(Vernacular name: Pogu Zhi.)
[Flavor and Nature]
Acrid, greatly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Five consumptions and seven injuries. Lower back pain in men. Frequent coldness. Blood and Qi disorders in women. Miscarriage. Enhancing sexual function. Clarifying the eyes and ears. Treating renal diarrhea. Unblocking the Gate of Life (Mingmen). Consolidating spirit and essence. Its nature belongs to Fire, consolidating and anchoring the Spirit (Shen). It allows the Fire of the Pericardium Collateral (Xinbao Luo) to communicate with the Fire of the Gate of Life (Mingmen). Thus, the Original Yang is firm, and the marrow is filled. This embodies the principle of using astringents to treat prolapse or leakage. However, it is also said that Pogu Zhi can tonify the Spleen; this is not direct Spleen tonification. Generally, when Kidney Qi is weak, Yang Qi declines and fails to warm and steam the Spleen and Stomach. When Spleen and Stomach Qi are cold, it causes stuffiness and obstruction in the chest and diaphragm, loss of appetite, and sluggish transformation and transportation. Consequently, there may be deficiency bloating in the abdomen and hypochondrium, vomiting of phlegm and saliva, or borborygmus and diarrhea. It is like food in a cauldron; without fire, it will not cook even all day long. Jisheng Ershen Wan treats deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach by using Pogu Zhi to tonify the Kidney and Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) to tonify the Spleen. Through the mutual interaction of Spleen and Kidney, tonifying the Kidney with Pogu Zhi serves as a means to tonify the Spleen.
(That is Jinyinhua/Honeysuckle Flower.)
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Stops heat-toxin bloody dysentery and watery diarrhea caused by descending Qi. All wind-dampness conditions, as well as various swellings, toxins, carbuncles, sores, scabies, and yaws. The stems, leaves, and flowers have identical functions. Ancients called it an essential medicine for treating wind-dampness distension and resolving dysentery while expelling corpse-poison, but later generations ceased to use it for these purposes. Later generations call it an essential medicine for reducing swelling, dissipating toxins, and treating sores, which was not mentioned by the ancients. The principles of ancient and modern times are indeed not identical, yet each explores its subtleties to the utmost. The underlying logic remains consistent across time.
[Flavor and Nature]
Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Five types of childhood malnutrition (Wu Gan) with white turbid urine in children. Expels parasites. Treats dysentery and diarrhea. Strengthens the Spleen and Stomach. Clears deficiency-heat. Most medicinal herbs that expel parasites are acrid and bitter. Only Quisqualis Fructus (Shijunzi) and Torreyae Semen (Feizi) are sweet and expel parasites. Commonly believed that after expelling parasites, digestion is not aided. Who knows? Trees have borers, houses have ants, states have thieves. Is this fortune or misfortune? (Avoid drinking hot tea after consumption.)
