[NAMES] Shan La (from "Bencao Gangmu"), San Nai.
Li Shizhen said: San Nai is colloquially mispronounced as San Nai, and further erroneously as San Lai, all due to local dialects. Some say: It was originally named Shan La. Southerners pronounce "Shan" as "San" and "La" as "Lai", leading to the error. This explanation is very reasonable.
[COLLECTION AND EXPLANATION] Li Shizhen said: San Nai grows in Guangdong, where people cultivate it. The roots and leaves resemble ginger, possessing the aroma of camphor wood. Locals eat its roots like ginger. When cut and sun-dried, the skin becomes reddish-yellow, and the flesh white. The ancient "Lian Jiang" might belong to this category. Duan Chengshi's "Youyang Zazu" records: Nai only grows in Fulin Country. The seedling is three or four chi tall, the root is as large as a duck egg, the leaves resemble garlic, a long stalk emerges from the center, and six-petaled flowers appear at the stem tip, red and white, with a yellow-red center. It does not produce seeds. This herb grows in winter and dies in summer. Pressing the flowers to extract oil and applying it to the body removes wind pathogens. According to this description, it resembles San Nai, so it is appended here.
