Dynasty: Ming

Category: Materia Medica
[Original Text Translation]
Pungent in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Kidney meridians. Avoid exposure to fire. Incompatible with Curcuma aromatica (Yujin). Remove the calyx. Jishe Xiang (Clove Bud) is its alias.
Mu Dingxiang (Mother Clove) refers to the larger ones.
It warms the Spleen and Stomach, thereby curing vomiting and hiccups; it regulates stagnation, making it suitable for treating distension and fullness. It can stop abdominal pain and eliminate bad breath. For teeth, it treats dental caries; for smallpox, it aids in the eruption of white ash-like lesions.
The Spleen is the official responsible for granaries. If injured by raw or cold food, which remains undigested, it leads to obstruction and distension, or vomiting and hiccups. By warming the Spleen and Stomach and moving stagnant Qi, both distension and vomiting are cured.
Dingxiang (Clove) is pungent, hot, and drying. It should not be used unless the condition belongs to deficiency-cold.
Pungent in taste, hot in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung and Spleen meridians. Remove the stalk. Soak in vinegar overnight, bake until dry, scrape off the skin, and clean thoroughly like millet grains.
It warms the Spleen and eliminates regurgitation/vomiting; it stabilizes diarrhea and manages heart-stomach pain. For rhinitis (Bi Yuan) and toothache, it is used externally only.
In ancient prescriptions, its use was rare (one in a hundred), because its pungent and hot nature consumes and disperses, potentially stirring up Fire in the Spleen and Lungs; excessive use damages the eyes.
Bitter and pungent in taste, greatly warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians. Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) acts as an assistant herb.
Incompatible with Alisma orientale (Zexie), Niter (Xiaoshi), and Aragonite (Hanshuishi). Avoid beans. Those that are purple in color and pungent in taste are superior. Scrape off the rough skin, slice, and stir-fry with ginger juice.
Pungency can disperse Wind pathogens; warmth can resolve Cold qi. It directs Qi downward, resolves phlegm, removes excess fullness, and relieves bloating. It warms the Stomach, harmonizes the Middle Jiao, regulates the chest and abdomen, and stops pain. It is jointly indicated for simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, and for palpitations and restlessness.
Its warm and hot nature excels at dissipating nodules and removing fullness, warming the Stomach and nourishing the Spleen. Therefore, it is primarily used for conditions such as food retention, phlegm stagnation, distending pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, it can only be applied when the Primordial Qi (Yuan Qi) is not yet deficient and the Pathogenic Qi is just becoming abundant, or when external Cold invades the Stomach and Dampness infiltrates the Spleen. For individuals with Spleen deficiency, even if they present with the aforementioned symptoms, they must absolutely avoid consuming it. Although harm may not be immediately apparent, the pure, mild, and harmonious Qi is secretly damaged and consumed. One must be cautious. Li Dongyuan stated: "Bitterness can direct Qi downward, thus draining excess fullness; warmth can benefit Qi, thus dissipating excess fullness."
