[Ru Xiang / Frankincense]
Use after removing the oil, or use raw. Grinding it together with Juncus effusus (Jiedicao) makes it easier to grind finely.
Pungent, warm, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Invigorates blood and relieves pain, relaxes sinews and promotes flesh growth. Disperses wind and directs rebellious Qi downward, tonifies the Kidney and facilitates childbirth. Resolves carbuncles and furuncles and soothes fractures and ulcers.
Originates from various countries in Nanfan (ancient term for southern overseas nations). The tree resembles a pine. When the trunk is chopped with an axe, resin oozes out externally and condenses into incense. Some flows out naturally. Those that are round, large like a nipple, and translucent are considered superior.
For facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), burn it to produce smoke and fumigate the affected area. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For cold pain in the heart, mix with Piper nigrum (Hujaio) powder and take with ginger water. (No. 2.)
[Mo Yao / Myrrh]
Use after removing the oil.
Pungent, bitter, non-toxic. Scatters blood and reduces swelling, relieves pain and generates flesh. Treats various sores, metal wounds, and whip marks; breaks up masses, old blood, and stasis. Soothes postpartum blood stasis pain and also treats hemorrhoids and fistulas.
Originates from Persia; currently found in the South Sea and Guangzhou. The tree is large like a pine. During collection, a pit is dug under the tree, and the bark is chopped with an axe so that resin flows into the pit. After ten days, it solidifies into blocks. The size of the blocks varies; they are black and resemble Anxi Xiang (Benzoin).
For abdominal pain in women, take one qian with wine. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
If menstrual discharge resembles animals/beasts, plug the vagina with cotton, place one liang of Mo Yao powder on the tongue, and moisten with plain boiled water.
Dian She Dan (Tongue-Pointing Pill): Composed of Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, Peng Sha (Borax), Ming Xiong Huang (Realgar), Xiong Dan (Bear Bile), Zhen Xue Jie (True Dragon's Blood), Ting Li (Descurainia Seed), Zhen Chen Xiang (Agarwood), Mei Pian (Borneol) (each 1 qian); She Xiang (Musk), Zhu (Pearl) (each 2 fen).
Grind all into fine powder. Separately, dissolve 2 qian of Chan Su (Toad Venom) in human milk. Form pills the size of mung beans, coating them with gold foil. Take one pill per dose, crush it inside a scallion white, and swallow with wine to induce sweating. External application is also possible. Treats all cases of redness, swelling, heat, and toxicity; early-stage Ding Chuang (carbuncles); toothache and sore throat due to excess fire; various sores on the lips and tongue; and infantile convulsions. It is not indicated for slow convulsions or any deficiency syndromes, which are incurable by this formula. (Various Formulas No. 1.)
[Xue Jie / Dragon's Blood]
When using, do not use Hai Mu Xue (Sea Mother Blood), as it closely resembles the true drug. It merely tastes salty and has a fishy odor. Also known as Qilin Jie and Zhu Li.
Sweet, salty, non-toxic. A herb for the Foot-Shaoyin and Hand-Shaoyin meridians (Note: Text says "Hand-Foot Jueyin", typically Liver/Pericardium/Gallbladder/Kidney context, but literally "Shou Zu Jueyin"). It acts significantly on the blood. Stops bleeding and disperses stasis, generates flesh and relieves pain. Applied externally to treat all kinds of malignant sores and soothe various fractures and injuries.
Originates from Nanfan countries and Guangzhou. The tree is several zhang high, with graceful foliage, and leaves resembling cherry leaves but with three angles. Its resin flows from the wood, colored like blood. Collection time is not fixed. Sometimes the bark is chopped to allow flow. To verify authenticity: chewing it should yield a texture like wax that does not break easily (superior grade). Another method states that if it penetrates the fingernail, it is genuine. Yet another states that when burned, if red juice drips out and the ash remains unchanged in color after a long time, it is genuine.
