(Pronounced "Bian", recorded in the Middle Category of *Bie Lu*)
**[Names]** Yanli Dou (common name), Emmei Dou.
Li Shizhen said: It was originally written as "Bian" because the pod shape is flat. "Yanli" refers to its creeping growth habit. "Emmei" describes the shape of the white ridge on the bean, resembling a moth's eyebrow.
**[Collection and Explanation]** Tao Hongjing said: People plant Bian Dou along fences and walls; its pods are very delicious when steamed.
Su Song said: The vines creep upwards, with large leaves and small flowers. The flowers are either purple or white, and the pods grow beneath the flowers. There are two kinds of fruits: black and white. The white ones are warm in nature, while the black ones are slightly cold. The white variety is used for medicinal purposes. The black one is called Que Dou (Magpie Bean), likely because it has white streaks amidst the black color, resembling magpie feathers.
Li Shizhen said: Bian Dou is sown in February and grows as a climbing vine. The leaves are as large as a cup, round with pointed tips. The flowers resemble small moths, with wing-like tails. There are over ten varieties of pods, varying in length and shape—some like dragon claws, tiger claws, pig ears, or sickles—all growing in clusters along the branches. After the White Dew solar term, the fruits become more abundant. When tender, they can be eaten as vegetables or tea ingredients; when mature, the seeds are harvested and boiled. The seeds come in four colors: black, white, red, and spotted. One variety has hard pods that are inedible. Only the coarse, round, white beans are suitable for medicinal use. The Materia Medica does not distinguish between them, which is an omission in the text.
**White Flat Bean (Bai Bian Dou)**
**[Processing]** Li Shizhen said: For medicinal use, select the seeds from hard-shelled flat beans, stir-fry them with the skin until cooked, and then use them. Some methods involve soaking in water to remove the skin or using them raw, depending on the specific prescription.
**[Flavor and Properties]** Sweet, slightly warm, non-toxic.
Meng Shen said: Slightly cold; those with cold syndromes should avoid eating it.
Tao Hongjing said: Those suffering from alternating chills and fever should not eat it.
**[Indications]** Harmonizes the middle jiao, directs qi downward (*Bie Lu*). Tonifies the five zang organs, treats vomiting and reflux. Long-term consumption prevents graying of the hair (Meng Shen). Treats persistent vomiting and diarrhea caused by Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome); grind into powder and take with vinegar (ibid.). Disperses wind-qi, treats leukorrhea in women, resolves alcohol toxicity and pufferfish poisoning (Su Song). Resolves all vegetable and herb toxins; chew raw or drink the decoction for efficacy (Zhen Quan). Stops dysentery, clears summerheat, warms the spleen and stomach, removes dampness-heat, and stops polydipsia (Li Shizhen).
**[Elucidation]** Li Shizhen said: The hard-shelled white flat bean has plump seeds, white with a slight yellow tint, smelling fishy and fragrant. Its nature is warm and neutral, attaining the balance of the middle, making it the grain of the spleen. It enters the Taiyin qi level, unblocks and benefits the Sanjiao, transforms clear yang and descends turbid yin. Therefore, it specifically treats diseases of the Middle Jiao, resolving summerheat, removing dampness, and detoxifying. The soft-shelled and black-magpie-colored beans have a slightly cool nature and are primarily for food, though they also regulate the spleen and stomach.
**[Prescriptions]** Nine new prescriptions.
Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea: Bian Dou and Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba) each 1 sheng, water 6 sheng, boil to obtain 2 sheng, divide and take (from *Qian Jin Fang*).

Mash with water and drink to resolve fatal drug poisoning. Efficacy is similar to the bean itself (Li Shizhen).
**[Prescriptions]** Two new prescriptions.

Mash and apply externally for snake bites (Da Ming).
**Vine**
**[Indications]** Huoluan, decocted in equal parts with Lu Gen (Reed Rhizome), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), and Cang Mi (aged rice) (Li Shizhen).
