It is a miraculous medicine for treating Ge Ye (obstruction of the diaphragm and difficulty in swallowing). In Li Shizhen's *Bencao Gangmu* under the entry for Cat, although the placenta is mentioned, it only cites Yang Shi's empirical formula to treat Fan Wei Tu Shi (regurgitation and vomiting), where it is burned to ash and taken with Cinnabar. Other aspects are not covered at all. Moreover, there are specific methods for obtaining it and taboos for consuming it, primarily serving as a tonic.
*Tong Shou Lu* records: Use the placenta of a newborn cat, dry it on a new tile over heat, grind it into fine powder, take one or two fen each time, and swallow with good wine; after taking the medicine, lie down with a bamboo pen tube in the mouth to prevent teeth grinding and coughing. If rice cannot be swallowed, five or six doses will cure it. Method for obtaining cat placenta: When a cat is about to give birth, clamp it with a wooden stock to prevent it from eating the placenta immediately after birth; avoid drinking distilled liquor during this period.
*Feng Lian Tang Jing Yan Fang* records: Take three cat placentas, wash them with good wine, boil four liang of pork meat until lightly cooked, and consume them together; those who have suffered for years will see immediate effect. Mo Jihua said: For Wei Wan Tong (epigastric pain), without taking cat placenta, the root cause cannot be eliminated.
Jin Yucheng said: For cat placenta, if a woman suffering from Xiao Chan Fu (habitual miscarriage) consumes it as soup or powder after delivery, she will subsequently not experience miscarriage; this is extremely effective.
Zhu Shi Xiao Fang: To treat [text missing], use one cat fetus, wrap it in mud and roast until carbonized but retaining efficacy, mix with vegetable oil, and apply externally.
*Bu Yao Liang Fang*: For Ji Jing Feng (acute convulsive disorder), cut open the cat's tail, drip blood, and take with boiling water.
Wang Lianshi said: This refers to cat feces found on tiles for many years, which are white in color, used after being fired. It treats Yan Xiao (salt asthma), pain caused by Hui Jue (ascariasis-induced cold extremities), and can also regulate Wen Yi (plague/epidemic diseases) and Shu Chuang (scrofula), showing immediate results.
Huang Yunsheng said: Recently, black donkey-hide gelatin made by people in Zhejiang follows the same method as making Ejiao. It is boiled using water from Baozhuang in Linping. It is black with a greenish tint and has pig bristle patterns on top, indistinguishable from that produced in Dong'e. It is quite effective in medicinal use. Since genuine Ejiao is hard to obtain, using Zhejiang gelatin is superior to using mixed inferior gelatins. Baozhuang is located on the west bank of Linping Lake, featuring the Baozhuang Spring, locally known as "Dali Water" (Great Strength Water), believed to increase physical strength when consumed. It is said that Hu Pao Spring water, when filled to the brim in a large jar, can hold 160 copper coins without overflowing; other waters overflow after holding only 80 coins. Thus, Hu Pao Spring water is believed to benefit Qi and strength. Baozhuang water can hold 200 copper coins without overflowing, indicating its even greater potency. Gelatin made with this water can naturally rival that made with the underground waters of Ji River. However, whenever I seek this gelatin in the market and inquire among herbal merchants, they all say few produce it, making it difficult to obtain. Huang Yunsheng's description is very detailed; I record it here for future verification.
It has the effects of nourishing blood and moistening dryness, similar to Ejiao. It treats Nei Shang Yao Tong (lower back pain due to internal injury), strengthens tendons and bones, replenishes essence, consolidates the Kidney, and possesses unique special capabilities.
