妇人患骨蒸烦热、盗汗口干，可将本品与麦冬末、生地黄汁一同煎熬制成丸剂服用。（验方第一。）
口疮连年不愈，上方去掉地黄加入玄参，炼蜜为丸含化。（第二。）

味苦、涩，性微温，无毒。是足厥阴肝经、足少阴肾经的药物。能益肾补肝，养血祛风。使胡须头发变黑并容光焕发，强筋壮骨并补益精髓，治疗瘰疬并消散痈肿，止崩漏带下并祛除疟疾。
产于顺州南河县，如今各地都有，以西洛、嵩山、河南柏县产者为佳。春季生苗，蔓延于竹木墙壁间，茎呈紫色。叶片相对生长，像山药叶但不光亮。夏秋开黄白花，像葛勒花。结子有棱，似荞麦但较小。根部如拳头大，有五棱瓣，像小甜瓜。有赤白两种。秋冬两季采挖根部。
全身疥疮不可治者，与艾叶煎汤熏洗。（验方第一。）
大麻风，用一斤何首乌，四两胡麻，九蒸九晒，研为细末，酒送服二钱。（第二。）
外伤破损出血，研末外敷，神效。（第三。）
瘰疬结核，无论已破未破，嚼碎含服，每日两次。（第四。）
肠风下血，用米汤送服粉末二钱。（第五。）
皮下疼痛，不论何处，研末后用姜汁调成膏状敷贴，用布包裹，再用烧热的鞋底熨烫患处。（第六。）
骨软腰膝痛，行走困难，遍身瘙痒，用酒制过的枣肉做成如豆大的丸剂，每次三十丸，酒送服。（第七。）
紫白癜风，多起于面部颈部，初起无痛痒，后逐渐微痒，蔓延成片，或游走遍身。纯紫斑者称为紫癜，粉红底上有白斑者称为白癜，均伴有出汗。初起时用万灵丹发汗解表。何首乌、荆芥、苍术、苦参、皂角刺制成丸剂服用，可治白癜。另外用附子、硫黄、姜汁调匀，用茄蒂擦拭，可治紫白二癜。又或用硫黄一钱，密陀僧一钱，信石少许，陈醋调和外敷，疗效良好。又或用密陀僧研末，醋调外敷。（第八。）
七宝美髯丹：何首乌（赤白各一斤，米泔水浸泡三日，去皮铺在黑豆上，砂锅蒸制，如此重复九次）、赤白茯苓（各半斤）、菟丝子（半斤，酒蒸）、当归身（半斤）、故脂（四两，酒浸，与黑芝麻同炒）、牛膝（半斤）。
共研为细末，炼蜜为丸，大小如龙眼核，每次二三丸，酒送服。可使须发变黑，强壮筋骨，固摄精气，延续嗣脉，延年益寿。（诸方第一。）
Remove the heart and steam before use. *Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata* (Di Huang, Prepared Rehmannia Root) and *Fritillariae Bulbus* (Bei Mu, Fritillary Bulb) are used as guiding herbs. It is incompatible with *Chrysocollae Lapis* (Zeng Qing, Chrysocolla). Carp is contraindicated. If carp is accidentally ingested, *Lemna Minor* (Fu Ping, Duckweed) can resolve the toxicity.
Sweet in taste, cold in nature, slightly bitter, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Taiyang, Hand-Shaoyin, and Foot-Shaoyin meridians. Nourishes Kidney Yin, moistens dryness, relieves thirst, and resolves phlegm. Clears deficient fire (Yin Fire) to treat bone-steaming fever, moistens the Five Zang organs, and promotes urination and defecation. Indicated for pathogenic heat causing cough with wheezing and shortness of breath, fiery heat causing polydipsia and dry throat, heat-toxin causing lung abscess or wasting-thirst syndrome, and heat stagnation causing vomiting of pus or blood. Contraindicated in those without internal heat and those with chronic thirst. Kills three types of parasites, removes latent corpse-guan (consumptive disease), strengthens bone marrow, and nourishes the skin.
Grows in high mountains and valleys of Fenggao. Roots are harvested in spring and autumn. Now distributed everywhere. Vines sprout in spring, thick as a hairpin shaft, over one zhang tall. Leaves resemble fennel, extremely sharp, fine, sparse, and smooth, with reverse thorns; some are rough without thorns. Delicate white flowers bloom in summer, also yellow or purple ones. Roots resemble *Stemonae Radix* (Bai Bu, Stemona Root).
For women suffering from bone-steaming fever, irritability, night sweats, and dry mouth, mix this herb with powder of *Ophiopogonis Radix* (Mai Dong, Ophiopogon Root) and juice of *Rehmanniae Radix* (Sheng Di Huang, Raw Rehmannia Root), decoct into pills, and take orally. (Verified Formula 1.)
For chronic oral ulcers lasting years, remove *Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata* from the above formula, add *Scrophulariae Radix* (Xuan Shen, Scrophularia Root), make honey pills, and hold in the mouth to dissolve. (Formula 2.)
For various carbuncles and swellings, take the juice and swallow with wine. (Formula 3.)
Soak in wine and bake before use.
Sweet and bitter in taste, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. Warms the Lung and kills parasites. Treats cough with rebellious Qi, cures transmissive bone-steaming (tuberculosis-like consumption), easily resolves gan disease (malnutrition/parasitic disease in children), and effectively treats scabies and tinea.
Found in mountains and fields everywhere. Sprouts in spring, forming vines. Leaves are large, sharp, and long, resembling bamboo leaves, green on the surface and glossy. A cluster of fifteen or sixteen roots grows beneath, yellowish-white. Harvested in spring and autumn.
For sudden cough, soak in wine and drink, three times daily. (Verified Formula 1.)
For thirty-year chronic cough, decoct with honey and take. (Formula 2.)
To fumigate clothes to remove lice, mix with powder of *Gastrodiae Rhizoma* (Qin Jiao, Gentiana Macrophylla Root), place in a bamboo tube, burn, and fumigate. (Formula 3.)
Soak in rice wash water, mix, and steam with black soybeans. Avoid iron vessels. *Poria* (Fu Ling, Poria Cocos) is used as a guiding herb. Contraindicated with all blood products, scaleless fish, garlic, scallions, and radish (*Raphani Semen*, Lu Bo Zi).
Bitter and astringent in taste, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. A herb for the Foot-Jueyin Liver and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney meridians. Benefits the Kidney and tonifies the Liver, nourishes blood, and expels wind. Darkens beard and hair, improves complexion, strengthens sinews and bones, benefits essence and marrow, treats scrofula, dissipates swellings, stops metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, and eliminates malaria.
Native to Nanhe County, Shunzhou, now found everywhere; those from Xiluo, Songshan, and Boxian, Henan are superior. Sprouts in spring, creeping among bamboo, trees, and walls, stems are purple. Leaves grow opposite each other, resembling *Dioscoreae Rhizoma* (Shan Yao, Yam) but not glossy. Yellow-white flowers bloom in summer and autumn, resembling *Polygoni Multiflori Caulis* (Ge Le Teng). Seeds have ridges, smaller than buckwheat. Roots are fist-sized, with five ridges, resembling small sweet melons. There are red and white varieties. Harvested in autumn and winter.
For incurable generalized scabies, decoct with *Artemisiae Argyi Folium* (Ai Ye, Mugwort Leaf) and fumigate/wash. (Verified Formula 1.)
For leprosy (Da Ma Feng), use one jin of this herb and four liang of *Sesami Fructus* (Hu Ma, Sesame Seed), steam nine times and sun-dry nine times, grind to powder, and take two qian with wine. (Formula 2.)
For traumatic injury with bleeding, grind to powder and apply externally; miraculous effect. (Formula 3.)
For scrofula and tubercles, whether ruptured or not, chew and swallow twice daily. (Formula 4.)
For intestinal wind with bloody stool, take two qian of powder with rice water. (Formula 5.)
For pain under the skin, regardless of location, grind to powder, mix with ginger juice to form a paste, apply, wrap with cloth, and press with a hot shoe sole. (Formula 6.)
For soft bones, waist and knee pain, inability to walk, and generalized itching, process with wine, mix with jujube meat to make bean-sized pills, take thirty pills with wine each time. (Formula 7.)
Purple and white vitiligo often starts on the face and neck, initially painless and itchless, later becoming slightly itchy, spreading in patches or migrating across the body. Pure purple spots are called "purple petechiae"; pink spots with white patches are called "white vitiligo," both accompanied by sweating. At onset, induce sweating with *Wan Ling Dan*. For white vitiligo, take pills made of *Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata* (Shou Wu, Prepared Fleeceflower Root), *Schizonepetae Spica* (Jing Jie, Schizonepeta Spike), *Atractylodis Rhizoma* (Cang Zhu, Atractylodes Rhizome), *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix* (Ku Shen, Sophora Root), and *Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina* (Zao Ci, Gleditsia Thorn). Additionally, mix *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata* (Fu Zi, Prepared Aconite Lateral Root), *Sulfur* (Liu Huang), and ginger juice, apply with eggplant stalks to treat purple and white vitiligo. Also, mix one qian of Sulfur, one qian of *Plumbi Oxidum Rubrum* (Mi Tuo Seng, Litharge), and a small amount of *Arsenolite* (Xin Shi) with aged vinegar for external application; effective. Alternatively, grind *Plumbi Oxidum Rubrum* to powder and apply with vinegar. (Formula 8.)
*Qi Bao Mei Ran Dan* (Seven Treasures Beard Beautifying Pill): *Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata* (Shou Wu, Prepared Fleeceflower Root - one jin each of red and white varieties, soaked in rice water for three days, skin removed, placed on black soybeans, steamed in a clay pot, repeated nine times), *Poria* (Fu Ling, Poria Cocos - half jin each of red and white varieties), *Cuscutae Semen* (Tu Si Zi, Dodder Seed - half jin, steamed in wine), *Angelicae Sinensis Radix* (Dang Gui, Dang Gui Body - half jin), *Epimedii Folium* (Gu Zhi, Epimedium Leaf - four liang, soaked in wine, stir-fried with black sesame seeds), *Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix* (Niu Xi, Achyranthes Root - half jin).
Grind all to powder, make pills with honey the size of longan seeds, take two or three pills with wine each time. Blackens beard and hair, strengthens sinews and bones, consolidates essence and qi, aids fertility, and prolongs life. (First of All Formulas.)
