Taste and nature: Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Indications: Treats the five types of hemorrhoids (Wuzhi), heart pain, red eyes, kills intestinal parasites, and treats wind-heat in the skin, wind-stroke with bloody stool (Changfeng xiexue), and dysentery with red and white discharge (Chibai li). (Attached from *Rihua Bencao*.)
Taste and nature: Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Indications: Treats washing sores, and dampness with itching under the scrotum. In August, cut large branches, wait for tender shoots to grow, boil the juice to make wine, which is very effective in treating severe wind-induced atrophy and bi-syndrome (Feng da wei bi). (Attached from *Bielu*.)
Taste and nature: Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Indications: Decocted as a soup to treat pediatric convulsions with high fever (Jingxian zhuangre), tinea (Juexuan), and carbuncles (Dingzhong). The bark and stems are used together. (Attached from *Rihua Bencao*.)
Taste and nature: Bitter, cold, non-toxic. Indications: Treats all phlegm-rheum generated by wind transformation, clears liver-wind, muscle spasms and twitching (Jinmai chouche), and acute mouth lock (Jikou jin). (Attached from *Jia Bencao*.)
Taste and nature: Pungent, warm, non-toxic. Indications: Treats severed injuries (Jueshang), tonifies the middle jiao (Bu zhong), reconnects sinews and bones (Xu jingu), fills the marrow and brain (Tian suinao), calms the five zang organs (An wuzang), addresses the five slacknesses and six urgencies (Wuhan liuji), and wind-cold-dampness bi-syndrome (Fenghan shi bi). Raw lacquer removes long worms. Long-term consumption lightens the body and prolongs longevity.
(The Lacquer tree originally originated from Zhongshan Valley in Han times; currently found in Liangzhou, Yizhou, Guangdong, Jinzhou, Shenzhou, and Luzhou. The tree is two or three zhang tall, the trunk resembles that of a persimmon, leaves resemble those of an ailanthus, flowers resemble those of a pagoda tree, fruits resemble ox apples. The wood heart is yellow. In June and July, incisions are made to collect the sap, or dry lacquer is obtained by chopping with axes. It does not require sun-drying but dries naturally, resembling honeycomb pores; those with separated pores are considered superior.)
The Lacquer tree grows in the northwest. Sap is extracted by drilling to produce lacquer. When exposed to the sun, it becomes moist again; when in damp shade, it dries easily. This is analogous to the fluids transformed from food and drink in the stomach and intestines: when conveyed to the Heart, they transform into red blood, illustrating the meaning of "becoming moist upon sun exposure." When entering the Kidney, they coagulate into essence, illustrating the meaning of "drying easily in damp shade." Dry lacquer has a pungent and warm nature. Initially white then reddish, raw and dried it turns black. Endowed with the essence of Metal of the Yangming channel, it conveys upwards to the Heart to nourish the meridians and communicates downwards with the Kidney to consolidate essence and marrow. Its indication for severed injuries nourishes the meridians. Tonifying the middle corresponds to Yangming occupying the central Earth position. Reconnecting sinews and bones implies that treating severed injuries allows sinews and bones to reconnect. Filling the marrow and brain refers to consolidating essence and marrow. The essence of water and grain from Yangming nourishes and irrigates the five zang organs, thus calming them. "Slackness" refers to laxity, and "urgency" refers to spasm/tension; both signify disharmony. Disharmony of the five zang organs leading to laxity constitutes the "five slacknesses"; disharmony of the six fu organs leading to tension constitutes the "six urgencies." The five slacknesses and six urgencies are bi-syndromes caused by wind, cold, and dampness, hence termed "wind-cold-dampness bi-syndrome." The *Suwen: Bi Lun* states: Each of the five zang organs has an external correspondence, and each of the six fu organs has its respective Shu point. Bi-syndromes of the skin, muscles, vessels, sinews, and bones, occurring at their respective seasons and repeatedly exposed to wind, cold, and dampness, will internally lodge in the five zang organs. Bi-syndromes of the five zang organs are akin to the five slacknesses. Wind-cold-dampness qi strikes their Shu points, and diet responds accordingly. Following the Shu points inward, it lodges in the respective fu organs. Bi-syndromes of the six fu organs are akin to the six urgencies. Thus, the five slacknesses and six urgencies are wind-cold-dampness bi-syndromes. Raw lacquer is white and belongs to Metal; Metal can subdue wind, therefore raw lacquer removes long worms. Long-term consumption causes the essence of Central Earth to circulate and distribute throughout, thus lightening the body and prolonging longevity.
