Traveler's Tales: The "Duidui" insect resembles a bedbug (Cimicidae) and is born in fixed pairs; it is found in Myanmar. Local women who are not favored by their husbands keep them in their pillows, believing that marital affection will naturally harmonize, so they do not spare gold and pearls to exchange for them. Zhan Jingfeng's *Xiao Bian*: My fellow Jinshi and Censor Su Minjie, upon returning from his inspection tour of Yunnan, told me: "In Yunnan, there is a small insect called 'Duidui', shaped like a louse, which always appears with its mate; if one happens to obtain it and sells it to wealthy families, the price can reach four or five taels of silver. Wealthy families store it in silver boxes and place it inside pillows, believing this ensures marital harmony without discord. This is an object possessing righteous qi."
Duidui can be used as an aphrodisiac to treat marital discord.
*Zhifang Kao*: Fengge (Wind Toad) is produced in Shaowu Prefecture, Fujian, resembling a toad. In several villages at the foot of Mount Emei, when the southeast wind blows in early spring, these creatures cover beds and kitchens. Their nature is warm, and they treat wind pathogens as well as spasms and fractures of the hands and feet.
Xie Tianshi said: Various insects are mostly used in medicine, but only the housefly (Fan Cangying) has no medicinal value, hence its therapeutic indications are not recorded in Materia Medica. I pondered deeply for ten years but could not find its therapeutic use. In the Gengshen year of the Jiaqing reign, I accidentally met Mr. Chai Yousheng at Dongjiang. He said: "Previously, while in Taizhou, I suffered from a facial carbuncle (Mian Ding). At the onset, it was numb and itchiness penetrated nearly to the bone, unbearable. Lacking medicine hastily in the mountains, someone taught me to crush seven houseflies with one or two fen of borneol (Bingpian), grind them into a paste, and apply it. The toxic heat did not spread (Zouhuang). Following this advice, the itching stopped immediately, improvement began the next day, and full recovery occurred within ten days."
It binds the root of carbuncles, preventing the spread of toxic heat; applied to scarred sores, it promotes hair growth.
Wu Xiufeng used it to smear on pediatric furuncles; after healing, if scars formed without hair regrowth, crushing and applying this remedy caused immediate hair growth.
Inserted into the nose, it treats trichiasis (Quanmao Daojie).
*Yuezhi*: In Yangchun, Guangdong, there is a bee that grows attached to olive trees. Although it has head and legs, it is indistinguishable from tree leaves until the leaves fall, at which point it can be collected. Locals keep it in chests; whenever gu poison is encountered, it chirps, seemingly calling out for itself. People also divine fortune or misfortune based on the clarity or muddiness of its sound. Wearing it wards off gu poison.
*Bencao Gangmu* only records the honeycomb (Fangzi), stating it enters the Foot-Yangming and Foot-Taiyin meridians, and does not record the use of the bee itself; *Chishui Yuanzhu* includes it in formulas for treating scrofula (Luoli), noting its tonifying effect comes later.
*Chishui Yuanzhu* states: Bees combined with apricot leaf (Xingren Ye), bat (Bianfu), and snake slough (Shetui) are miraculously effective in treating scrofula.
