(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Names] Yanlü (Salt Green), Shilü (Stone Green) (from *Bencao Gangmu*).
[Collection and Explanation] Su Gong stated: Lüyan (Green Salt) is produced in Yanqi. It is collected from under stones in water, resembling Bianqing (Blue Malachite) and Kongqing (Hollow Blue), and is a crucial medicine for eye diseases. Nowadays, people use Guangmingyan (Bright Salt), Sha (Sand/Mineral), and Chitongxue (Red Copper Filings), brewing them into blocks that are green in color to pass off as the genuine article.
Chen Cangqi stated: It originates from the Kingdom of Persia, grows on rocks, and is brought over by ships, called Shilü (Stone Green). As a pigment, it remains unchanged for a long time. In China, those made from copper and vinegar can be used as medicine, but their color does not last long.
Li Shizhen stated: Practitioners say that Persian Lüyan (Green Salt) with a bluish-green color, which dries without becoming damp during cloudy or rainy weather, is genuine. Another method to create Yanlü (Salt Green) is: take one sheng of Jiangshui (fermented grain wash) in a clean copper vessel, add one liang of Qingyan (Green Rock Salt), soak for seven days, then remove; it will turn green. Scrape it into powder, immerse it again in Jiangshui for seven days or fourteen days, then remove. This is not true Lüyan (Green Salt).
[Flavor and Properties] Salty, bitter, acrid; neutral in nature; non-toxic.
[Indications] Red eyes with tearing, skin nebulas, and dark eye discharge (from *Tang Bencao*). Applied to the eyes to brighten vision and eliminate nebulas. Treats infant Wugu Ganqi (Innocent Childhood Malnutrition/Gan Syndrome) (from Li Xun's works).
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Fetal Redness and Eye Pain: One fen of Yanlü (Salt Green) and half a liang of honey. Mix together inside a clam shell. Every night before sleep, wash the eyes with Jiangshui (fermented grain wash), heat gently, and apply. This can cure the root cause. (*Shengji Lu*)
Dim Vision, Redness, Dryness, and Excessive Tearing: One qian of Yanlü (Salt Green) and one qian of Ruiren (Buckthorn Seed, peeled). Grind until hot, add one qian of high-quality butter (Su), and grind evenly. Apply an amount the size of a sesame seed every night. (*Shenghui Fang*)
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Collection and Explanation] Chen Cangqi stated: It is found in the valleys of Leizhou and Luozhou in the southwest of the sea. It resembles Mangxiao (Mirabilite), has fine powder, and feels extremely cold upon entry into the mouth. People in the south rarely consume it, fearing that the extreme cold may damage the abdomen when ingested; caution is advised.
[Flavor and Properties] Salty; cold in nature; non-toxic.
[Indications] For red and ulcerated eyes or wind-induced red eyes, grind finely, mix with water, and apply to the eyes. Also, grind with water and ingest internally to relieve heat, irritability, phlegm distension, chest fullness, and headache; it brightens the eyes and calms the heart spirit. It also treats venom from snakes, scorpions, and other evil insects, poison arrowheads, scabies, tinea, carbuncles, and scrofula; apply externally by rubbing and compressing. For severe cases, dissolve in water and ingest. It also detoxifies the poison of Duzijiao Cao (Solea Grass) arrow poison (Chen Cangqi).
[Appendix] Xuanshi (Hanging Stone)
Su Baosheng stated: If a person frequently consumes refined stones, after death, "Xuanshi" (Hanging Stones) will form in their grave. They resemble Mangxiao (Mirabilite), are as cold as snow, and can neutralize fire toxicity.
