[Shanzhuyu / Corni Fructus]
The Qi is neutral. The Flavor is sour. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats alternating cold and heat caused by pathogenic factors in the epigastrium (heart below). It warms the Middle Jiao, expels cold-dampness bi-syndrome, and eliminates three types of parasites. Long-term consumption makes the body feel light. (Remove the pit before use.)
Corni Fructus has a neutral Qi, inheriting the Metal Qi of autumn's maturity, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sour flavor, being non-toxic, obtains the Wood flavor of the East, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Both its Qi and Flavor descend, belonging to Yin. The epigastrium corresponds to the Spleen's region. Pathogens in the Spleen are also pathogens of Liver Wood. If Liver Wood suffers from blood deficiency with hyperactive Qi, it overacts on Spleen Earth. When merging with Yang, it manifests as heat; when merging with Yin, it manifests as cold. Corni Fructus enters the Liver due to its sour flavor, nourishing Liver Blood and astringing Liver Qi, thereby naturally eliminating the cold and heat in the epigastrium. Due to its sour astringent nature, Corni Fructus draws fire down to the Lower Jiao. Fire located in the lower part is called "Shaohuo" (Ministerial Fire), which generates Qi, thus warming the Middle Jiao. Its neutral Qi benefits the Lung; the Lung governs the skin and hair and regulates water passages. When water passages are unobstructed and regulated, the skin and hair become smooth, and cold-dampness bi-syndrome heals. The "three parasites" are transformed from damp-heat. As damp-heat descends via the water passages, the parasites are expelled. Long-term consumption leads to an excessive sour flavor, causing Liver Qi to be abundant and moistened. The Liver is the organ of courage, responsible for generating Qi and Blood, hence the body feels light.
Prescription Methods:
Combine Corni Fructus with Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Ostrea Concha (Muli), and Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren) to treat urinary dribbling and enuresis in the elderly. Combine with Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Changpu), Chrysanthemi Flos (Ganju), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) to treat deafness due to Kidney deficiency. Combine with Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Baijiao), and Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) to treat lumbar pain due to Kidney deficiency. Combine with Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Poria (Baifu), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guishen), and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi); this formula is named Zishen Qinggan Yin (Nourish Kidney and Clear Liver Decoction) to treat symptoms of Water Exhaustion and Wood Hyperactivity. Combine with Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong) to treat simultaneous deficiency of Liver and Kidney.
[Bairen / Biota Semen]
The Qi is neutral. The Flavor is sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats palpitations and fright. It benefits Qi, dispels wind-dampness, and calms the Five Zang organs. Long-term consumption gives luster and beauty to the complexion, sharpens hearing and vision, prevents hunger and aging, lightens the body, and prolongs life.
Biota Semen has a neutral Qi, inheriting the peaceful Metal Qi of autumn, entering the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its sweet flavor, being non-toxic, obtains the central Earth flavor of the earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
As a seed kernel, it also enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Its ascending Qi and harmonious Flavor belong to Yang. The Heart is the residence of the Spirit. If Heart Spirit is unsettled, palpitations and fright occur. Biota Semen enters the Heart; for fright, one uses the method of pacification. Its neutral Qi pacifies palpitations. To benefit Qi means that neutral Qi benefits Lung Qi, sweet Flavor benefits Spleen Qi, and moistening benefits Heart Qi. In treating wind disorders, one must first treat the Blood; when Blood moves, Wind extinguishes. Biota Semen's sweet Flavor benefits Spleen Blood; as Blood moves and Wind subsides, the Spleen functions vigorously, and dampness is also driven downward. This is because the Taiyin Meridian is the meridian of Damp-Earth. The Five Zang organs store Yin essence. The Spleen is the source of Yin Qi, the Heart is the organ that generates Blood, and the Lung is the fu-organ of Body Fluids. Biota Semen, being neutral and sweet, benefits Yin. When Yin is sufficient, all Five Zang organs are calm. Long-term consumption of sweet and neutral substances nourishes Blood, giving the face radiance. The Heart is the Sovereign Ruler; if the Ruler is clear, the Twelve Officials are at peace, resulting in acute hearing and vision. Sweet Flavor benefits the Spleen, preventing hunger and aging; neutral Qi benefits the Lung, lightening the body and prolonging life.
Prescription Methods:
Combine Biota Semen with Pine Seed Kernel (Songren) and Hemp Seed (Maren) to treat constipation due to deficiency in the elderly. Combine with Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi), and Date Flesh (Zaorou) made into pills to treat Heart-Spleen deficiency.
