[Chuan Bi Xie] (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome)
[Harm] If there is no dampness in the lower part of the body, but rather Yin deficiency with blazing fire, leading to dribbling after urination and pain in the penis, this is a sign of deficiency of True Yin. For lumbar pain caused by Kidney deficiency without dampness, it is not suitable for use, because the Kidney dislikes dryness.
[Benefit] Sweet and neutral in nature, enters the Stomach, Liver, and Bladder meridians. It mainly treats Wind-Cold-Damp Bi syndrome. It can both eliminate old water accumulation in the Bladder and stop enuresis and frequent urination. It dispels Wind-Damp and tonifies the Lower Yuan. Frequent urination and pain inside the penis must be due to heat closure in the Fire Mansion (Small Intestine). The pathology is confined to the Small Intestine, causing the Fire Mansion to become increasingly dry and depleted. This is often due to forced retention during sexual intercourse, leading to stasis and putrefaction obstructing the Small Intestine, thus causing pain. This differs from Lin syndrome. It is advisable to decoct one liang of Chuan Bi Xie stir-fried with salt water and frequently wash the anus with green onion soup, which will lead to recovery. When the Kidney is affected by Earth pathogenic factors, Water becomes deficient. The Liver, carrying Ministerial Fire, retaliates against its mother organ (Kidney). With Chuan Bi Xie promoting dampness excretion, Earth stabilizes its position, and Water is no longer insulted. Although Chuan Bi Xie and Tu Fu Ling (Smilax Glabra Rhizome) differ in appearance, their therapeutic effects are similar. Both remove dampness and dispel wind, clarify turbidity, resolve toxins, and eliminate malignant sores. They also tonify the Lower Jiao. Tea and vinegar should be avoided.
[Processing] Harvest the roots in the second and eighth months, slice them with a sharp knife, and sun-dry for use.
[Tu Fu Ling] (Smilax Glabra Rhizome)
(See Spleen Section)
[Harm] The nature and flavor are cold. Due to Cold-induced Huoluan (cholera-like disorder) with bloating, or Cold-induced regurgitation and vomiting, it should not be taken.
[Benefit] Sweet and cold. Clears vexatious heat, brightens the throat, treats vexatious thirst, vomiting, dysphagia, and regurgitation. Its effect on benefiting the Small Intestine is superior. It detoxifies Pufferfish poison.
[Processing] Dig up thick and fleshy roots in the second and eighth months, sun-dry, remove rootlets, nodes, and reddish-yellow skin. Fresh ones grown in counter-current water have weaker efficacy, or they can be crushed to extract juice for use.
[Heart Section]
(Note: The original text structure places Gao Liang Jiang here, though typically associated with Spleen/Stomach.)
[Gao Liang Jiang] (Galangal Rhizome)
[Harm] Contraindicated in cases of vomiting due to Stomach Fire, Huoluan due to summerheat injury, diarrhea due to Heat-Fire, and heart pain due to Heart deficiency. Because of its acrid, hot, and drying nature, individuals with Deficiency-Cold must take it together with Renshen (Ginseng) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). Using it alone or in large doses violates the Harmonious Qi.
[Benefit] Acrid and warm-hot. Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Liver meridians. Warms the Stomach to treat dysphagia, alleviates heart and abdominal pain, descends Qi and eliminates pathogens, and attacks Malaria caused by Mountain Miasma. To treat heart and spleen pain, use more Galangal. For Cold patterns, use two qian; for Heat patterns, use four to five fen. In heat-clearing formulas, it is used for its acrid-warm ability to descend Qi and relieve pain effectively.
[Processing] Originates from Gaozhou in Lingnan. Harvest roots in the second and third months, stir-fry before medicinal use. Some methods involve stir-frying with Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) and Dongbi Tu (Earth from East Wall).
Hong Dou Kou (Black Cardamom) warms the Lungs and disperses Cold, awakens the Spleen and dries Dampness, aids digestion, and resolves alcohol intoxication. Contraindications and processing methods are the same as above.
