(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Names] Jinjinu (from *Daming Bencao*), Wutengcai (from *Bencao Gangmu*).
Li Shizhen states: According to Li Yanshou's *History of the Southern Dynasties*, Emperor Gaozu of Song, Liu Yu, had the childhood name Jinnu. When he was of humble status, he was cutting reeds at Xinzhou when he encountered a large snake and shot it. The next day, he returned and heard the sound of pounding medicine. Following the sound, he saw several children dressed in green robes pounding medicine in a hazel forest. He asked them the reason. They replied, "Our master was shot by Liu Jinnu; we are now preparing medicine to apply." Liu Yu said, "Why do not the spirits kill me?" They answered, "Jinnu is destined to be a king; he cannot be killed." Liu Yu scolded them, and the children scattered. He then collected the herbs and returned. Whenever he encountered metal wounds (*Jinchuang*), applying this herb led to immediate healing. People therefore called this herb Liu Jinnu Cao. Zheng Qiao stated in *Tongzhi*: People in Jiangnan referred to "Liu" as "Jin" because in Han times, the character "Liu" was decomposed into "Mao-Jin-Dao" (卯金刀). Hence, it also has the name Jinjinu. People in Jiangdong call it Wutengcai.
[Collection and Description] Su Gong says: Liu Jinnu grows in Jiangnan. The stem resembles *Artemisia argyi* (Ai Hao), three to four chi tall. The leaves resemble those of *Cymbidium* (Shanlan) but are pointed and long. A single stem rises straight with an inflorescence; leaves are alternate. The seeds resemble barnyard grass (*Bai*) but are finer.
Bao Sheng says: It is currently produced in Yuezhou and belongs to the mugwort (*Hao*) category. It is four to five chi high. Leaves resemble chrysanthemum flowers. The flowers are white, and the fruit is yellowish-white in spikes. The aerial parts are harvested in summer and dried in the sun.
Su Song says: It is also found in Hezhong Prefecture, Mengzhou, Hanzhong, and Chuzhou. Seedlings emerge in spring. The stem resembles *A. argyi*, square in cross-section, two to three chi high. Leaves are green like willow leaves. In April, it opens small yellow and white flowers resembling *Sempervivum arachnoideum* (Wasong). In July, it bears seeds resembling millet but finer. The root is pale purple, resembling lettuce. The aerial parts and flower-seeds are commonly used, harvested in June and July.
Li Shizhen says: Liu Jinnu has a single upright stem. Leaves resemble *Atractylodes lancea* (Cangzhu), pointed, long, rough, and astringent to the touch, dark green on the upper surface and lighter on the lower. In September, the stem tip branches into several twigs, each cluster bearing ten small flowers with white petals and yellow stamens, resembling small chrysanthemums. After flowering, white down appears, similar to that of *Ixeris polycephala* (Kuxing). The seeds are slender, also resembling those of *Ixeris*. The description stating the fruit resembles millet or barnyard grass seems different from this specimen, and its leaves are not of the mugwort type.
Seed (The seedling is used similarly)
[Preparation] Lei Xiao says: Upon harvesting, remove stems and leaves, using only the seeds. Wipe off the thin husks with cloth until clean. Mix with wine and steam from Si hour (09:00-11:00) to Shen hour (15:00-17:00). Then dry in the sun for use.
Li Shizhen says: Stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds are all usable.
