(See the section on the Spleen)
[Harm] Huashi (Talcum, 滑石) has a heavy and descending nature; it can drain Qi from the Upper Jiao and direct it downward. It is originally a herb that benefits orifices and clears summer-heat. If a patient suffers from Spleen deficiency with sinking of Qi, or Yin essence insufficiency causing internal heat, resulting in scanty, red, and painful urination or difficult urination, accompanied by irritability, thirst, and fever due to Yin deficiency with blazing fire and dried-up fluids, its use is strictly contraindicated. In cases of combined Spleen and Kidney deficiency, even if diarrhea occurs, it should not be taken. For patients with Shanghan (Cold Damage disease) requiring release of the exterior, it is particularly taboo. When pathogenic factors are present at the exterior, using such draining and heavy-descending agents will inevitably cause the pathogens to sink deeper into the interior, leading to critical failure syndromes.
[Benefits] Huashi (Talcum, 滑石) is sweet, bland, and cold in nature, entering the Lung, Spleen, Kidney, and Bladder meridians. It promotes urination, moves accumulated stagnation, opens the blockage of the nine orifices, and unblocks the knotting of the six Fu organs. Huashi (Talcum, 滑石) benefits orifices, not just those for urination. Superiorly, it benefits the hair follicles and skin pores; inferiorly, it benefits the essence orifices. It is an agent that sweeps away heat and dries dampness, hence it is required for clearing summer-heat.
[Processing] There is no fixed time for harvesting. For medicinal use, white and moist Huashi (Talcum, 滑石) is superior. First, scrape it clean with a knife and grind it into powder. Boil it together with Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex, 牡丹皮) for one shichen (two hours), remove the Moutan Cortex, take out the Talcum, wash it with flowing water from the east, and dry it in the sun for use. Only green, black, or dark-green colored Talcum is toxic, unsuitable for medicine, and its use can be fatal.
Boguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, 补骨脂) is also known as Pogu Zhi (Broken Old Paper, 破故纸).
[Harm] This herb is drying and aids fire. It is contraindicated for conditions involving Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire, abnormal erection of the Yang organ, nocturnal emission with hematuria, scanty and painful urination, red eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, dry tongue, dry and constipated stool, internal heat with thirst, rising fire causing gastric discomfort, damp-heat leading to flaccidity syndrome, and resulting bone weakness and lack of strength. It can induce abortion. Pregnant women must avoid it.
[Benefits] Boguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, 补骨脂) is pungent and warm, entering the Kidney and Large Intestine meridians. It promotes sexual function, stops Kidney-type diarrhea, consolidates essence and Qi, and relieves lower back pain. By warming, it solidifies the Water Organ (Kidney); it is a key herb for strengthening Fire to benefit Water.
[Processing] Those from Nanfan have a reddish color, while those from Lingnan are black. Harvest in September, soak in wine overnight, and filter. Soak again in flowing water from the east for three days and nights, steam for three shichen (six hours), and dry for use. Another method involves stir-frying with salt, then drying in the sun. Other methods include soaking in child's urine or human milk, or mixing with Walnut Meat (Juglandis Semen, 胡桃肉) for use.
