligns with using Jing Jie and Fang Feng to treat Beng Zhong. Thus, one realizes the profound insight of the ancients. Li Shizhen said: This is another perspective, but it does not address the meaning of Liver deficiency causing Blood stasis and self-generated wind. Note: The Chong Meridian is the Sea of Blood, and the Ren Meridian governs conception. When the Ren Meridian is open and the Chong Meridian is vigorous, menstruation arrives on time, avoiding Beng Lou [metrorrhagia and metrostaxis], and pregnancy is easily achieved). Wu Ling Zhi refers to a bird name in the north; it is actually the feces of the Han Hao Chong (Cold Howling Bird) (i.e., He Dan Bird. It cries at night seeking dawn. In summer, its feathers are colorful, crying "The Phoenix is not as good as me." In winter, its feathers fall, and it howls from the cold, saying "Get through today and tomorrow." Gao Shiqi said: The Yue Ling records that in the second month of winter, it does not cry, which seems inconsistent with the name "Cold Howling"). It is black in color and has a very foul, musky odor. The genuine product resembles a sugar heart and is moist. Grind into powder, fly with wine to remove sand and stone impurities. Raw use moves blood; fried use stops bleeding. It is incompatible with Ren Shen (Ginseng).
