Chong Yu records: Haizhu (Sea Pearl, a type of marine algae/fungus) is produced in the Lingnan region. It resembles a slug (Kuo Yu), is as large as an arm, and after ingesting marine vegetables, it spins silk in the shallow waters near the coast; this silk is called Haifen (Sea Powder). When fresh, its color is either red or green, depending on the color of the marine vegetables consumed; if dried improperly, it turns yellow. Those with five colors can treat phlegm disorders. Some say: This item is named Haizhu; its mother body resembles a cuttlefish, three to four cun long. Coastal people raise them at home in winter and plant them in spring. Binhu (Li Shizhen) states: Bamboo branches are inserted throughout fields; the mother body climbs these branches to excrete silk, which is Haifen. It must be spread out while wet so that it does not clump together. It is excellent for garnishing soups and stews, treating bloody dysentery and wind-phlegm conditions.
Cihang Huoren Shu records: To treat Gan Ji Huai Yan (Gan accumulation causing eye damage), stir-fry Gujing Cao (Vale's Eyebright Herb) and Xiao Qing Cao (Little Green Herb); process Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) by water levigation; use Haifen, Ciji Li (Tribulus Fruit), and Shijunzi Rou (Quisqualis Seed Kernel), each one liang. Grind into powder. In the morning, mix three qian of the powder with seven slices of sheep liver, steam, and eat.

Fan Damah (Indian Torch/Resin) is approximately one chi long, containing oil paste inside and wrapped in palm fiber outside. It can replace torches and also be used to whip horses. It arrives via foreign merchant ships from Hala Ba. Fangyu Shenglan records: Zuodama (another name for Fan Damah) is formed from resin concretion. It emits light when lit at night and prevents water leakage when applied to boats. Huayi Kao states: Zuodama is resin flowing into soil mixed with gum sap. When dug up, it resembles pine rosin or asphalt. The clear, high-quality parts resemble golden amber. It originates from Malacca.
Fan Damah has specific insecticidal properties, is not for internal use, is toxic, and is used in external surgical ointments for sores and ulcers.
To treat Yin Xuan (Yin ringworm/genital tinea): Jisheng Kuhai records: Mix equal parts of Fan Damah, lead, mercury, Xionghuang (Realgar), and Zhangnao (Camphor). Apply with pig fat; effective.
To treat Lai Jie (Leprosy-like sores) and Nong Chuang (Pustular sores): Jishantang Liangfang records: Use it in Mahuang Gao (Ephedra Ointment).
To treat Jie Chuang (Scabies): Jisheng Kuhai records: Use Fan Damah three qian, Fengzi Rou (Aleurites Moluccana Kernel) five qian, Shuiyin (Mercury), Xingren (Apricot Seed), and Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit) each one qian, Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), Zhangnao, and Xionghuang each two qian. Grind uniformly with Hongzhu Gaiyou (Red Candle Cover Oil) and apply externally; miraculous effect.
Yingxian Liangfang records: Use Quanxie (Whole Scorpion), Ruxiang (Frankincense), Kufan (Alum), Dafengzi (Aleurites Seed), Shechuangzi, Tushubie (Rhizoma Cyperi), Chuanjiao, Xionghuang, Shuiyin, Fan Damah (referred to as Fanda Mu here), Qingfen (Calomel), and Zhangnao. Grind into powder, form pills with candle oil, and apply externally for immediate effect. This formula is used for applying to various sores and Yangmei Fengdu (Syphilis toxin), with proven efficacy.
Jishi Liangfang records: Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, peeled) one qian, Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, de-stalked) one qian, Chuan Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) half a qian. These three ingredients are ground separately. Xionghuang, Danfan (Chalcanthite), Tongqing (Malachite), Ercha (Myrobalan), Qingdai, Qingfen, and Kufan each two fen; Bingpian (Borneol) one and a half fen, also ground separately. Add seven Dafengzi (Aleurites Seeds), shelled and oil removed. Renyan (Arsenic Trioxide): seven li for robust adults, five li for weak persons. Fan Damah (the torch material from foreign ships) is ground separately into powder. For cases with severe toxin but robust constitution capable of eating: use five fen per dose. For severe toxin but weak constitution: use three fen per dose. For average constitution: use four fen per dose. Mix uniformly with the previously prepared powders. Mercury: one qian per dose for robust adults, five qian for medium constitutions, three qian for extremely weak persons. Do not exceed these amounts. The medicine must be ground extremely fine; otherwise, coarse particles may injure the skin and flesh. First, place one part mercury and one part of the previous powder mixture into a cup. Add a small amount of true Sesame Oil. Grind with fingers until the oil spreads, gradually adding more oil until no mercury beads are visible, achieving a consistency similar to thin paste. Apply around the posterior tibial arteries behind both hands and the plantar arteries behind both feet. Each "fen" of medicine covers three days. Apply once in the morning and once in the evening each day. Each application session consists of rubbing 700-800 times. Generally, stop when heat penetrates deeply. During application, cover any broken skin areas with unscented plasters, changing daily. Avoid wind exposure; stay within curtains/tents. In winter, use warm beds and thick quilts. Even in warm seasons (spring, summer, autumn), avoid wind. By the seventh day of application, foul saliva will inevitably be expelled from the mouth. If gums/mouth are ulcerated and bleeding, rinse with decoction of honeycomb (Huangfengwo), cooled. Do not swallow. For mild cases, rinse with Sichuan pepper water. Skin at the application site often breaks; do not reduce rubbing due to pain. Avoid fishy smells, raw/cold foods, wind-aggravating foods, vinegar, tea, and soy sauce for one month. Especially avoid sexual intercourse. Beef, liquor, and soft-shell turtle should be avoided for 2-3 years. Buckwheat noodles and mutton should be avoided for life. After each application, wrap the treated area with a foot-long piece of blue cloth. This is the method for treating Yangmei Fengdu. For early-stage Yangmei Chuang (Chancre), rub for 5-6 days for recovery. Medicines are the same, but only use 4-5 qian of mercury; plaster application is unnecessary. For chronic sores, if the application site is ulcerated, apply to palms and soles. Use dosage for medium cases. Wrap with cloth and apply plaster as before. For Chancre (Xia Gang) and severe bone erosion (Zhu Gan), treat with medium dosage application and plaster. For oral/pharyngeal tinea ulcers preventing food intake, apply medium dosage as before. For generalized Neurodermatitis (Niu Pi Feng Xuan) with itching, pain, and weeping, apply medium dosage as before. While applying topically, internal decoction must also be taken concurrently.
Internal Decoction Formula: Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike), Yinhua (Honeysuckle Flower), Fangji (Stephania Root), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Yiren (Coix Seed), Baixianpi (Dictamnus Bark), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), Huanglian, Huangbai, Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Mutong (Akebia Stem), Chenpi (Citrus Peel), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Fencǎo (Licorice Root), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) in equal parts. Add Tufuling (Smilax Glabra Rhizome): four liang dry or eight liang fresh. Decoct in six bowls of water until three bowls remain. Divide into three doses, taken morning, noon, and evening. Start taking on the day topical application begins, continue until the seventh day when foul saliva appears. For deficient persons, add Renshen (Ginseng Root) two to three qian.
Zhili Xiaoguan Yaoxian (Hemorrhoid Fistula Tract-Eliminating Medicine Thread): Miaoling Fang records: Test depth with rush pith first. Insert to the point of maximum pain. Insert the medicine thread according to the pattern. Re-test after three days. Internal roots gradually regenerate flesh; the thread shortens. Continue using until the tract is filled. Yuzanhua Gen (Daylily Root, white is best) baked dry four liang, Fan Damah baked dry three liang, Madouling (Aristolochia Fruit) stir-fried dry two liang, Cishi (Magnetite) three qian, quenched three times in Hongcu (Red Vinegar). Grind all into extremely fine powder. Make threads using flour dough, varying thickness. Use for fistulas. Remove only when the tract opens, then re-insert.
Guang Chuang (Broad Sores/Syphilis): Xianyi Shizhu records: Use Danfan (Chalcanthite) three qian, Zaofan (Green Vitriol), Shi Huang (Orpiment), Qingdai each two qian, Fan Damah two qian, Zhusha (Cinnabar) half a qian. Grind into powder. Pound with a piece of pig fat. Wrap in summer cloth and rub onto palms and soles. Stop when abdominal borborygmus occurs; the disease heals spontaneously.
Nong Ke Chuang (Pustular Impetigo): Cihang Huoren Shu records: Banmao (Mylabris Beetle) three, Mahuang (Ephedra Herb) two qian, Fan Damah three qian, Zhangbing (Camphor/Borneol mix) five qian, La Zhuyou (Beeswax/Pig Fat mix) two liang. Melt the fat first. Add Banmao and fry until scorched; remove. Add Mahuang and fry until scorched; remove. Add Fan Damah powder, mix with Zhangbing. Break the pustule head and apply the medicine. Crusting forms immediately; healing occurs the next day.
