[Epimedium]
The nature is cold. The flavor is acrid. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats impotence and injuries characterized by the exhaustion of Yin and essence. It alleviates pain in the penis, promotes urination, supplements Qi and strength, and stabilizes the will. (Stir-fried with sheep fat)
Epimedium has a cold nature, inheriting the water Qi of winter from heaven, entering the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its acrid flavor and non-toxicity derive from the moistening metal property of earth, entering the Foot-Taiyin Lung Meridian. The descending aspect of its aroma and flavor exceeds the ascending, making it Yin in nature. Yin corresponds to the Zongjin (tendons of the genitalia). If Kidney Water fails to control Fire, excessive Heat causes the tendons to lose their rigidity, resulting in flaccidity. Epimedium enters the Kidney meridian and possesses a cold nature; the coldness is sufficient to restrain Fire, thereby allowing the flaccidity to heal spontaneously. "Exhaustion and injury" refers to the depletion of Yin fluids and damage to essence. The cold nature benefits Water, while the acrid flavor provides moistening; moistening leads to the fullness of Yin essence. The "penis" (Jing) suffers pain due to Fire stagnating internally. Heat is cleared with cold substances, and stagnation is dispersed with acrid substances; thus, it treats pain in the penis. Urine is excreted through Qi transformation. As an acrid-cold substance, it clears and purifies Lung Qi, thereby promoting urination. The Lung governs Qi, and the Kidney regulates Qi. Cold benefits the Kidney, and acrid moistens the Lung; therefore, it supplements Qi and strength. Once Qi and strength are supplemented, they nourish the internal upright and vigorous energy, thereby stabilizing the will, as the Kidney stores the Will (Zhi).
Preparations:
Epimedium soaked in wine treats hemiplegia (Pian Feng). For lower back pain caused by fluid depletion, it is combined with Schisandra Berry (Wuwei Zi) and Raspberry (Fupenzi) in pill form to treat cough involving the Triple Burner. Ground into fine powder and used for rinsing, it treats toothache.
[Morinda Officinalis]
The nature is slightly warm. The flavor is acrid and sweet. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats severe pathogenic wind (Da Feng), impotence with inability to erect, strengthens sinews and bones, calms the Five Zang organs, tonifies the Middle Jiao, enhances the will, and supplements Qi. (Baked with wine)
Morinda Officinalis has a slightly warm nature, inheriting the rising Wood Qi of spring from heaven, entering the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its acrid-sweet flavor and non-toxicity derive from the Metal and Earth flavors of earth, entering the Foot-Yangming Dry-Metal Stomach Meridian. Both its aroma and flavor ascend, making it Yang in nature. Wind Qi communicates with the Liver. Morinda enters the Liver meridian; its acrid and sweet properties disperse, treating severe pathogenic wind by dispersing and draining it. Yin corresponds to the Zongjin. The Zongjin belongs to the Liver. Flaccidity with inability to erect indicates that the Liver has completely lost its motivating Yang. Morinda's warm nature supplements Yang, thus treating this condition. Generally, Morinda treats impotence due to Yang deficiency, whereas Epimedium treats impotence due to Yin deficiency. The Liver governs sinews, and the Kidney governs bones. Acrid-warm properties benefit the Liver and Kidney, thus strengthening sinews and bones. The Stomach is the source of the Five Zang organs and the head of the Twelve Meridians. Acrid-sweet flavors enter the Stomach, and warmth assists Stomach Yang, thereby calming all Five Zang organs. The Stomach represents Central Earth; when Earth is warm, the Middle Jiao is naturally tonified. The Kidney regulates Qi and stores the Will. Morinda's warm nature benefits Liver Qi. The Liver is associated with courage (Gan). If Liver Qi is not deficient, it does not deplete Kidney Qi, thereby increasing the Will and Qi.
Preparations:
Morinda Officinalis combined with Schisandra Berry, Cistanche, Cornus Fruit, Deer Antler, Biota Seed, Goji Berry, and Psoralea Fruit treats impotence. Combined with Deer Horn, Biota Seed, Ophiopogon Root, Polygala Root, Lotus Stamen, Raspberry, and Phellodendron Bark, it treats nocturnal emissions and seminal leakage associated with dreams of sexual intercourse with spirits. Combined with Prepared Rhubarb, it treats foot conditions in individuals who consume alcohol.
