With Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos) as the guiding herb, Badi Dou (Crotonis Fructus) is incompatible with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Lusun (Asparagi Racemus), Lilü (Veratri Radix), and cold water; it counteracts Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen). There are variations in using the kernel, the shell, or the oil, as well as differences in processing methods such as stir-frying with bran, boiling in vinegar, or burning to ash. When wrapped in cloth and pressed to remove the oil, it is called Bashuang (Crotonis Fructus Oleum Expressum Residuum). Fresh ones are of superior quality. When used, the skin and core must be removed.
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, and toxic. It breaks up zheng zha (abdominal masses) and accumulations, resolves phlegm-plethora and retained fluids, eliminates ghost toxins and gu poison, and calms malignant sores and polyps; it dissipates ten types of edema/qi-water conditions and unblocks all stagnations. It sweeps through the five zang organs, clears the six fu organs, opens the orifices and passages, and eliminates cold and raw food accumulations. It treats dysentery, diarrhea, convulsions, and epilepsy; relieves throat obstruction (hou bi) and toothache. It promotes menstruation and induces abortion, breaks blood stasis and expels pus, dispels wind and guides qi, reduces swelling, and kills parasites. It resolves warm malaria characterized by alternating chills and fever, and stops acute pain in the heart and abdomen. It acts as a general who breaches gates and passes barriers, possessing the ability to strengthen the spleen and open the stomach.
It grows in the valleys of Ba Commandery. The fruits are harvested in August. It is also found in Jia Prefecture, Mei Prefecture, and Rong Prefecture. The tree is one to two zhang high; the leaves resemble those of the cherry tree but are thicker and larger; the flowers, when blooming, resemble the shells of large maple seeds and are brittle and thin; the seeds and kernels resemble pine nuts.
For treating all types of stagnation: Use 1 liang of Badi Dou, 2 liang of Ge Fen (Concha Meretricis), and 2 liang of Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex). Make pills the size of mung beans. Take 5 pills washed down with water. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For treating food malaria and accumulation malaria: Use 2 qian of Badi Dou (core removed) and 2 qian of Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus). Make pills the size of beans. Take 1 pill washed down with cold water. (Formula No. 2.)
For treating stagnation-induced dysentery and diarrhea, abdominal pain with tenesmus: Use 49 grains each of Badi Dou and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum). Remove skins and cores, burn to ash, melt wax, and make pills roughly the size of mung beans. Take 3 qian each time, washed down with Dahuang decoction. (Formula No. 3.)
For treating persistent lower bleeding: Make a hole in an egg, insert one grain of Badi Dou, bake until cooked, remove the bean, and consume the egg in portions. (Formula No. 4.)
For persistent watery diarrhea in summer: Use one grain of Badi Dou, grind into powder using a needle-head amount, mix with melted wax to form one pill, and take with inverted-flowing water. (Formula No. 5.)
For pediatric phlegm-wheezing: Use one grain of Badi Dou, pound into a paste, wrap in cotton, and insert into the nostril (left for males, right for females); phlegm will drain out. (Formula No. 6.)
To remove black nevi: Mix equal parts of Badi Dou, Duanshi (Lapis Aluminis Ustus), and Renyan (Arsenici Trioxidum), add a small amount of Nuomi (Oryzae Sativum Glutinosa Semen), stir-fry, grind, and apply locally. (Formula No. 7.)
For carbuncles, ulcers, and foul flesh: Stir-fry until charred, grind into a paste, and apply locally. (Formula No. 8.)
