[Oyster Shell]
The qi is neutral and slightly cold. The taste is salty. It is non-toxic. It primarily treats shaoyang disease (cold damage), alternating chills and fever, the shivering sensation of warm malaria (wen nue), fright, anger, and resentment. It eliminates stiffness and flaccidity, and scrofula (lymph node tuberculosis). For women, it treats red and white leukorrhea. Long-term use strengthens the bones and joints, expels evil spirits, and prolongs life. (Prepared by sealing with salt mud and calcining)
Oyster shell has a neutral and slightly cold qi, inheriting the metal and water energies of autumn and winter from heaven. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Its taste is salty and non-toxic, deriving from the water flavor of the north. It enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Both its qi and taste are descending, belonging to Yin. If one fails to store essence during winter, causing kidney water to dry up and fire to flare up, when spring arrives and wood and fire intertwine fiercely, shaoyang disease and heat diseases occur. The pathology lies in the Foot-Taiyang Water meridian, hence the alternating chills and fever. Oyster shell treats this because its salty and cold nature enters the Taiyang meridian, strengthening water to clear fire. Summer injury by heat results in fever without chills, termed warm malaria. Warm malaria involves yin deficiency; yin is the guardian within. When the guardian is deficient, one feels shivering. Oyster shell treats this because its salty and cold nature dissipates summer heat, and its neutral qi enters the Lung; lung qi being balanced is sufficient to control malaria pathogens. Liver deficiency leads to fright; liver excess leads to anger and resentment. Fright is calmed by neutrality; anger is descended. Neutral qi descends, as Metal controls Wood. Salty taste softens hardness; neutral and cold nature eliminates stiffness and flaccidity. Thus, it treats scrofula. Damp-heat pouring downward into the Kidney causes leukorrhea in women. Oyster shell’s neutral and cold nature clears damp-heat, thus treating it. Long-term use strengthens bones and joints due to the benefit of salty-neutral properties to Lung and Kidney. Expelling evil spirits relies on the power of cold qi to clear and purify heat pathogens. Prolonging life relies on the complete function of astringing and preserving essence and qi.
Formulation:
Oyster shell combined with Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Cinnamon Twig (Gui Zhi), White Peony Root (Bai Shao), Licorice Root (Gan Cao), Ginger (Sheng Jiang), and Jujube (Da Zao) treats nocturnal emission. Combined with Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin) and Ephedra Root Hair (Mahuang Gen), it treats night sweats. Combined with Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen), ground into powder, kneaded into a ball with rice vinegar, then ground again, mixed with mugwort powder using rice vinegar to make an ointment pill, taken with vinegar decoction, it treats menorrhagia or prolonged menstruation.
[Human Milk]
The qi is neutral. The taste is sweet and salty. It is non-toxic. It primarily tonifies the five zang organs, making the body plump, skin fair, and lustrous.
Human milk has a neutral qi, inheriting the balanced metal energy of autumn from heaven. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its taste is sweet and salty and non-toxic, deriving from the central earth and water flavors. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its qi and taste descend more than they ascend, belonging to Yin. The Lung governs the qi of the whole body; the Spleen unifies the blood of the whole body; the Kidney stores the essence of the whole body. Human milk is transformed from blood and enters the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney meridians, tonifying essence, qi, and blood. Therefore, all five zang organs benefit, resulting in a plump body, fair complexion, and luster.
Formulation:
Human milk combined with Pear Juice, named Jie Ming Dan (Life-Receiving Pill), treats qi and blood deficiency. Combined with Achyranthes Root (Niu Xi), Eucommia Bark (Du Zhong), Psoralea Fruit (Bu Gu Zhi), Poria (Fu Ling), Cow's Milk, and Angelica Sinensis (Dang Gui) to form pills, named Tai Yi Shen Ying Wan, treats deficiency and wasting-thirst conditions.
