Saponariae Spina (Attached): Also known as Tianding, it has a pungent and warm flavor, and is non-toxic. Boil the tender spines in rice vinegar to make a paste; apply topically to sores and tinea for miraculous effects. (*Tujing Bencao*) Treats carbuncles and swellings, acute mastitis (Duru), malignant sores caused by wind-leprosy, retained placenta, and parasites. (*Bencao Gangmu*) Treats infantile double tongue (swelling of the sublingual area resembling a small tongue), stranguria with urinary retention, intestinal wind with bloody dysentery, severe leprosy with itching, unruptured carbuncles and ulcers, and headless abscesses. Stir-fry, pound off the red skin, soak in water until soft, boil thoroughly, and preserve with sugar for consumption. It can unblock the accumulation of wind-heat in the five zang organs. (*Bencao Yan yi*) The white flesh inside the seed kernel is used in formulas treating lung diseases; chewing the yellow heart inside the kernel treats phlegm in the diaphragm and acid regurgitation. (*Tujing Bencao*) The kernel harmonizes blood and moistens the intestines. (*Yongfa Faxiang*) Treats wind-heat, deficiency-type constipation of the large intestine, scrofula and toxic swellings, and sores/tinea. Soap Pod (Attached): It has a pungent and warm flavor, and is slightly toxic. Its main indications are dispelling wind-dampness, treating dysentery with bloody stools, and sores/tinea with toxic swellings. (*Bencao Gangmu* Attached) The soap pod belongs to the same species as Gleditsia sinensis but is named "soap pod" because its juice is thick and fleshy. It contains several black seeds, about the size of a finger, not perfectly round, black like lacquer, very hard, with white kernels inside resembling chestnuts, which can be eaten after roasting. In surgery, it is used to reduce toxic swellings and scrofula. *Xianggan Zhi* states: Water from soap pods can kill goldfish, repel ants, and bran will not approach it. Recently, surgeons use the flesh of the soap pod, pounded externally, to treat nameless swellings and toxins. The kernels are used to treat scrofulous abscesses, carbuncles, and hemorrhoids. Physicians from Fangshang use it as an emetic to treat mass accumulations (Zhengjia).
