(Song Dynasty *Tu Jing Ben Cao*)
[Collected Explanations] Song said: It grows in Shizhou. The seedling is about one chi high, with purple backs on the leaves and no flowers. Local people harvest the roots for use.
Shizhen said: It is found everywhere in the waterside rocky areas of Huxiang, named Jinpan Teng (Golden Plate Vine). It resembles Cu Tong Cao (Vinegar Tube Herb) but has smaller leaves with slightly purple backs. The soft stems creep like Huang Si (Yellow Silk), breaking upon rubbing without visible juice. Alchemists use it to refine mercury. It is rare in other places. Cu Tong Cao: Leaves resemble those of Hibiscus mutabilis (Cotton Rose) but are asymmetrical; stems are hollow and brittle, taste sour, and produce white flowers. People in Guangdong pickle and eat them with salt and vinegar.
[Flavor and Properties] Pungent, astringent, hot, non-toxic.
[Indications] For women's blood and qi pain, wash, bake, grind into powder, and take half qian with wine. Pregnant women should not take it, as it can dissipate fetal qi. Avoid chicken, fish, sheep blood, and wet dough (Su Song).
(*Ben Cao Gang Mu*)
[Collected Explanations] Shizhen said: Liu Songshi's *Baoshou Tang Fang* states: Bailong Xu (White Dragon Whisker) grows near water beside rocks, parasitizing the nodes of Soufeng Tree, being the residual essence of the tree. It is fine like palm fibers, growing straight up without branches or leaves, making true specimens very hard to obtain. There is a Wan Chan Cao (Ten Thousand Wrapping Grass) that grows at the roots of Baixian Tree, similar in fine threads but distinguished by having branches and stems, being slightly thicker. Misuse is ineffective. My research indicates: The names of these two trees mentioned are all cryptic terms, making verification impossible.
[Flavor and Properties] Lacking "Ping" (Neutral), non-toxic.
[Indications] For wind-dampness causing waist and leg pain in men and women, left hemiplegia and right paralysis, facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes), and postpartum scattering of blood and qi, tibia pain, dim vision, and unbearable waist and leg pain, this is suitable. Only cases of deficiency consumption leading to paralysis and flaccidity should not take it. Grind into powder, take 1 qian per dose, or 0.7 qian for those with weak qi, taken down with ashless wine. Lie in a sealed room, lying on either side against the bed, waiting for sweat to dry naturally. Do not cover with too many blankets, and do not get out of bed to see wind for three days. Another method: For mild disease, use 3 qian of powder, boil one pot of wine in a porcelain bottle. Each day, first drink a little Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction), then drink two cups of wine. Take once in the morning and once in the evening (*Baoshou Tang Fang*).
[Elucidation] Shizhen said: *Baoshou Fang* records: In the 12th year of Chenghua, Daoist Lu Xuanzhen, aged 67, suddenly suffered from paralysis in June. After taking Baihua She Wan (White Flower Snake Pill), all his teeth fell out. Three years later, he entered the mountains while ill, obtained this prescription, took it for 100 days, recovered completely, and lived to be 100 years old before passing away. For any man or woman with wind-dampness waist and leg pain, first take Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) and Shen Shi Tang (Dampness Percolating Decoction), then take this. For women with postpartum waist and leg swelling and pain, first take Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) twice, then take this the next day. If paralysis has lasted for years, with old phlegm and weak qi, after sweating from taking the previous medicines, start taking 1 fen of Long Xu (Dragon Whisker) powder daily with good wine after three days. Every other day increase to 2 fen, then 3 fen, then 4 fen, then 5 fen. After another interval, return to 1 fen and repeat the cycle. After more than a month, the illness gradually heals. This is called raising yang and descending qi, regulating marrow and steaming bone, pursuing wind and driving out evil, expelling blood and calming spirit. Avoid sexual intercourse, fish, goose, chicken, sheep, leeks, garlic, shrimp, crab, and cold foods that stir wind. Also avoid excessive alcohol and wheat products; only rice porridge and vegetables are suitable.
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Various wind-induced paralysis with loose tendons and bones: Use 1 liang of root bark of Bailong Xu, 7 fen of Yaoyang Hua (Alkekengi officinarum var. franchetii / Tiger Flower), and 3 jin of good distilled liquor. Seal tightly, boil for the time it takes to burn one incense stick, bury in the earth overnight. Those who can drink take three cups; those who cannot take one cup, taken at bedtime. Taking three to five cups will show effects. Cases where pain sensation remains are treatable. (Tanxian *Jie Xiao Fang*)
