Produced in Dengzhou and Laizhou, it is the egg within the abdomen of the cuttlefish. *Yao Xing Kao* (Pharmacological Properties Examination) considers it to be the sperm of the male fish. Salty in flavor, it benefits the stomach and promotes urination.
*Wuxun Zappei* records: The gallbladder of the black carp comes from [Place Name] Island in Teng County. The island is located in the middle of the river, approximately five or six *li* long, with many residents living on it. There is much green moss on stones in the water; this fish feeds on it, making its gallbladder extremely cold, suitable for medicinal use, whereas those from other places are unsuitable. Large fish can weigh over one hundred *jin*. When fishermen catch them by net, they must report to the authorities, extract the gallbladder, and then sell it in the market.
*Shi* records: *Rhopilema esculentum* (Jellyfish, Hai Zhe) lives in the South Sea. In April and May, it initially grows like a ribbon; by June, it gradually enlarges to the size of a plate. Its shape resembles white-green fluff, but it lacks ears, eyes, mouth, nose, scales, and bones. A broken reddish segment is called the "head" (Tou). Its flesh is like crystal; when pickled with alum, people in the Wu region call it "water medusa" (Shui Mu). If kept fresh for too long, it becomes thin as paper, commonly known as "white skin paper" (Bai Pi Zhi). Note: What is currently referred to as "white skin paper" is actually the outer skin of *Rhopilema esculentum*, not aged jellyfish, and is also known as Autumn Wind Seed (Qiu Feng Zi). Zhu Paishan's *Ganyuan Xiaoshi* records: On the sea, there is a white skin that is pure white, crisp, and delicious, surpassing *Rhopilema esculentum*, called "White Skin Child" (Bai Pi Zi); *Ben Cao Gang Mu* records that *Rhopilema esculentum* is named Shui Mu. People pickle it with lime and alum water to remove blood water, turning it white. The thickest part is called the "head," which tastes even better, but the use of its outer skin is not recorded. Furthermore, it states that its nature is warm and can treat abdominal ailments caused by freshwater fish. However, *Nongtian Yuhua* says: Shui Mu is originally a substance condensed from the yin sea; eating it feels warming, but its precise nature is unknown, and Li Shizhen (Dongbi) did not clarify it. Zhao Xuemin resided in Dong'ou (Wenzhou) for several years and saw locals making a living selling *Rhopilema esculentum*. Upon inquiry, they stated that this object is indeed formed by seawater condensation. The seas in the southeast are all salty. During spring and summer, when rain falls into the sea, a single drop of rain entering the sea causes a small bubble to condense on the surface. Initially, it is bean-sized, drifting with waves, baking under the sun, and gradually growing into a shape like a bamboo hat, with a head above and feet below, moving in chunks with the tide. Those who harvest *Rhopilema esculentum* often insert bamboo to form small enclosures on the coast and surround them with straw nets. As the tide rises, the jellyfish come with the tide, enter the bamboo enclosure, get caught in the net, and cannot escape, after which they are collected. Using a knife, the middle section is split open with a crack, revealing substances resembling intestinal waste falling down, named "Zhe Hua." It is also delicious to eat. It is then pickled with alum ash and sold. Note: *Rhopilema esculentum* belongs to Yin Water, while heavenly rainwater belongs to Yang. Their interaction generates this organism. Receiving the true qi of the Sun, it grows daily and possesses a warm nature.
Salty and astringent in flavor, warm in nature, it resolves phlegm, moves stagnation, stops leukorrhea, and dispels wind.
*Jiusheng Kuhai* records: Cut Bai Pi Zi according to the size of the sore, apply as a plaster, and mix inside with Realgar (Yin Zhu).
Nameless swelling and toxic sores: Use one piece of Bai Pi Zi, rub it soft with refined sugar frost, make a hole in the center, and paste it. Severe cases will suppurate and break; mild cases will dissipate. It also relieves pain.
Flowing fire (Erysipelas): Apply thin pieces of *Rhopilema esculentum* skin. Replace when dry.
Head wind (Migraine/Headache): Paste on both Taiyang acupoints to draw out wind-dampness.
Wind-dampness of the knee patella: Paste Bai Pi Zi on it.
Eliminating痞 (Masses/Bloating): Wang Shengyu said there are two prescriptions: One uses Bai Pi Zi soaked in liquor with water chestnut (*Eleocharis tuberosa*) for oral consumption; the other boils Bai Pi Zi and water chestnut together, consuming only the water chestnut, causing the mass to disappear naturally. Cheng Ken'an said: For any accumulation stagnation in children, boil water chestnut with *Rhopilema esculentum*, remove the jellyfish, and eat only the chestnut, so that various accumulations will naturally dissipate. This is because accumulation stagnation forms due to cold; *Rhopilema esculentum* can warm the Water Organ (Kidney), and water chestnut can soften hardness. Used together, their effect is swift. *Tongshou Lu* records its prescription for treating masses: Use 100 large water chestnuts, 20 ancient coins, 1 *jin* of *Rhopilema esculentum*, 4 *liang* of mirabilite (Pi Xiao), and 3 *jin* of liquor. Soak them together. After seven days, take 4 *qian* every morning, increasing up to 10 *qian* until cured.
