[Soap Pod]
Disperses heat toxicity.
Acrid and warm in nature. Eliminates wind-dampness, removes dirt and grease (thus used for bathing the body and washing the face), and has miraculous efficacy in treating unnamed swellings and sores (regardless of whether it is an unusual ulcer or a malignant toxin, take raw soap pod, remove seeds, husks, and tendons, pound into a paste, mix with strong vinegar, apply externally for immediate cure; if not cured, reapply for remarkable effect. This prescription is not recorded in medical books. It is very convenient for poor people or those in remote areas who suddenly lack medicine, hence it is specially noted here. *Jicheng* states: Calcinate raw soap pod to retain its properties, mix with raw oil and calomel, apply to various malignant sores).
[Palmae Folium Retinens / Palm Leaf]
Astringent, stops bleeding.
Bitter flavor drains heat, astringency consolidates and prevents collapse. Charred to black, it stops bleeding (red color stops upon contact with black, but do not burn excessively. Palmae Folium Retinens, Platycladi Cacumen, and Selaginellae Herba are calcined to retain their properties, formed into pills with rice paste, to treat chronic lower body bleeding. They can also be decocted and taken orally). Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, dysentery with blood, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, hemorrhoids with bleeding, and excessive blood loss. However, it should not be used hastily at the onset of the disease. Old, decayed palm leaf is particularly effective. (More effective when used together with Cortex Capillaris Carbonisatum / Hair Ash).
[Tea]
Drains heat, clears the spirit, aids digestion.
Bitter and sweet, slightly cold in nature. Directs qi downward, aids digestion, removes phlegm-heat, relieves irritability and thirst, clears the head and eyes (because it absorbs the ascending and generating qi of early spring, it has many effects in肃ly clearing the upper jiao. *Tangye Jing* says: Tea is bitter and cold and moves downward, how can it clear the head and eyes? *Mengjian* replies: When heat descends, the upper part naturally becomes clear). Awakens drowsiness (clears the spirit), resolves alcohol toxicity, food stagnation, greasy food, and roasted food toxins, promotes urination and defecation. Drinking more tea consumes fat (most effective at removing oil) but may chill the stomach (thus strong tea can induce vomiting. *Qianjin Fang* treats sudden severe headache as if breaking, which is not caused by cold invasion or wind-stroke, but by phlegm and rebellious qi rushing upward, named Jue Headache. Boil tea alone and drink freely to induce vomiting until bile is expelled, then thirst subsides and recovery occurs). Drinking tea after alcohol directs the medicinal force into the Bladder and Kidney meridians, potentially causing masses, hernia, and edema; it should also be avoided on an empty stomach. (Decocted strongly with equal parts of ginger, named Ginger Tea Drink, treats bloody and non-bloody dysentery. Tea assists yin, ginger assists yang, balancing cold and heat. It can also relieve summerheat, resolve alcohol, and detoxify food). Aged and fine leaves are good; coarse leaves damage the human body.
