The prescription is found in entry 349 of *Wenge* (Clam Shell).
For conditions such as corneal nebula obscuring the pupil, strabismus with a small or irregular pupil, sunken or deviated pupils, immobility of the pupil, glaucoma (Qingguang Neizhang), red filaments winding around the black and white parts of the eye, wind-itch at the inner and outer canthi, trichiasis (Quanmao Daojie), red eyes with ulcerated eyelid margins (Chiyan Lianxian), photophobia (Xiuming Paguang), protruding eyes resembling a conch shell spiral, crab-eye appearance, pterygium (Rou Panjing), and ophthalmic disorders caused by head wind, blowing medication is appropriate. For those suitable for blowing medication, cover the head completely with a large cloth to prevent wind penetration, insert the medicine tube into the eye, blow shallowly first and then deeply, stop when the medicine cools down, allowing the generated water droplets to flush the eye. Use a thin quilt for warmth in autumn and winter.
Blowing medication is contraindicated after contracting cold damage (Shanghan), postpartum, after variola (smallpox/variolae), after consumptive disease (Laobing), after chronic cough, and for those suffering from lumbar and leg pain due to seminal emission accompanied by eye diseases. After middle age, one should not lightly use blowing medication; if unavoidable, use it sparingly a few times. If the nebula becomes mobile, there will be some improvement. These are the forty-nine exogenous eye disorders where blowing medication is not suitable.
When the pupil is dilated, yellowish turbidity surrounds the eye, vision is dim and blurred, diplopia (seeing one object as two) occurs, the black part of the pupil is short-sighted and small, or the pupil is scorched and shrunken due to liver injury from anger causing essence to scatter rather than gather, these are the twenty-three endogenous eye disorders where blowing medication is not suitable.
If dizziness, heavy eyelids unable to open, and low spirit occur midway through blowing medication, the following prescription is suitable:
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 8 fen) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 5 fen) Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 3 fen) Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 fen) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 8 fen) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 fen) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 4 fen) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 4 fen) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 4 fen) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 6 fen) Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices) Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 2 pieces) Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 2 fen) Jingzi (Schizonepetae Spica, 2 fen).
If the nebula has completely receded, remove Xixin and Jingzi, and take the decoction in the evening. In the morning, take Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 2 qian), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Yurou (Corni Fructus, 1 qian), Chuanxi (Cyathulae Radix), and Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, 1 qian).
