(Compendium of Materia Medica)
[Names] Mumiezi (Bitter Gourd Seed, from *Paizhi Lun*), Huzhang (Tiger Palm, from *Rihua Bencao*).
Li Shizhen stated: This is the small, immature fruit of Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). Because it is small and funnel-shaped (loulan), it is named thus. The smallest variety of Xingxing (Arisaema Rhizoma) is called Huzhang. This herb resembles it, hence the shared name. The *Daming Huidian* records that Chengdu Prefecture in Sichuan annually paid tribute of twenty pairs of Tianxiong (Aconiti Radix), fifty pairs of Fuzi, fifty pairs of Wutou (Aconiti Radix), and twenty jin of Loulanzi. It is unknown what they were used for.
[Properties and Flavor] Bitter, acrid, toxic.
Someone said: Ingestion causes blindness.
[Indications] Malignant dysentery, cold-type fistulous sores, malignant ulcers, leprosy (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: According to Yang Shiying's *Zhizhi Fang*: For chronic fistulous sores lasting many years, if one wishes to restore the primordial yang qi, herbs like Loulanzi should be used with modifications. If inappropriate use occurs lightly, there is a fear that heat qi will exploit the deficiency, causing changes into tubercles, resulting in even greater harm. Furthermore, according to *Leibian*: A person had sores on both feet that were foul and ulcerated, difficult to approach. He stayed overnight under the shrine of the Five Ladies and dreamed that a deity taught him a prescription: Use one Loulanzi, grind it raw into powder, add a small amount of Nifen (Calomel), and mix with well water for topical application. Following this method, he was indeed cured. Generally, this herb is unsuitable for internal administration and is only appropriate for dermatological and surgical conditions.
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
For all types of malignant dysentery and intermittent dysentery: Baishui Wan (Hundred-Year Pill): Use one large Loulanzi, half a liang each of Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Ying Susuo (Papaveris Pericarpium). Stir-fry all until charred but retaining medicinal properties. Add a small amount of Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina), grind into powder, and make pills with paste the size of Sophora seeds. Take one pill per year of age, swallowed with rice drink. (Luo Tianyi, *Weisheng Baojian*)
(Natural Classic of Materia Medica, Lower Grade)
[Correction] Merged with Dubaicao (Herba Siegesbeckiae) from *Shiyi*.
[Names] Wuwei (Aconiti Radix Cum Radicula, from *Benjing*, i.e., Liangtoujian/Caulis Polygoni Cuspidati), Caowutou (Grass Aconite, from *Gangmu*), TuFuzi (Earth Fuzi, from *Rihua*), Xidu (from *Benjing*), Gengzi (from *Wu Pu*), Du Gong (from *Wu Pu*). Also Ji (pronounced ji), Jin (pronounced jin), Dubaicao (from *Shiyi*).
Wu Pu said: Wutou resembles the head of a crow. Those with two lobes joining like a crow's beak are named Wuwei. Wei means the beak of a crow.
Su Gong said: Wuwei is an alias for Wutou. There are varieties with three lobes, but those with two lobes are rare. If Wutou with two lobes is called Wuwei, then how are Tianxiong and Fuzi with two lobes named?
Li Shizhen said: This is wild Wutou growing elsewhere, commonly known as Caowutou (Grass Aconite), also called Zhujie Wutou (Bamboo-joint Aconite). Those from north of the river are called Hua Wutou. What *Rihua Zi* calls Tufuzi is this type. Wuwei refers to those occurring naturally with two lobes, now commonly called Liangtoujian (Two-headed Point), named after its shape, but essentially the same substance. Fuzi and Tianxiong with two natural lobes are also called Wuwei; their efficacy is similar to Tianxiong, not this Caowutou. Su Gong did not understand this meaning and thus doubted it. Caowutou juice is dried into poison for shooting animals, hence the name She Wang (Arrow Poison). The *Book of Later Wei* states: Outside the Liaodong pass, people harvest Wutou in autumn as poison to shoot animals. Chen Cangqi cited the *Continued Han Annals of Five Elements*, stating that the Western Regions produce Dubaicao, which is boiled into medicine, applied to arrows, and kills humans upon being shot. These are all this type of Wutou, not Chuan Wutou (Sichuan Aconite).
The *Ju Pu* (Record of Chrysanthemums) says: Yuanyang Ju (Mandarin Duck Chrysanthemum) is the seedling of Wuwei.
[Collection and Explanation] *Bielu* says: Wutou and Wuwei grow in the valleys of Langling. Harvested in the first and second lunar months, dried in the shade. Those longer than three cun are Tianxiong.
Wu Pu said: They begin growing in the first month, leaves are dense, stems are square and hollow, leaves are arranged in fours opposite each other, resembling Artemisia.
Tao Hongjing said: Currently harvested in the fourth month, also in the eighth month. Crush and press the stem juice, sun-dry and boil into She Wang. Hunters apply it to arrows; animals shot fall within ten steps, and humans die if hit, requiring rapid antidote treatment. Langling belongs to Runan Commandery.
Meng Xi said: Tufuzi (raw), remove skin, crush, filter juice clear, add fresh liquid and dry repeatedly to obtain paste, named She Wang, used to make poisonous arrows.
Li Shizhen said: Found everywhere. Roots, shoots, flowers, and fruits are identical to Chuan Wutou, except this is wild, lacks processing methods, has black exterior and white interior roots, wrinkled and dry, which is different, yet its toxicity is more severe. Duan Chengshi's *Youyang Zazu* mentions Queyu (Sparrow Taro) resembling a sparrow's head; placed on dry ground it becomes wet, on wet ground it becomes dry. Birds touching it fall, beasts encountering it stiffen. It seems similar to Caowutou but more toxic. It also mentions that in Wugou Mountain, Jining Commandery, there is Mumo Grass. If birds or sparrows accidentally ingest Wuwei and become poisoned, they must urgently eat this grass to detoxify. What is Mumo?
[Processing] Li Shizhen said: Caowutou can be used raw, processed (pao), or boiled with black soybeans to remove toxicity before use.
Wutou
[Properties and Flavor] Acrid, warm, highly toxic. *Bielu* says: Sweet, very hot, highly toxic.
Wu Pu said: Shen Nong, Lei Gong, Tong Jun, Huang Di: Sweet, toxic.
Li Quan said: Bitter, acrid, very hot, highly toxic.
Meng Xi said: Salty, acrid, hot, toxic.
Xu Zhicai said: Mangcao (Isatidis Folium) and Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix) are its guides. Antagonistic against Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Bailian (Pleurospermii Radix), Baiji (Glehniae Radix). Repelled by Lilu (Veratri Radix).
Li Shizhen said: Can restrain Dan Sha (Cinnabaris) and Pi Shi (Arsenolite). Avoid Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean). Feared by Yitang (Maltose), Heidou (Black Soybean), Lengshui (Cold Water), which can resolve its toxicity.
[Indications] Wind-stroke with aversion to wind, shivering sweating, dispelling cold-damp bi-obstruction, reversing cough and rebellious qi, breaking up accumulations of cold-heat. Its juice boiled is named She Wang, killing poultry and beasts (*Benjing*). Eliminating phlegm-cold in the chest, inability to eat, cold diseases of heart and abdomen, umbilical pain, scapular pain, inability to bend or extend, eye pain, inability to gaze long. Also induces abortion (*Bielu*).
Mastering aversion to wind and chill, cold-phlegm enveloping the heart, intestinal and abdominal pain, mass formations, toothache, enhancing yang function, strengthening willpower (Zhen Quan). Treating headache due to wind, throat obstruction, carbuncles, and sores (Li Shizhen).
Wuwei (Alias: Liangtoujian)
[Properties and Flavor] Acrid, slightly warm, highly toxic.
Wu Pu said: Shen Nong, Lei Gong, Tong Jun, Huang Di: Toxic.
Li Quan said: Bitter, acrid, very hot. Feared and antagonized similarly to Wutou.
[Indications] Wind-dampness, male kidney dampness with scrotal itching, alternating chills and fever in joints, pulling lower back pain, inability to walk, carbuncles with pus accumulation. Also induces abortion (*Bielu*). Male kidney qi deficiency, genital sweating, scrofula persisting for years without resolving (Zhen Quan).
She Wang
[Properties and Flavor] Bitter, highly toxic. Xu Zhicai said: Warm.
Meng Xi said: For poisoning by She Wang, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Lan Zhi (Isatidis Folium), Xiaodou Ye (Vigna Radiata Leaf), Fuping (Lemna Minor), cold water, and Qicai (Shepherd's Purse) can each be used singly to counteract it.
[Indications] Corpse-transmission hard masses, and wind-stroke bi-pain in the head (*Bielu*). Treating sore roots, tubercles, scrofula, toxic swellings, and snake bites. First apply around the four sides of the flesh, gradually approaching the sore. Feeling a tingling sensation, driving the disease to the bone. If the sore has hot pus and yellow fluid, apply it; if no pus/fluid, if there is fresh blood, or new broken wounds, do NOT apply, as it will kill immediately (Chen Cangqi).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: Caowutou and She Wang are extremely toxic drugs. Unlike Chuan Wutou and Fuzi, which are cultivated and processed to reduce toxicity, these are not. Unless for stubborn wind emergencies, do not administer lightly. Zhen Quan's *Yaoxing Lun* claims it enhances yang function and treats male kidney deficiency; this cannot be accepted rashly. Such herbs can only search out wind, overcome dampness, open stubborn phlegm, treat stubborn sores, and attack poison with poison. Do they possess the merit of Chuan Wutou and Fuzi in tonifying the right kidney and Mingmen? My acquaintance, Governor Hao of Qi, boasted of medical knowledge. Suffering from wind-tinea, he took excessive Caowutou and Mumiezi. Upon entering the stomach, he became paralyzed and died. How can one not be cautious?
Wang Ji said: Wuwei resembles a crow's beak; its qi is sharp and keen. No wonder it unblocks meridians, benefits joints, finds paths, and reaches the disease site directly. Boiled into She Wang, it kills animals. Is this not due to the sharpness and speed of its qi?
Yang Qingsou said: For wind-cold-damp bi, cold pain inside bones, injuries penetrating bone, chronic pain, or all yin abscesses and toxic swellings. It is suitable to use equal parts Caowutou and Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), with a little Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), ground to powder, mixed with ginger juice and hot wine for topical application. Unbroken ones can dissipate internally; long-standing ulcerated ones can remove black rot. Both herbs have pungent and harsh properties, capable of breaking evil masses, expelling cold-heat, dissolving when cold, and suppurating when hot.
