People in the coastal regions often extract fish fat to make oil, using it as a substitute for vegetable bean oil. This oil is made by cutting open the bellies of sea eels (or similar fish) to take their fat or meat, and refining it into a salve. When burned for night illumination, it produces heavy smoke and a fishy odor, which can blur the eyes and damage the spirit. The lamp oil used in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang was derived from giant salamander fat, which refers to this type. Later generations often mistakenly interpreted "human fish" as referring to mermaid-like creatures. This oil can repel mosquitoes and moths, and fumigate bamboo and wood to remove insects.
This is the oil rendered from the flesh and fat of the spiny eel (or stingray). In Shandong, specimens are as large as cats; mountain people capture them, render their fat and meat, and obtain about one *dou* (approx. 10 liters) of oil. Used for night illumination, its light is clear and bright like daylight, even brighter than candlelight. This oil can be used in divine lamps for illumination. It is recorded that its fat can melt iron, and its bone can shrink human tendons and bones, indicating its nature is severe and potent. When placed in a divine lamp, its vapor can irradiate toxins, binding them to reduce their spread.
The Secret Instructions from Brocade Pouch provide a method for preparing Jiuku Dan (Salvation Pill): Zhen Shexiang (Moschus, Musk) 1 qian, Pi Sha (Cinnabar, Zhusha) water-triturated 2 qian, Hao Liuhuang (Sulfur) 3 qian. Each is ground into an extremely fine powder. First, melt the Sulfur, then add the Musk and Cinnabar. Stir evenly away from the fire. Spread thinly on a smooth stone, cut into small pieces resembling rice grains and broken rice husks, and store in a bottle without letting air escape. For treating diseases: Place the medicine on the affected area, ignite with a lamp flame, wait until the fire extinguishes, and apply the ash directly to the flesh. Recovery is immediate. For severe cases, use a size of a rice grain; for mild cases, use a size of broken rice. Place within the square hole of a copper coin, ignite with incense, requiring only the burning of one stick of incense, without need for further moxibustion. If the affected area is large, arrange several sticks in a row and moxa simultaneously. The heat during moxa is not intense, nor is the pain severe. After moxa, there is no suppuration. Within the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, chronic ailments vanish. This was transmitted by Guanyin Buddha and is truly a miraculous prescription. Additionally, the Sea Immortal Prescription also contains Jiuku Dan. Its method is: Moschus 5 fen, Cinnabar water-triturated 0.5 qian, Sulfur 5 qian, Zhangnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, Camphor) 0.5 qian. All are ground into fine powder, placed in a copper vessel, and melted over gentle and strong fire. Take after cooling and solidifying, crush into rice-grain-sized pieces. It can treat various wind-bi (Wind-Dampness Bi syndrome), traumatic injuries, carbuncles, and sores, effective in the early stages. I, Zhao Xuemin, note: These pills are artificially manufactured through various fire methods and are not naturally occurring medicinal materials. However, Materia Medica must record such preparation categories, similar to the inclusion of Divine Needles in Li Shizhen's Fire section. Therefore, they are recorded together with divine lamp oils to supplement what Li omitted.
It treats all pains caused by the flow of wind-cold-dampness pathogens, spasms of the hands and feet, hemiconvulsions in children, and deviation of the mouth and eyes. For women with epigastric and abdominal masses causing pain, regardless of duration, it can be used.
