(Mirroring the pronunciation "Mei". Listed as a Superior Grade herb in *Shennong Bencao Jing* [Divine Farmer's Materia Medica]).
[Names] Qiangwei (Rose) (from *Bielu* [Additional Records]), Shanji (Mountain Thorn), Cihua (Thorny Flower) (from *Gangmu* [Compendium]).
Li Shizhen states: This plant has soft, creeping vines that grow by leaning on walls or other supports, hence the name Qiangmi. Its stems are covered with thorns that scratch people; cattle like to eat it, hence the names Shanji and Niule. Its fruits grow in clusters, resembling the Ying Star (a constellation), hence called Yingshi.
[Collection & Explanation] *Bielu* states: Yingshi grows in the valleys of Lingling and Shujun. It is harvested in August and September and dried in the shade.
Tao Hongjing states: Yingshi is the seed of Qiangwei (Rose); those with white flowers are superior. The stems and leaves can be boiled for drinking, and the roots can be used to brew wine.
Su Baosheng states: It is found everywhere. It grows as a vine with many thorns on the stems. The flowers have multiple petals (some double-flowered, some six or eight-petaled), and are either red or white. The fruit resembles that of Dutangzi (a type of crabapple).
Li Shizhen states: Wild Qiangwei grows in forests and ditches. In spring, tender shoots emerge; children pinch off the skin and thorns to eat them. As they mature, they form clumps similar to vines, but the stems become hard and thorny. The small leaves are pointed, thin, and have fine teeth. Flowers bloom in April and May, with four petals, yellow centers, appearing in white or pink varieties. Fruits grow in clusters, turning from green to red when ripe. The seeds have white hairs, resembling those of Jinyingzi (Cherokee Rose Hip), and are harvested in August. Roots can be harvested at any time. Cultivated varieties for ornamental purposes have thick stems and large leaves, extending several zhang long. Their flowers are also larger and richer in color, including white, yellow, red, and purple. The largest flowers are named "Fojianxiao" (Buddha Smiles), and the smaller ones "Muxiang" (Wood Fragrance); both are fragrant and beautiful but are not used medicinally. In the Southern Regions, there is "Qiangweilu" (Rose Water), said to be the dew from these flowers, exceptionally fragrant.
Yingshi (Rosa Laevigata Fruit / Cherokee Rose Fruit)

[Elucidation] Li Shizhen states: Yingshi and Qiangwei root enter the Yangming Meridian, clear wind-heat and damp-heat, regenerate flesh, and kill parasites. Therefore, they are commonly used in ancient prescriptions for carbuncles, sores, and tinea. Dysentery, thirst (Xiaoke), enuresis, and excessive sleepiness are all diseases of the Yangming Meridian.
