[Names] Chi Mu Chong (Vinegar Bean Mother Insect).
[Collected Explanations]
Li Shizhen states: Chen Zangqi's *Bencao Shayi* mentions Chi Chong but does not specify its origin or shape. According to Ge Hong's *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* [Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve]: In the Jiangnan region, there is a water insect called "She Gong" [Shooting Arrow Insect]. If bitten by it, sores appear on the body. Taking one Chi Mu Chong floating on the water surface and holding it in the mouth cures the condition; even if the patient is dead, they can be revived. This insect is jet black, the size of a soybean, and floats on the water. Currently, there is a water insect, large as a bean, smooth and black, which is this one. It is named Chi Mu because its shape resembles a bean.
[Properties and Flavor] Toxic.
[Indications] Kills birds and beasts, erodes polyps, and is applied externally for malignant ulcers (from Chen Zangqi).
(From *Bencao Shayi*)
[Names] Dao Xing Gou Zi [Inverted-Walking Dog Insect] (from *Bencao Shayi*), Shui Chong [Sleeping Insect] (ibid).
[Collected Explanations]
Chen Zangqi says: They are found everywhere. They live among sand and stones, creating spiral holes. They are the size of a soybean, have spines on their backs, and can walk backward. Their nature is to love sleep, hence also called Shui Chong.
[Properties and Flavor] Toxic.
[Indications] Freshly collected and placed in a pillow, it promotes harmony between husband and wife. When combined with She Wang [Aconite Poison], it kills flying birds and running beasts. (Text cuts off here)
(From *Bencao Shayi*)
[Names] Hui [Roundworm] (pronounced "Hui". Commonly known as...)
[Collected Explanations]
Li Shizhen says: Hui Chong [Ascaris lumbricoides/Roundworm] is a long worm living in the human abdomen. According to Chao Yuanfang's *Bingyuan* [General Treatise on Diseases and Etiologies]: There are nine types of worms in the human abdomen: Fu Chong [Hidden Worm] is four fen long and is the leader of the group worms; Bai Chong [White Worm] is one cun long; if numerous, they become inch-long white worms, causing mental restlessness; Fei Chong [Lung Worm] resembles a silkworm, causes coughing, and leads to consumption (lao disease) and death if severe; Wei Chong [Stomach Worm] resembles a toad, causes vomiting and hiccups; Ruo Chong [Weak Worm], also called Ge Chong [Diaphragm Worm], resembles melon seeds, causes excessive salivation; Chi Chong [Red Worm] resembles raw meat, causes borborygmus (intestinal rumbling); Nao Chong [Pinworm] is extremely minute, shaped like a vegetable worm, resides in the large intestine, and causes abscesses, scabies, leprosy, hemorrhoids, and gan syndrome; Shi Chong [Corpse Worm] is thin as sinew, dwells attached to the spleen, about three cun long, with a head and tail. Whenever taking tonic medicines, these worms must be removed first; otherwise, the medicinal efficacy will not be achieved. All kinds of zheng jia [masses and accumulations] eventually transform into worms over time. Zhi Ting Zhen Ren [True Person Zhi Ting] said: Among the nine worms, six types transmit and transform into lao zhai [consumptive tuberculosis-like diseases], while the stomach and diaphragm worms transmit and transform, appearing variously like infants, ghosts, toads, geckos, centipedes, mole crickets, bats, shrimp, pig liver, blood juice, tangled hair, or tangled silk. Any worm in the abdomen moves downward from the upper part. Medication should be taken at the wu geng [3-5 AM] time on the 4th or 5th day of the lunar month for better efficacy. Zhang Zihe said: The transformations described by Chao Yuanfang are countless, but essentially all are dominated by damp-heat. Worms arise from Wood qi and transform with Rain qi. Is this not because Wind-Wood governs heat and Rain/Dew governs dampness? Therefore, worms exist within all five elements. Trees have borers, fruits have grubs, legumes have weevils, grains have caterpillars and beetles; wheat rots and moths fly, chestnuts crack and worms emerge, grass decays and fireflies hatch—all are insects of Wood. Fierce fires produce mice, rotting ash breeds flies—all are insects of Fire. Ants in burrows, scorpions on walls, mole crickets in fields, lizards on stones—all are insects of Earth. Tadpoles, horse leeches, fish, turtles, dragons—all are insects of Water. Once, a smith broke a cauldron and saw that in the broken section, inside a mortar, there was a worm like a rice worm...
