【集解】禹锡曰∶罗勒处处有之。有三种∶一种似紫苏叶;一种叶大,二十步内即闻香;
(Appendix from the Song Dynasty's *Jiayu Bencao*)
[Names] Lanxiang (from *Jiayu Bencao*), Xiangcai (from *Bencao Gangmu*), Yizicao.
Yuxi stated: People in the North, to avoid the taboo of Shi Le's name, called Luo Le "Lanxiang".
Shizhen stated: According to *Ye Zhong Ji*: Shi Hu avoided saying the character "Le", changing the name of Luo Le to Xiangcai. Currently, common people call it Yizicao, because its seeds are used to treat eye cataracts (pterygium).
[Collection and Explanation] Yuxi stated: Luo Le grows everywhere. There are three types: one has leaves resembling Perilla frutescens; one has large leaves, emitting fragrance within twenty paces; one can be eaten as a raw vegetable. In winter, the dried plant is used. The seeds can be placed in the eyes to remove cataracts; after a short while, they swell with moisture and discharge along with foreign objects.
Shizhen stated: To grow Xiangcai, it must be sown in March when jujube leaves emerge, otherwise it will not sprout. Watering frequently with fishy water, rice washing water, or ditch water makes it fragrant and lush. It should not be watered with manure water. KT Xian in *Shenyin Shu* said: It is suitable to plant extensively near water by the garden side; it can also be used for relief during famine years. Its seeds are as large as fleas, brown and not shiny, harvested in July.
Hongjing stated: Daoist practitioners take sheep horns and horse hooves, burn them to ash, scatter on wet ground, and trample repeatedly, which causes Luo Le to grow. Common people call it Xi Wangmu Cai; eating it benefits the human body.
[Flavor and Properties] Pungent, Warm, slightly toxic.
Yuxi stated: It should not be consumed in excess, as it obstructs joints, stagnates Ying and Wei Qi, prevents blood vessels from flowing smoothly, stirs wind, and triggers gout (Hong Kong foot).
[Indications] Regulates the Middle Jiao and promotes digestion, eliminates foul odors, resolves dampness, and is suitable for raw consumption. Treats rotting ulcers at the tooth roots; using it as ash is very effective. For those suffering from vomiting, take the juice and consume half a he; in winter, use the dried herb boiled in water. Burn the root to ash and apply to treat yellow, weeping sores in children (Yuxi). Mainly used to ward off Flying Corpse, Ghost Tendency, and Gu Poison (Wu Rui).
[Elucidation] Shizhen stated: According to Luo Tianyi: Lanxiang has a pungent flavor and warm nature, capable of harmonizing blood and moistening dryness. Yet Zhang Yuxi says excessive consumption stagnates Ying and Wei Qi and impedes blood flow. Why is this? Furthermore, Li Dongyuan used Lanxiang in Shen Gong Wan to treat toothache and bad breath, stating that if unavailable, Huoxiang can substitute, merely taking advantage of its ability to eliminate foul odors. Thus, *Yinshan Zhengyao* states: When eaten with various vegetables, its pungent fragrance wards off fishy smells, all sharing this intent.
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Nasal Gan Red Ulceration: Lanxiang leaves (burned to ash) 2 qian, Tongqing 5 fen, Qingfen [Light Powder], ground into powder, applied three times daily. (Qian Yi *Xiao'er Fang*).
Regurgitation and Belching: Fresh ginger 4 liang (mashed), add Lanxiang leaves 1 liang, pepper powder 1 qian, salt and flour 4 liang, wrap to make baked cakes, bake thoroughly, eat on an empty stomach. Effective within two or three doses. For regurgitation, mix with sugarcane juice. (*Puji Fang*).
[Seeds Indications] Eye cataracts and dust entering the eye: Place three to five seeds in the eye; after a short while, they should swell with moisture and discharge along with the object.
Also treats wind-induced red eyes with excessive tearing (*Jiayu Bencao*).
[Elucidation of Seeds]
Shizhen stated: According to *Puji Fang*: Previously, Peng Dabian, Recorder of Luzhou, was in Lin'an when he suddenly developed red eyes followed by cataracts. A physician washed and sun-dried Lanxiang seeds, inserting one grain into the eye each time, closing the eyes briefly, causing the membrane to come out with it. Another method: grind into powder and instill. Shizhen often tested the seeds in water, and they also swelled. This is because these seeds swell upon contact with water, thus attracting and lifting away eye discharge and floating membranes. However, no dust should enter the eye, yet placing three to five of these seeds is unobstructed, which is a unique characteristic.
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Blurred Vision with Floating Cataracts: Use seven Lanxiang seeds each time, decoct in water and take before sleep; long-term use is effective. (*Haishang Mingfang*).
Gangrenous Stomatitis (Zouma Ya Gan): Children consuming rich and sweet foods cause the Kidney to suffer from deficiency heat, resulting in foul breath, teeth turning black sequentially (named Bengsha); progressing to gum ulceration (named Kuicao); or bleeding (named Xuanlu); severely leading to tooth loss (named Fugen). Use Lanxiang seed powder and Qingfen each 1 qian, Miduoseng (calcined with vinegar and ground) 0.5 liang, mix evenly. Apply a small amount to teeth and gums each time for immediate effect. Internally administer Ganlu Yin. (*Huoyou Kouyi*)
