For internal use, stir-fry before application; for external bathing, use raw material to decoct for washing. It is incompatible with Peony Root (Mudanpi), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu), and Croton Seed (Badou), and is inhibited by Sulphur (Liuhuang).
Bitter in taste, neutral in nature, slightly warm, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen, Liver, and Kidney meridians. It warms and tonifies the Mingmen (Gate of Life, root of Kidney Yang) and warms and nourishes the uterus. It restores flaccidity and weakness of the penis in men, and simultaneously treats dampness-induced itching. It eliminates coldness in the vagina of women and treats swelling and pain. It addresses soreness and pain in the lower back and knees, stubborn bi-syndrome (painful obstruction) in limbs and joints, traumatic blood stasis from falls and injuries, and leukorrhea (red and white vaginal discharge). It washes away toxins from scabies, tinea, crusts, and leprosy-like sores, and fumigates hemorrhoidal fistulas and stubborn malignant ulcers. For generalized pruritus (whole-body itching), no other herb is as effective for bathing as this one; for urinary enuresis or incontinence, its use yields immediate results. It greatly benefits male sexual function and is particularly effective in treating epilepsy in children. It is most suitable for gargling to treat toothache and can also astringe sweat in the genital area.
It grows in valleys and fields of Linzi River. The fruits are harvested in May. It is abundant near fields and rural villages. Sprouts appear in March, growing two to three chi high, with green, finely divided leaves, growing in clumps resembling Artemisia branches. Each branch bears over a hundred flower heads that fruit together in one cluster. Its floral and fruit morphology is similar to that of Angelica Sinensis (Danggui), Ligusticum Chuanxiong (Xiong), Water Dropwort (Shuiqin), Ligusticum Wallichii (Gaoben), Dill (Shiluo), and Carrot (Huluobo). It is found everywhere, but those from Yangzhou and Xiangzhou are considered superior.
