【气味】大寒。
【主治】妇人崩中血不止，及产后血上薄心闷绝。伤身胎动下血，胎不落，堕坠 折，
瘀血留血，鼻衄吐血，皆捣饮之（《
血（甄权）。
【发明】好古曰∶生地黄入手少阴，又为手太阳之剂，故钱仲阳泻丙火与木通同用以
导赤也。诸经之血热，与他药相随，亦能治之。溺血、便血皆同。
权曰∶病患虚而多热者，宜加用之。
戴原礼曰∶阴微阳盛，相火炽强，来乘阴位，日渐煎熬，为虚火之证者，宜地黄之属，
以滋阴退阳。
宗 曰∶《本经》只言干、生二种，不言熟者。如血虚劳热，产后虚热，老人中虚燥热
者，若与生干，当虑太寒，故后世改用蒸曝熟者。生熟之功殊别，不可不详。
时珍曰∶《本经》所谓干地黄者，乃阴干、日干、火干者，故又云生者尤良。《别录》复
云生地黄者，乃新掘鲜者，故其性大寒。其熟地黄乃后人复蒸晒者。诸家本草皆指干地黄为
熟地黄，虽主治证同，而凉血、补血之功稍异，故今别出熟地黄一条于下。
熟地黄
【修治】颂曰∶作熟地黄法∶取肥地黄三二十斤净洗，别以拣下瘦短者三二十斤捣绞取
汁，投石器中，浸漉令浃，甑上浸三、四过，时时浸滤转蒸讫，又曝
如漆，味甘如饴。须瓷器收之，以其脂柔喜润也。
曰∶采生地黄去皮，瓷锅上柳木甑蒸之，摊令气歇，拌酒再蒸，又出令干。勿犯铜铁
器，令人肾消并发白，男损营，女损卫也。
时珍曰∶近时造法∶拣取沉水肥大者，以好酒入缩砂仁末在内，拌匀，柳木甑于瓦锅内
蒸令气透，晾干。再以砂仁酒拌蒸晾。如此九蒸九晾乃止。盖地黄性泥，得砂仁之香而窜，
合和五脏冲和之气，归宿丹田故也。今市中惟以酒煮熟售者，不可用。
【气味】甘、微苦，微温，无毒。
元素曰∶甘、微苦，寒。假酒力洒蒸，则微温而大补。味浓气薄，阴中之阳，沉也。入
手足少阴厥阴之经。治外治上
血凉血，滋阴补髓。
【主治】填骨髓，长肌肉，生精血，补五脏内伤不足，通血脉，利耳目，黑须发，男子
五劳七伤，女子伤中胞漏，经候不调，胎产百病（时珍）。补血气，滋肾水，益真阴，去脐
腹
急痛，病后胫股酸痛（元素）。坐而欲起，目
【发明】元素曰∶地黄生则大寒而凉血，血热者须用之；熟则微温而补肾，血衰者须用
之。又脐下痛属肾经，非熟地黄不能除，乃通肾之药也。
好古曰∶生地黄治心热、手足心热，入手足少阴厥阴，能益肾水，凉心血，其脉洪实者
宜之。若脉虚者，则宜熟地黄，假火力蒸九数，故能补肾中元气。仲景八味丸以之为诸药之
首，天一所生之源也。汤液四物汤治藏血之脏，以之为君者，癸乙同归一治也。
时珍曰∶按王硕《易简方》云∶男子多阴虚，宜用熟地黄；女子多血热，宜用生地黄。
又云∶生地黄能生精血，天门冬引入所生之处；熟地黄能补精血，用麦门冬引入所补之处。
虞搏《医学正传》云∶生地黄生血，而胃气弱者服之，恐妨食；熟地黄补血，而痰饮多者服
之，恐泥膈。或云∶生地黄酒炒则不妨胃，熟地黄姜汁炒则不泥膈。此皆得用地黄之精微者
也。
颂曰∶崔元亮《海上方》∶治一切心痛，无问新久。以生地黄一味，随人所食多少，捣
绞取汁，搜面作
患此病二年，深以为恨，临终戒其家人，吾死后当剖去病本。从其言果得虫，置于竹节中，
每所食皆饲之。因食地黄 亦与之，随即坏烂。由此得方。刘禹锡《传信方》亦纪其事云∶
贞元十年，通事舍人崔抗女，患心痛垂绝，遂作地黄冷淘食，便吐一物，可方寸匕，状如蛤
蟆，无足目，似有口，遂愈。冷淘勿着
【附方】旧十二，新五十三。
可丸，丸如梧子大。每晨温酒送下三十丸，日三服。亦可以青州枣和丸。或别以干地黄末入
膏，丸服亦可。百日面如桃花，三年身轻不老。《抱朴子》云∶楚文子服地黄八年，夜视有
光。（《神仙方》）
三捣三压，取汁令尽，以瓦器盛之，密盖勿泄气，汤上煮减半，绞去滓，再煎如饧，丸弹子
大。每温酒服一丸，日二服。（《千金》）
斤半，生姜半斤（绞取汁），蜜二升，酒四升。文武火煮地黄汁数沸，即以酒研紫苏子四两，
取汁入煎一二十沸，下胶；胶化，下姜汁、蜜再煎；候稠，瓦器盛之。每空心酒化一匕服，
大补益。（同上）
地黄粥∶大能利血生精。地黄（切）二合，与米同入罐中煮之，候熟，以酥二合，蜜一
合，
同炒香入内，再煮熟食。（《 仙神隐》）
地黄酒∶见谷部酒下。
疽劳
瘵，咳嗽唾血等病，乃铁瓮城申先生方也∶生地黄汁十六斤（取汁），人参末一斤半，白茯
苓
末三斤，白沙蜜十斤，滤净拌匀，入瓶内，箬封，安砂锅中，桑柴火煮三日夜。再换蜡纸重
封，浸井底一夜，取起，再煮一伏时。每以白汤或酒点服一匙。
丹溪云∶好色虚人，咳嗽唾血者，服之甚捷。国朝太医院进御服食，议加天门冬、麦门
冬、
枸杞子末各一斤，赐名益寿永真。《 仙方》∶
明目补肾∶生 、熟 各二两，川椒红一两，为末，蜜丸梧桐子大，每空心盐汤下三十
丸。（《普济方》）
固齿乌须，一治齿痛，二生津液，三变白须，其功极妙。地黄五斤，柳木甑内，以土盖
上，蒸熟晒干。如此三次，捣为小饼。每噙咽一枚。（《御药院方》）
男女虚损，或大病后，或积劳后，四体沉滞，骨肉酸痛，吸吸少气，或小腹拘急，腰背
强痛，咽干唇燥，或饮食无味，多卧少起，久者积年，轻者百日，渐至瘦削∶用生地黄二斤，
面一斤。捣烂，炒干为末。每空心酒服方寸匕，日三服。忌如法。（《肘后方》）。
虚劳困乏∶地黄一石，取汁，酒三斗，搅匀煎收。日服。（《必效方》）
口干心躁∶熟地黄五两，水三盏，煎一盏半，分三服，一日尽。（《圣惠方》）
骨蒸劳热∶张文仲方∶用生地黄一斤，捣三度，绞取汁尽，分再服。若利即减之，以身
轻凉为度。（《外台秘要》）
妇人发热，欲成劳病，肌瘦食减，经候不调∶地髓煎∶用干地黄一斤，为末，炼蜜丸梧
子大，每酒服五十丸。（《保庆集》）
妇人劳热心忪∶地黄煎∶用生，干地黄、熟干地黄等分，为末，生姜自然汁，入水相
和，打糊丸梧子大。每服三十丸，用地黄汤下，或酒醋茶汤下亦可，日二服。觉脏腑虚冷，
则晨服八味丸，地黄性冷坏脾。阴虚则发热，地黄补阴血故也。（《妇人良方》）
咳嗽唾血劳瘦骨蒸，日晚寒热∶生地黄汁三合，煮白粥临熟，入地黄汁搅匀，空心食之。

吐血咳嗽∶熟地黄末，酒服一钱，日三。（《圣惠方》）
吐血不止∶生地黄汁一升二合，白胶香二两，以瓷器盛，入甑蒸，令胶消，服之。（《梅

一两，分三服。心热吐衄，脉洪数者。生 汁半升，熬至一合，入大黄末一两，待成膏，丸

冷水调下。（孙兆《秘宝方》） 吐血便血∶地黄汁六合，铜器煎沸，入牛皮胶一两，待化
入姜汁半杯，分三服，便止。或微转一行，不妨。（《圣惠方》）肠风下血 生地黄、熟地黄
（并酒浸）、五味子等分，为末，以炼蜜丸梧子大，每酒下七十丸。（《百一选方》）初生
便血，小儿初生七、八日，大小便血出，乃热传心肺∶不可服凉药，只以生地黄汁五七匙，
酒半匙，蜜半匙，和服之。（《全幼心鉴》）
小便尿血吐血，及耳鼻出血∶生地黄汁半升，生姜汁半合，蜜一合，和服。（《圣惠方》）
小便血淋∶生地黄汁、车前叶汁各三合，和煎服。（《圣惠方》）
小儿蛊痢∶生 汁一升二合，分三、四服，立效。（《子母秘录》）
月水不止∶生地黄汁，每服一盏，酒一盏，煎服，日二次。（《千金方》）
而无子，乃冲任伏热也∶熟
地黄半斤，当归二两，黄连一两，并酒浸一夜，焙研为末，炼蜜丸梧子大。每服七十丸，米
饮温酒任下。（禹讲师方）
妊娠漏胎，下血不止∶《百一方》∶用生地黄汁一升，渍酒四合，煮三、五沸服之。不止
又服。
崔氏方∶用生地黄为末，酒服方寸匕，日一夜一。《经心录》∶加干姜为末。《保命集》∶
二黄丸∶用生地黄、熟地黄
等分，为末。每服半两，白术、枳壳煎汤，空心调下，日二服。
胎寒腹痛，妊妇冲任脉虚，惟宜抑阳助阴∶内补丸∶用熟地黄二两，当归一两，微炒为
末，蜜丸梧子大，每温酒下三十丸。（许学士《本事方》）
妊娠胎动∶生地黄捣汁，煎沸，入鸡子白一枚，搅服。（《圣惠方》）
产后血痛有块，并经脉行后，腹痛不调∶黑神散∶用熟地黄一斤，陈生姜半斤，同炒干
为末。每服二钱，温酒调下。（《妇人良方》）
产后恶血不止∶干地黄捣末，每食前热酒服一钱，连进三服。（《瑞竹堂方》）
产后中风，胁不得转∶交加散∶用生地黄五两（研汁），生姜五两（取汁）。交互相浸一
夕，
次日各炒黄，浸汁干，乃焙为末。每酒服一方寸匕。（《济生方》）
产后烦闷，乃血气上冲∶生地黄汁、清酒各一升，相和煎沸，分二服。（《集验方》）
产后百病∶地黄酒∶用地黄汁渍曲二升，净秫米二斗，令发，如常酿之。至熟，封七日，
取清，常服令相接。忌生冷、酢、滑蒜、鸡、猪、鱼一切毒物。未产先一月酿成。夏月不可
造。（《千金方》）
胞衣不出∶生地黄汁一升，苦酒三合，相和暖服。
寒疝绞痛来去∶用乌鸡一只（治如常法），生地黄七斤（锉细）。甑中同蒸，下以铜器承
取汁。清旦服，至日晡令尽。其间当下诸寒 讫，作白粥食之。久疝者作三剂。（《肘后方》）
小儿阴肿∶以葱椒汤暖处洗之，唾调地黄末敷之。外肾热者，鸡子清调。或加牡蛎少许。

一切痈疽，及打扑伤损，未破疼痛者∶以生地黄杵如泥，摊在上，掺木香末于中，又摊
地黄泥一重贴之，不过三五度即内消也。（王衮《博济方》）
打扑损伤，骨碎及筋伤烂∶用生地黄熬膏裹之。以竹简编夹急缚，勿令转动。一日一夕，

苦。急召田录事视之，曰∶尚可救。乃以药封肿处，中夜方苏，达旦痛止，痛处已白。日日
换贴，其瘀肿移至肩背，乃以药下去黑血三升而愈。即上方也（出《肘后方》中）。损伤打
扑瘀血在腹者∶用生地黄汁三升，酒一升半，煮二升半，分三服。（出《千金方》）
物伤睛突，轻者睑胞肿痛，重者目睛突出，但目系未断者∶即纳入，急捣生地黄，绵裹
敷之。仍以避风膏药，护其四边。（《圣济总录》）睡起目赤肿起，良久如常者，血热也。卧
则血归于肝，故热则目赤肿。良久血散，故如常也∶用生地黄汁，浸粳米半升，晒干，三浸
三晒。每夜以米煮粥食一盏，数日即愈。有人病此，用之得效。（《医余》）
眼暴赤痛∶水洗生地黄、黑豆各二两，捣膏。卧时以盐汤洗目，闭目以药浓罨目上，至
晓，水润取下。（《圣济总录》）
蓐内赤目∶生地黄薄切，温水浸贴。（《短剧方》）牙疳宣露，脓血口气∶生地黄一斤，
盐二合，末，自捣和团，以面包煨令烟断，去面入麝一分，研匀，日夜贴之。（《圣济录》）
牙齿挺长，出一分者∶常咋生地黄，甚妙。（张文仲《备急方》）
牙动欲脱∶生地黄绵裹咂之，令汁渍根，并咽之，日五六次。（《千金方》）
食蟹龈肿，肉 出者∶生地黄汁一

须发黄赤∶生地黄一斤，生姜半斤，各洗，研自然汁，留滓。用不蛀皂角十条，去皮弦
，蘸汁，炙至汁尽为度。同滓入罐内泥固， 存性，为末，用铁器盛。末三钱汤调，停二日
，临卧刷染须发上，即黑。（《本事方》）
竹木入肉∶生地黄嚼烂罨之。（《救急方》）
毒箭入肉∶煎生地黄汁作丸服。至百日，箭出。（《千金方》）
犬咬伤∶地黄捣汁，饭饼涂之，百度愈。（《百一方》）
【气味】性大寒。
【主治】治疗妇女崩中（非经期大量阴道出血）且经血不止，以及产后恶露上冲心胸导致胸闷气绝。对于损伤身体、胎动不安下血、胎盘滞留不下、跌打坠伤造成的瘀血停留，以及鼻出血、吐血等症状，均将生地黄捣烂取汁服用。（甄权记载）
【发明】王好古说：生地黄入入手少阴心经，也是手太阳小肠经的药物，所以钱乙（钱仲阳）在泻心火时与木通同用，以引导心火下行从小便排出（导赤散）。各经的血热证，配合其他药物跟随使用，也能治疗。尿血、便血也都同样适用。
甄权说：病人身体虚弱而内热多的，适宜加用生地黄。
戴原礼说：阴气微弱而阳气亢盛，相火炽烈强盛，侵犯阴位，日渐煎熬，形成虚火证候的，适宜用地黄这类药物，来滋阴以退阳。
陈承说：《神农本草经》只提到干地黄和生地黄两种，没有提到熟地黄。如果是血虚引起的劳热、产后虚热、老人中焦虚弱引起的燥热，如果使用生地黄或干地黄，应当担心其过于寒凉，所以后世改用蒸晒过的熟地黄。生地和熟地的功效截然不同，不可不详细分辨。
李时珍说：《神农本草经》所说的干地黄，是指阴干、日晒干、火烤干的，所以说鲜生的效果更好。《名医别录》又补充说生地黄是指新挖掘的新鲜地黄，所以它的药性大寒。所谓的熟地黄是后人再次经过蒸晒制成的。各家本草著作都指干地黄就是熟地黄，虽然主治证候相同，但在凉血、补血的功效上略有差异，所以现在单独列出熟地黄一条在下面。
熟地黄
【修治】苏颂说：制作熟地黄的方法：选取肥大地黄三二十斤洗净，另外挑选瘦小短小的地黄三二十斤捣碎绞取汁液，投入石器中浸泡过滤使其渗透，在甑上浸渍三四次，时时浸滤并转蒸完成后，再曝晒至像漆一样黑亮，味道甘甜如饴糖。必须用瓷器收藏，因为它的脂膏柔润喜欢湿润。
寇宗奭说：采摘生地黄去皮，在瓷锅上的柳木甑中蒸制，摊开让热气散发，拌酒后再次蒸制，取出晾干。不要接触铜铁器具，否则会导致肾精亏损并发出白发，男子损伤营血，女子损伤卫气。
李时珍说：近时的制作方法：挑选沉水肥大的地黄，用好酒加入缩砂仁末在内，拌匀，用柳木甑在瓦锅内蒸透热气，晾干。再用砂仁酒拌蒸晾。如此九蒸九晒才停止。大概是因为地黄性质黏腻，得到砂仁的香气而能行窜，调和五脏冲和之气，归宿于丹田的缘故。现在市面上只用酒煮熟的出售，不能使用。
【气味】味甘、微苦，微温，无毒。
张元素说：味甘、微苦，性寒。借助酒力洒蒸后，则变为微温且具有大补作用。味道浓重而气味淡薄，属于阴中之阳，性质沉降。入足少阴肾经、手少阴心经、足厥阴肝经、手厥阴心包经。治疗外部和上部因血热引起的病症，具有凉血、滋阴补髓的功效。
【主治】填补骨髓，生长肌肉，生成精血，补益五脏内部损伤不足，疏通血脉，使耳目聪明，使胡须头发变黑，治疗男子五劳七伤，女子伤中胞漏（子宫出血），月经不调，以及妊娠分娩的各种疾病。（李时珍记载）补益气血，滋润肾水，增益真阴，去除脐腹部的急痛，病后小腿和大腿酸痛。（张元素记载）坐立不安想起身，眼睛视物不清。
【发明】张元素说：生地黄性大寒而能凉血，血热者必须使用；熟地黄性微温而能补肾，血衰者必须使用。又说脐下疼痛属于肾经，不用熟地黄不能消除，它是通利肾经的药物。
王好古说：生地黄治疗心热、手足心热，入手足少阴、厥阴经，能益肾水、凉心血，脉象洪实者适宜使用。如果脉象虚弱，则适宜用熟地黄，借助火力蒸九次，所以能补肾中元气。张仲景的八味丸将其作为诸药之首，是天一所生的源泉。汤液四物汤治疗藏血的脏器，将其作为君药，是因为癸水（肾）和乙木（肝）同归于一治。
李时珍说：据王硕《易简方》记载：男子多阴虚，适宜用熟地黄；女子多血热，适宜用生地黄。又说：生地黄能生成精血，天门冬引入所生成的地方；熟地黄能补益精血，麦门冬引入所补益的地方。虞搏《医学正传》说：生地黄生血，但胃气虚弱的人服用，恐怕妨碍饮食；熟地黄补血，但痰饮多的人服用，恐怕阻滞胸膈。有人说生地黄用酒炒则不妨碍胃，熟地黄用姜汁炒则不阻滞胸膈。这些都是懂得运用地黄精微之处的人。
苏颂说：崔元亮《海上方》：治疗各种心痛，无论新久。只用生地黄一味，根据患者进食量的多少，捣烂绞取汁液，用来和面做成面条（冷淘）。患此病两年，深感遗憾，临终告诫家人，我死后应当剖开去除病根。听从他的话果然得到了虫子，放在竹节中，每次吃的东西都喂养它。因为吃了地黄也喂给它，随即腐烂。由此得到这个方子。刘禹锡《传信方》也记载此事说：贞元十年，通事舍人崔抗的女儿，患心痛几乎断气，于是做地黄冷淘吃，吐出一个东西，大约一方寸匕大小，形状像蛤蟆，没有脚和眼睛，似乎有口，于是痊愈。冷淘不要沾……
【附方】旧方十二首，新方五十三首。
可以做成丸药，梧桐子大小。每晨用温酒送下三十丸，每日三次。也可以用青州枣和丸。或者另外用干地黄末加入膏剂中，制成丸药服用也可以。百日后面色如桃花，三年身体轻盈不老。《抱朴子》说：楚文子服用地黄八年，晚上看东西有光。（《神仙方》）
三次捣碎三次压榨，取尽汁液，用瓦器盛装，严密盖住不要泄气，在汤上煮减半，绞去渣滓，再煎至如饴糖状，制成弹子大小的丸药。每次用温酒送服一丸，每日两次。（《千金方》）
地黄一斤半，生姜半斤（绞取汁），蜂蜜二升，酒四升。用文武火煮地黄汁数沸，然后用酒研磨紫苏子四两，取汁加入煎煮一二十沸，下阿胶；胶融化后，下姜汁、蜂蜜再煎；待稠厚，用瓦器盛装。每次空腹用酒化开一匕服用，大补益。（同上）
地黄粥：大能利血生精。地黄（切）二合，与米一同放入罐中煮，待煮熟，加入酥油二合、蜂蜜一合，一同炒香后加入，再煮熟食用。（《仙神隐方》）
地黄酒：见谷部酒条之下。
治疗疽劳、瘵病、咳嗽唾血等病，这是铁瓮城申先生的方子：生地黄汁十六斤（取汁），人参末一斤半，白茯苓末三斤，白沙蜜十斤，过滤干净拌匀，装入瓶内，用箬叶密封，安放在砂锅中，用桑柴火煮三天三夜。再换蜡纸重新密封，浸入井底一夜，取出，再煮一个时辰。每次用白开水或酒点服一匙。
朱丹溪说：好色体虚之人，咳嗽唾血的，服用此方非常快捷。本朝太医院进献御用的食品，商议加入天门冬、麦门冬、枸杞子末各一斤，赐名益寿永真。《仙方》：
明目补肾：生地黄、熟地黄各二两，川椒红一两，研为末，蜂蜜丸梧桐子大小，每次空腹盐汤送下三十丸。（《普济方》）

妇人发热，欲成劳病，肌肉消瘦食量减少，月经不调：地髓煎：用干地黄一斤，研为末，炼蜜丸梧桐子大小，每次酒送服五十丸。（《保庆集》）
妇人劳热心悸：地黄煎：用生地黄、干地黄、熟干地黄等分，研为末，生姜自然汁，加水调和，打糊丸梧桐子大小。每次服三十丸，用地黄汤送下，或用酒醋茶汤送下也可，每日两次。觉得脏腑虚冷，则早晨服八味丸，因为地黄性冷会坏脾。阴虚则发热，地黄补阴血故也。（《妇人良方》）
咳嗽唾血劳瘦骨蒸，傍晚寒热：生地黄汁三合，煮白粥临熟时，加入地黄汁搅匀，空腹食用。（《食医心镜》）

崔氏方：用生地黄为末，酒送服方寸匕，日一夜一次。《经心录》：加干姜为末。《保命集》：二黄丸：用生地黄、熟地黄等分，研为末。每次服半两，白术、枳壳煎汤，空腹调下，每日两次。
胎寒腹痛，妊妇冲任脉虚，惟宜抑阳助阴：内补丸：用熟地黄二两，当归一两，微炒为末，蜜丸梧桐子大小，每次温酒送下三十丸。（许学士《本事方》）

物体伤睛突，轻者眼睑胞肿痛，重者目睛突出，但目系未断者：即纳入，急忙捣生地黄，绵裹敷之。仍以避风膏药，护其四边。（《圣济总录》）睡起目赤肿起，良久如常者，这是血热。卧则血归于肝，所以热则目赤肿。良久血散，所以如常也：用生地黄汁，浸粳米半升，晒干，三浸三晒。每晚以米煮粥食一盏，数日即愈。有人病此，用之得效。（《医余》）

须发黄赤：生地黄一斤，生姜半斤，各洗，研自然汁，留滓。用不蛀皂角十条，去皮弦，蘸汁，炙至汁尽为度。同滓入罐内泥固，存性，为末，用铁器盛。末三钱汤调，停二日，临卧刷染须发上，即黑。（《本事方》）

[Scent and Flavor] Extremely cold.
[Indications] Treats women with metrorrhagia (heavy non-menstrual vaginal bleeding) where blood does not stop, as well as postpartum lochia rushing up to the heart causing chest tightness and syncope. For injuries damaging the body, restless fetus with lower bleeding, retained placenta, falls and fractures, stasis of blood, epistaxis (nosebleed), and hematemesis (vomiting blood), all are treated by crushing and drinking the juice (recorded by Zhen Quan).
[Elucidation] Wang Haogu said: Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) enters the Hand Shaoyin (Heart) meridian and is also a remedy for the Hand Taiyang (Small Intestine) meridian. Therefore, Qian Yi (Qian Zhongyang) uses it together with Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla) to clear Heart fire and guide it out through urination (Dao Chi San). It can treat blood heat in various meridians when accompanied by other herbs. Hematuria (blood in urine) and rectal bleeding are treated similarly.
Zhen Quan said: For patients who are deficient and have much internal heat, it is suitable to add its use.
Dai Yuanli said: When Yin is weak and Yang is flourishing, Ministerial Fire (Xiang Huo) is intense and strong, invading the Yin positions, slowly simmering day by day, forming symptoms of deficiency fire, remedies such as Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) should be used to nourish Yin and subdue Yang.
Chen Cheng said: The *Shennong Bencao Jing* only mentions dried and raw types, not cooked ones. For blood deficiency causing labor fever, postpartum deficiency heat, or elderly people with middle jiao deficiency causing dry heat, if using raw or dried forms, one must worry about them being too cold. Thus, later generations changed to using steamed and sun-dried cooked forms. The effects of raw and cooked forms are significantly different and must be carefully distinguished.
Li Shizhen said: What the *Shennong Bencao Jing* calls Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmanniae Radix) refers to those dried in shade, sun-dried, or fire-dried, hence it says fresh ones are even better. The *Mingyi Bielu* further states that Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) refers to newly dug fresh roots, hence its nature is extremely cold. The so-called Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) is made by later generations re-steaming and sun-drying. Various materia medica texts point to Dried Rehmannia as Prepared Rehmannia; although their indications are similar, their functions in cooling blood and tonifying blood differ slightly. Therefore, I now list Prepared Rehmannia separately below.
Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Dihuang)
[Processing] Su Song said: The method for making Prepared Rehmannia: Take 30-20 jin of plump Rehmannia, wash it clean. Separately take 30-20 jin of thin and short pieces, crush and squeeze to extract juice. Pour into a stone vessel, soak and filter until permeated. Steam over a steamer three or four times, soaking and filtering periodically. After steaming is complete, sun-dry until black like lacquer, sweet in taste like malt syrup. Must be stored in porcelain vessels because its oily softness prefers moisture.
Kou Zongshi said: Harvest raw Rehmannia, peel it, steam it in a willow-wood steamer over a porcelain pot. Spread it out to let the heat dissipate, mix with wine, steam again, take out and dry. Do not touch copper or iron vessels, as this causes kidney essence depletion and white hair, damaging Ying (Nutritive) Qi in men and Wei (Defensive) Qi in women.
Li Shizhen said: The contemporary method: Select heavy, plump pieces. Mix with good wine and crushed Amomum fruit powder. Steam thoroughly in a willow-wood steamer over a clay pot, then dry. Repeat mixing with Amomum-wine and steaming/drying. Stop after nine steams and nine dryings. This is because Rehmannia has a muddy/sticky nature; getting the fragrance of Amomum allows it to circulate, harmonizing the harmonious Qi of the five zang organs, returning to the Dantian. Currently, only those boiled in wine are sold in markets, which should not be used.
[Scent and Flavor] Sweet, slightly bitter, slightly warm, non-toxic.
Zhang Yuansu said: Sweet, slightly bitter, cold. With the power of wine and steaming, it becomes slightly warm and greatly tonifying. Strong flavor but thin aroma, Yang within Yin, sinking. Enters the Foot Shaoyin (Kidney), Hand Shaoyin (Heart), Foot Jueyin (Liver), and Hand Jueyin (Pericardium) meridians. Treats external and upper conditions related to blood heat, having the effects of cooling blood, nourishing Yin, and supplementing marrow.
[Indications] Fills bone marrow, grows muscles, generates essence and blood, tonifies insufficiency of internal injury to the five zang organs, unblocks blood vessels, benefits ears and eyes, darkens beard and hair, treats men's five labors and seven injuries, women's uterine leakage, irregular menstruation, and hundred diseases of pregnancy and childbirth (Li Shizhen). Tonifies Qi and blood, moistens Kidney water, benefits True Yin, removes urgent pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, and soreness/aching in shins and thighs after illness (Zhang Yuansu). Restlessness wanting to rise, blurred vision.
[Elucidation] Zhang Yuansu said: Raw Rehmannia is extremely cold and cools blood; it must be used for blood heat. Cooked Rehmannia is slightly warm and tonifies the Kidney; it must be used for blood deficiency. Also, pain below the umbilicus belongs to the Kidney meridian; without Prepared Rehmannia it cannot be removed; it is a herb that unblocks the Kidney meridian.
Wang Haogu said: Raw Rehmannia treats Heart heat and heat in the palms and soles, entering the Hand and Foot Shaoyin and Jueyin meridians, benefiting Kidney water and cooling Heart blood; it is suitable for those with surging and solid pulses. If the pulse is deficient, Prepared Rehmannia is suitable. Steamed nine times with fire power, it can tonify the Original Qi in the Kidney. Zhang Zhongjing's Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) uses it as the chief among all herbs, the source of Tianyi (Heaven One). Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) treats the organ storing blood, using it as the sovereign herb, because Gui Water (Kidney) and Yi Wood (Liver) return to one treatment.
Li Shizhen said: According to Wang Shuo's *Yi Jian Fang*: Men often have Yin deficiency and should use Prepared Rehmannia; women often have blood heat and should use Raw Rehmannia. It also says: Raw Rehmannia generates essence and blood, and Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix) guides it to where it is generated; Prepared Rehmannia tonifies essence and blood, and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) guides it to where it is tonified. Yu Bo's *Yi Xue Zheng Chuan* says: Raw Rehmannia generates blood, but those with weak Stomach Qi may find it hinders food intake; Prepared Rehmannia tonifies blood, but those with much phlegm-fluid may find it clogs the diaphragm. Some say frying Raw Rehmannia in wine does not hinder the stomach, and frying Prepared Rehmannia in ginger juice does not clog the diaphragm. These are all those who understand the subtleties of using Rehmannia.
Su Song said: Cui Yuanliang's *Hai Shang Fang*: Treats all kinds of heart pain, regardless of new or old. Use only Raw Rehmannia, according to the amount the patient eats, crush and squeeze to get juice, knead into dough to make noodles (Leng Tao). Having suffered this disease for two years, deeply regretting it, he warned his family before death that after his death they should剖 (dissect) to remove the root of the disease. Following his words, they indeed got a worm, placed it in a bamboo joint, feeding it everything he ate. Because he ate Rehmannia, they fed it to the worm, and it immediately rotted. From this, the formula was obtained. Liu Yuxi's *Chuan Xin Fang* also records this event: In the tenth year of Zhenyuan, the daughter of Tong Shi She Ren Cui Kang suffered from heart pain nearly dying, so she made Rehmannia Leng Tao and ate it, then vomited an object, about one cun square in size, shaped like a frog, without feet or eyes, seeming to have a mouth, and then recovered. [Attached Formulas] Twelve old formulas, fifty-three new formulas.
Can be made into pills, size of wu zi (velvet tree seeds). Each morning send down thirty pills with warm wine, three times a day. Can also make pills with Qingzhou dates. Or separately add Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmannia) powder into paste, make pills and take. Within one hundred days face like peach blossoms, within three years body light and not aging. *Baopuzi* says: Chu Wenzi took Rehmannia for eight years, seeing light at night. (*Shenxian Fang*)
Crush and press three times, take juice completely, store in a clay vessel, cover tightly to prevent gas leakage, boil over water until half reduced, strain off dregs, boil again until like syrup, make pill-sized balls. Each time take one pill with warm wine, twice a day. (*Qianjin Fang*)
Gan Dihuang (Dried Rehmannia) one jin half, Ginger half jin (squeeze juice), Honey two sheng, Wine four sheng. Boil Gan Dihuang juice over mild and strong fire for several boils, then grind Zi Su Zi (Perilla Seed) four liang with wine, take juice and add to decoction boil ten to twenty boils, add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin); when gelatin melts, add Ginger juice and Honey, decoct again; when thick, store in clay vessel. Each time empty stomach dissolve one bi with wine and take, greatly tonifies and benefits. (Same above)
Dihuang Porridge: Greatly promotes blood flow and generates essence. Dihuang (cut) two he, cook together with rice in a jar. When cooked, add Su (butter/ghee) two he, Honey one he, stir-fry fragrant together and add inside, cook熟 (cooked) again and eat. (*Xian Shen Yin Fang*)

Treats Ju Lao (carbuncle-labor), Zhai (tuberculosis-like disease), coughing and spitting blood etc., this is Master Shen from Tie Weng City's formula: Sheng Dihuang Zhi (Raw Rehmannia Juice) sixteen jin (extract juice), Ren Shen (Ginseng) mo (powder) one jin half, Bai Fu Ling (Poria) mo (powder) three jin, Bai Sha Mi (White Sand Honey) ten jin, filter clean and mix evenly, put in bottle, seal with Ru Ye (Bamboo Leaf), place in sand pot, boil with Sang Chai Huo (Mulberry Fire) for three days and nights. Change to wax paper and reseal heavily, soak at bottom of well for one night, take out, boil again for one fu shi (4 hours). Each time take one spoonful with white water or wine.
Danxi said: People with lust-induced deficiency, coughing and spitting blood, taking this is very fast. Our dynasty's Imperial Hospital submitted it for imperial consumption, discussed adding Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) mo (powder) each one jin, named Yi Shou Yong Zhen. *Xian Fang*:
Brighten eyes and tonify Kidney: Sheng, Shu Dihuang (Raw and Prepared Rehmannia) each two liang, Chuan Jiao Hong (Sichuan Pepper Red) one liang, make powder, honey pills wu zi size, each time empty stomach salt water down thirty pills. (*Pu Ji Fang*)
Solidify teeth and blacken beard, one treats toothache, two generates fluids, three turns white beard black, its merit is extremely wonderful. Dihuang five jin, in willow steamer, cover with earth on top, steam cooked and sun dry. Do this three times, crush into small cakes. Each time hold in mouth and swallow one cake. (*Yu Yao Yuan Fang*)
Men and women deficiency damage, or after severe illness, or after accumulated labor, limbs heavy and stagnant, bone and flesh soreness, shallow breathing, or lower abdomen tension, back and waist stiffness/pain, dry throat and lips, or no taste in food, lying much rising little, long term accumulates years, light term one hundred days, gradually becoming emaciated: Use Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia) two jin, Mian (Flour) one jin. Crush rotten, stir-fry dry make powder. Each time empty stomach wine send down fang cun bi (square inch scoop), three times a day. Taboos as per method. (*Zhou Hou Fang*)
Xu Lao Kun Fa (Deficiency Labor Exhaustion): Dihuang one shi (10 dan), take juice, Jiu (Wine) three dou, stir evenly boil and collect. Daily take. (*Bi Xiao Fang*)
Kou Gan Xin Zao (Dry Mouth Heart Restlessness): Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmannia) five liang, Water three zhan, decoct to one zhan half, divide into three doses, finish in one day. (*Sheng Hui Fang*)
Gu Zheng Lao Re (Bone-steaming Labor Heat): Zhang Wenzhong Formula: Use Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia) one jin, crush three times, squeeze juice completely, divide into two doses. If diarrhea occurs reduce dose, stop when body feels light and cool. (*Wai Tai Mi Yao*)
