[Names] Huijian (Ash Alkali), Huajian (Flower Alkali).
Li Shizhen stated: Its appearance resembles stone alkali, hence it is also named "Jian" (Alkali).
[Collection and Explanation] Li Shizhen stated: Shi Jian (Stone Alkali) is produced in places such as Jining, Shandong. The local people harvest plants like Artemisia (Mugwort) and Polygonum (Smartweed), dig pits to soak them in water, remove them, dry them in the sun, and burn them into ash. They then leach the ash with the original water to extract the juice. For every hundred jin of juice, two or three jin of flour are added. Over time, it solidifies and precipitates like stone. It is sold along with the juice to various regions for washing clothes and leavening dough, yielding considerable profit. In other places, thick lye from kitchen stove ash is used, which also removes grease and aids in leavening.
[Properties and Flavor] Acrid, Bitter, Warm, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Eliminates damp-heat, stops heart pain, resolves phlegm, grinds down accumulations, removes food stagnation, washes away dirt and grease. Use should be measured according to the patient's deficiency or excess; excessive consumption damages the body (Zhu Zhenheng). Kills dental worms, removes corneal opacity (pterygium/leukoma), treats dysphagia and regurgitation. When combined with Duan Shi (Calcined Gypsum/Lime), it can corrode flesh, ulcerate carbuncles, sores, and scrofula, remove blood stasis, and cauterize moles, warts, hemorrhoidal nodes with divine efficacy (Li Shizhen).
