(Recorded in the Lower Grade of *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
**[Names]** Jie Xi (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*), Qian Fen (Lead Carbonate, from *Bencao Gangmu*), Qian Hua (Lead Powder, from *Bencao Gangmu*), Hu Fen (Barbarian Powder, referred to by Tao Hongjing), Ding Fen (Fixed Powder, from *Yaoxing Lun*), Wa Fen (Tile Powder, from *Tangye Jing*), Guang Fen (Luminous Powder, from *Rihua Bencao*), Bai Fen (White Powder, from *Tangye Jing*), Shui Fen (Water Powder, from *Bencao Gangmu*), Guan Fen (Official Powder).
Tao Hongjing stated: This is the Hu Fen made today by processing lead, yet it is called Fen Xi, which contradicts current terminology.
Li Shizhen stated: Lead and tin are of the same category. The ancients called lead "Black Tin" (Hei Xi), hence the name Fen Xi. *Shiming* states: "Hu" sounds like "Hu" (paste), as it was mixed with fat to paste onto the face.
"Ding" and "Wa" refer to its shape; "Guang" and "Bai" refer to its color. Commonly, those from Wu-Yue regions are called Guan Fen; those from Shaozhou are called Shao Fen; those from Chenzhou are called Chen Fen.
**[Correction of Errors]** Su Gong stated: Lead Dan (Lead Tetroxide) and Hu Fen are actually made by roasting tin. Tao's statement that they are made by processing lead is incorrect.
Zhu Zhenheng stated: Hu Fen is tin powder, not lead powder. The ancients used tin powder, which women applied to their faces because its color resembled flesh; it should not be used medicinally.
Su Song stated: Both Fen Xi and Huang Dan are made by processing lead. Li Ji, Duke of Ying, said in his preface that "lead and tin are indistinguishable," referring to this. According to Li Hanguang's *Yinyi*: Huang Dan and Hu Fen are both made by processing lead; there is no record of using tin. *Cantong Qi* states: "When Hu Fen is thrown into charcoal, its color is destroyed, and it returns to lead." *Baopuzi · Inner Chapters* states: "Foolish people do not believe that Huang Dan and Hu Fen are made by processing lead." Su Gong's claim that both are made by roasting tin is a major error.
Li Shizhen stated: Roasted tin turns into black ash; how could it become white powder? Su Gong was already wrong, and Zhu Zhenheng followed his error. Why?
**[Collection and Explanation]** Li Shizhen stated: According to *Mozi*, Yu the Great created powder. Zhang Hua's *Bowuzhi* states: King Zhou of Shang burned lead and tin to make powder. Thus, the origin of powder is ancient. Currently, Jinling, Hangzhou, Shaozhou, and Chenzhou all produce it, with Chen Fen being the most authentic, having a bluish tint. Locals describe the manufacturing method: For every 100 jin of lead, melt it, shave it into thin sheets, roll them into cylinders, and place them inside a wooden steamer (Zeng). Place one bottle of vinegar below and one inside the steamer. Seal the exterior with salt mud and paper. Place four liang of fire in a wind furnace and maintain for seven days. Then sweep the contents into a water vat, reseal, and maintain. Repeat until the lead is exhausted. The unreacted lead is kept and roasted to make Huang Dan. For every jin of powder obtained, add two liang of bean flour and four liang of clam flour, mix evenly in water, and let settle to remove clear water. Make trenches with fine ash, place several layers of paper on top, put the powder on the paper. When nearly dry, cut into tile-shaped blocks. Wait for drying and store. Fan Chengda's *Yuheng Zhi* states: Lead powder produced in Guilin is most famous, called Gui Fen. It is made by placing black lead in a jar of wine lees to ferment and transform. He Mengchun's *Yudong Lu* states: Songyang produces lead, and residents often make Hu Fen. The method is: suspend lead blocks in a wine jar, seal for forty-nine days, and upon opening, it has transformed into powder. The parts that did not turn white are roasted into Huang Dan. The dregs of Huang Dan become Mituo Seng (Litharge). These three items yield great profit. However, lead vapor is toxic. Workers must eat fatty pork or dog meat, drink alcohol, and consume iron slurry to suppress the toxicity. Inhaling the vapor on an empty stomach causes illness and death. Children and adults exposed to the vapor often die from atrophy, jaundice, paralysis, and spasms. These methods differ slightly, likely because skilled craftsmers innovate to accelerate transformation for profit. This also reveals the fallacy of the ancients' claim about roasting tin. *Xianggan Zhi* states: Shao Fen does not turn white when steamed directly, but turns white when steamed in a radon jar.
**[Flavor and Properties]** Pungent, Cold, Non-toxic. Lei Xiao stated: Sweet, Pungent, Cool.
Li Shizhen stated: Hu Fen can restrain Sulfur. Additionally, Realgar loses its color when meeting Hu Fen, and Hu Fen turns black when meeting Realgar, indicating mutual aversion (pharmacological antagonism). Furthermore, adding Hu Fen to wine removes acidity, and it prevents sand from entering crabs during capture.
**[Indications]** Treats poisoning from hidden corpse toxins and insect stings; kills three types of parasites (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Removes abdominal masses (Nie Xia), treats malignant sores, stops frequent urination, induces abortion (from *Mingyi Bielu*). Treats accumulation that does not dissipate. Charred, it treats infantile malnutrition dysentery (Zhen Quan). Treats carbuncles and ulcers, vomiting and regurgitation, abdominal masses, and infantile malnutrition qi (Chen Cangqi). Stops diarrhea and dysentery, chronic accumulated dysentery (Kou Zongshi). Treats relapse due to diet or fatigue, descends phlegm and reduces distension, treats tinea and fox odor, darkens beard and hair (Li Shizhen).
**[Elucidation]** Tao Hongjing stated: Golden-colored Hu Fen is best for treating corpse worms.
Sun Simiao stated: For chronic dysentery leading to malnutrition, take Hu Fen mixed with water and egg white. Stop when stool turns black, as it kills parasites and stops dysentery.
Li Shizhen stated: Hu Fen is lead transformed from black to white. Although its nature and use are similar to lead and Huang Dan, it lacks the property of nitrate/salt burning. It contains mixed bean flour and clam flour, entering only the Qi level, not the Blood level, which is a slight difference. After human ingestion, if stool turns black, this is returning to its original essence, as stated: "color destroyed, returns to lead." It can also be used in plasters instead of Huang Dan.
