[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: It grows in the mountains of various prefectures in the southern regions. The branches and trunk are graceful, with tender shoots and dense leaves, remaining lush and green throughout the four seasons. At the transition between winter and spring, flowers bloom in clusters, measuring three to four *fen* in length, resembling *Dingxiang* (Caryophylli Flos / Clove), available in yellow, white, and purple colors. *Ge Gu Lun* records: *Rui Xiang* (Daphne odora) can grow up to three or four *chi* tall and has several varieties: those with leaves resembling *Pipa Ye* (Loquat Leaf), those with leaves resembling *Yangmei Ye* (Bayberry Leaf), those with leaves resembling *Ke Ye*, those bearing berry-like fruits, and those with twisted branches. Only the variety with twisted branches produces purple flowers with a strong fragrance, while the variety with leaves resembling Loquat Leaf bears fruit. It originally originated from Mount Lu; it was during the Song Dynasty that households began cultivating it, leading to its fame. The variety with twisted branches has nodes that are curved, appearing as if broken. Its root is soft and fragrant.
Root
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, salty, non-toxic.
[Indications] For *Ji Hou Feng* (Acute Wind-Stuffiness of the Throat / Acute Epiglottitis), use the white-flowered variety, grind it into water, and administer by irrigation (Li Shizhen, citing *Yixue Jicheng*).
(From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Names] Nai Hua.
Li Shizhen said: Ji Han's *Caomu Zhuang* writes it as "Mo Li"; *Luoyang Mingyuan Ji* writes it as "Mo Li"; Buddhist scriptures write it as "Mo Li"; Wang Guileng's collected works write it as "Mo Li"; Hong Mai's collected works write it as "Mo Li". It seems "Mo Li" is originally a Hu (foreign/barbarian) term without standard characters, written merely according to people's understanding. Wei Jun called it "Xia Ke" (Intimate Guest); Zhang Minshu called it "Yuan Ke" (Distant Guest). Yang Shen in *Danqian Lu* stated: In *Jin Shu*, it is recorded that people in the capital wore "Nai Hua", which is the current Mo Li Hua (Jasmine Flower).
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: *Moli* (Jasminum sambac) originally came from Persia and was transplanted to the South Sea region; currently, people in Yunnan and Guangdong cultivate it. Its nature fears cold and is not suitable for the central plains. It has weak stems and abundant branches, with round-tipped green leaves. In early summer, it opens small white flowers, double-petaled and stamenless, ceasing only at the end of autumn, and does not bear fruit. There are varieties with thousand petals, red ones, and creeping ones. All its flowers open at night, being fragrant and lovely. Women thread them as hair ornaments or mix them into facial creams. They can also be used to scent tea, or distilled to obtain liquid to substitute for *Qiangwei Shui* (Rose Water). There is another type similar to Jasmine but with larger petals and an exceptionally clear fragrance, called "Gou Ya" (Dog Tooth), also known as "Xue Ban" (Snow Petal), found in Hainan. *Suxing* (Jasminum grandiflorum) and *Zhijia* (Telosma cordata) are of the same category and are appended below.
Flower
[Flavor and Properties] Pungent, hot, non-toxic.
[Indications] Steamed oil extracted as liquid, made into facial cream and hair pomade, promotes hair growth, moisturizes dry skin, and makes the skin fragrant; can also be added to tea infusions (Li Shizhen).
Root
[Flavor and Properties] Hot, toxic.
[Indications] Ground with wine and one *cun* taken orally causes coma lasting one day before waking; two *cun* causes two days of coma; three *cun* causes three days of coma. For any traumatic injury resulting in joint dislocation, when setting the bone, this herb is used so that pain is not felt (Wang Ji).
[Appendix] Suxing Li Shizhen said: *Suxing* was also transplanted from the Western Regions, called "Yeximing Hua", which is the "Yeximi Hua" (Wild Honey Flower) recorded in *Youyang Zazu*. The branches and trunk are graceful, leaves are like Jasmine but smaller. The flowers are slender with four petals, in yellow and white colors. Harvested flowers are pressed for oil to condition hair, very fragrant and smooth.
