It grows at the foot of large mountains and pine trees, harvested in the second and eighth lunar months, and can be found wherever there are large pine trees. The Poria from Mount Tai has a finer texture and is no longer used. The Poria from Mount Hua is extremely coarse and large. It is also produced in the southern mountains of Yongzhou, but inferior to that from Mount Hua. It grows attached to the roots of large pine trees, without stems, leaves, flowers, or fruits, forming lumpy masses with black, wrinkled skin and firm, white interior, located underground. Large specimens weigh several jin. There are two types: red Poria and white Poria. Some say it transforms from pine resin; others say it arises by borrowing the Qi of the pine. Another view states that Poria forms independently in lumps and does not attach to roots, whereas Shenma (Poria with Pine Root) forms in smaller lumps enveloping the root. This latter explanation is considered more plausible, suggesting it arises by borrowing pine Qi; those that have existed for a thousand years possess spiritual efficacy. In modern times, the Poria used mostly comes from Yunnan. It is also said that where Poria exists underground, spiritual energy manifests above ground in thread-like shapes, which mountain dwellers sometimes see; this is not the thread-like vine of Cuscutae Semen (Dodder Seed).
