(Recorded in the Lower Category of *Bie Lu*)
[Names] Li Shizhen stated: The crossbow was first invented by the Yellow Emperor. Liu Xi, in his work *Shi Ming*, explained: "Nu" (crossbow) derives from "Nu" (anger/fury), indicating its rapid and forceful momentum. The handle is called the "Bi" (arm), resembling a human arm. The hook that draws the string is called the "Ya" (tooth), resembling human teeth. The part outside the tooth is called the "Guo" (frame). The lower part is called the "Xuandao" (hanging knife). Collectively, these parts are named the "Ji" (mechanism). Su Song stated: Medicinal copper crossbow teeth are used because they contain tin.
[Properties and Flavor] Neutral in nature, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Dystocia in women, blood stasis with amenorrhea, obstruction of menstruation, and blockage between Yin and Yang qi mechanisms (*Bie Lu*).
[Elucidation] Tao Hongjing stated: Copper crossbow teeth can treat various ailments; burning them red and immersing them in wine to drink the liquid was considered a superior method by the ancients. Liu Wansu stated: Crossbow teeth facilitate rapid childbirth because the mechanism releases without restraint, utilizing its inherent function for therapeutic effect.
[Prescriptions] One old prescription. For swallowing pearl coins or money causing choking in the throat: Burn a copper crossbow tooth until red, immerse it in water, and drink the cooled liquid for immediate relief (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
(The following content is from *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Properties and Flavor] Toxic.
Li Shizhen stated: Storing food, drinks, tea, or wine in copper vessels overnight generates toxicity. Decocting and drinking such water damages the voice.
Meng Shen stated: Sweat residues on copper vessels are toxic and can cause severe sores and internal abscesses.
[Indications] Muscle spasms (Zhuanjin) due to Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome), and Zhitong (wandering pain) in the kidney region and below the umbilicus; apply heat using a hot copper vessel through clothing to moxa-iron the abdomen and kidney area (*Rihua Zi Bencao*). Keeping ancient bronze vessels can ward off evil influences (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: Zhao Xigu, in *Dongtian Lu*, noted that mountain spirits and water demons often exist for long periods, thus capable of causing harm. Bronze vessels like bells, tripods, and ritual vessels from the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties have existed even longer, hence their ability to dispel evil influences.
Copper Iron (also written as "Gu", meaning ironing tool)
[Indications] Fractures from trauma: Crush into powder, refine by flying (levigation), mix with a small amount of wine, and take orally. Do not exceed one Fangcunbi (a square-inch measure). Alternatively, fill with hot ashes and use to iron cold pain in the abdomen and umbilical region (Li Shizhen).
Copper Scale Weight
[Indications] Breech presentation or difficult labor: Heat until red, quench in wine, and drink the wine (*Rihua Zi Bencao*).
Copper Spoon Handle
[Indications] Wind-eye redness and ulceration, as well as wind-heat induced pterygium or corneal opacity in red eyes: Heat until red and cauterize the affected area. Frequent application yields excellent results (Li Shizhen).
