Remove the head. Soak in rice washing water, then dry in the sun. This is also known as Shan Cong (Mountain Scallion).
Pungent, bitter, slightly cold, toxic. It induces vomiting of phlegm and saliva caused by wind-phlegm epilepsy, and treats ding sores (carbuncles), scabies, tinea, and malignant ulcers.
It grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and is harvested in the second and eighth lunar months. Now it is found in valleys everywhere. The seedlings and leaves resemble Plantago asiatica (Cheqiancao, 车前草), the stem resembles the white part of Allium fistulosum (Congbai, 葱白), wrapped in black skin resembling palm fiber.
It bears fleshy red flowers. There are two varieties: one is Shui Liliu (Water Veratrum), with stems and leaves largely similar, but growing near water, having over a hundred rootlets, and not used for medicinal purposes. The variety currently used is Congbai Liliu (Scallion-root Veratrum), which has very few rootlets.
For stroke with loss of consciousness and clenched jaw, take 5 fen of powdered herb each time. Use vomiting of phlegm as the limit; if no vomiting occurs, administer again. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For various wind diseases with phlegm. Same method as above. (No. 2.)
For chronic malaria with excessive phlegm. Same method as above. (No. 3.)
For lice on the head, apply powder topically. (No. 4.)
For fanhua malignant ulcers (refractory ulcers), mix powder with pig fat and apply externally. (No. 5.)
For accidental ingestion of leeches, take powder with water to induce vomiting and expulsion. (No. 6.)
Raw Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) should have its skin and umbilicus removed before use. Cooked Fuzi should be soaked in water until soft, completely removing skin and umbilicus, then sliced while hot and stir-fried. Di Dan Cao (Buddlejae Flos or related species, here referring to a guiding herb) acts as a guide; it is incompatible with Wugong (Centipede), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Doukou (Black Soybean), Gancao (Licorice Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Ludou (Mung Bean). Raw form disperses pathogens; cooked form provides vigorous tonification. Slices are glossy, black, moist, and soft. Some modern Fuzi slices are dark black, dry, and scorched, completely losing the characteristic aroma and flavor of Fuzi; users must exercise caution.
Pungent, sweet, very hot, non-toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Circulates through the Twelve Primary Meridians. Warms the Kidneys, dries dampness in the Spleen, eliminates damp-cold. Relieves cold extremities (Jue-ni, 厥逆), relaxes spasms of the ankles and knees, rescues nearly exhausted Yuan Yang (Primordial Yang), and descends counterflow turbid Yin. Breaks up masses and accumulations (Zhengjia, 症瘕), treats cold hernia, cures epilepsy and numbness, and stops slow convulsions. Treats disorders such as vomiting, hiccuping, and dysphagia; conditions of deep-seated cold and stubborn chill; crises of diarrhea with undigested food; symptoms of cholera with muscle cramps. It unblocks meridians but can cause abortion; it contracts sores but can obstruct hearing.
