[Tieyi (Iron Rind / Calcined Iron)]
Qi is neutral. Flavor is pungent and sweet. Non-toxic. Primarily treats malignant sores, ulcers, carbuncles, and gangrene caused by wind-heat. Also treats scabies and crusts where pathogenic qi resides in the skin. (Stir-fry with vinegar and grind).
Tieyi possesses a neutral Qi, inheriting the descending Metal Qi of autumn from Heaven. It enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Its flavor is pungent and sweet, non-toxic, deriving from the Metal and Earth flavors of the Earth. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian (Dryness-Metal) and Spleen Meridian (Earth). The descending aspect of its Qi and flavor outweighs the ascending. Its nature is heavy, its color black, belonging to Yin. The Liver is the organ of Wind-Wood. Wind-heat sores, carbuncles, scabies, and crusts are symptoms of Liver Fire. The neutral Qi can pacify the Liver; the sweet flavor can alleviate heat, thus it serves as the primary treatment. The skin is the exterior correspondence of the Lung. Pathogenic qi residing in the skin indicates a failure of Qi to consolidate. Tieyi treats this because its neutral Qi can consolidate Qi. The *Suwen* records the use of Tieluo (Fallen Iron) to treat mania. Mania is a disorder of Liver Wood, hence the Metal Qi is taken to control it.
Prescription:
Tieyi combined with Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Danpi (Cortex Moutan), Qizi (Fructus Lycii), Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), and Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae). Treats mania. Combined with Baishao, Beiweizi (Fructus Schisandrae), Paojiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), Qizi, Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi), and Gancao. Treats pediatric convulsions.
[Dansha (Cinnabar)]
Qi is slightly cold. Flavor is sweet. Non-toxic. Primarily treats various diseases of the five viscera and hundred ailments of the body. Nourishes spirit. Calms hun and po. Benefits Qi and brightens the eyes. Expels demons, evil spirits, and malevolent entities. Long-term consumption promotes spiritual clarity and longevity. (Processed by water levigation).
Dansha possesses a slightly cold Qi, inheriting the Cold-Water Qi of early winter from Heaven. It enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Its flavor is sweet, non-toxic, deriving from the central Earth flavor of the Earth. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its red color generates Mercury, entering the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. The Heart is a Fire organ but stores Yin essence. The descending aspect of its Qi and flavor outweighs the ascending. Its texture is heavy and flavor thin, belonging to Yin. The Heart and Kidney are the Water and Fire of the human body. The function of Heaven and Earth lies in Water and Fire. When Water and Fire are harmonious, the position of Heaven and Earth in the human body is established. Dansha, being red and heavy, can anchor Heart Fire; its cold Qi can benefit Kidney Water. Water ascends and Fire descends, Heart and Kidney interact, and diseases of the five viscera are healed. The Heart is the root of life and the dwelling of Shen (Spirit). The Kidney is the source of Qi and the repository of Jing (Essence). When Heart and Kidney interact, Spirit nourishes each other. That which accompanies Shen and moves with it is called Hun (Ethereal Soul). That which exits and enters with Jing is called Po (Corporeal Soul). When Spirit is mutually nourished, Hun and Po naturally calm. Sweet flavor benefits the Spleen. The Spleen is the Post-Heaven foundation. Qi originates from Pre-Heaven Heaven and is filled by grain. Post-Heaven digestion of grain thus benefits Qi. Heart disorders often involve the Liver. If Heart Fire does not flare upward, Liver Blood is offered upwards, thereby brightening the eyes. The red color possesses the Yangming hue of the South. Yangming can repel Yin darkness, thus expelling demons and evil spirits. The reason long-term consumption promotes spiritual clarity and longevity is that the Heart stores Shen Ming (Spiritual Clarity). Long-term consumption of Dansha clears Heart Fire. When Fire is clear, Blood is abundant, resulting in a vacant, spiritual, and unobscured mind, and a radiant complexion.
Prescription:
Dansha 1 liang, combined with Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Fushen, and Gancao each 2 qian, Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Madou (Semen Phaseoli Vulgaris) each 4 qian, Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) each 1 qian, Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) 1 fen. Made into pills. Named Anshen Wan (Calming Spirit Pill). Treats pediatric convulsive disorders. Combined with Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Bai Fu (Poria Cocos - specifically the white part), Gancao, and Chuanlian (Rhizoma Coptidis). Named Zhusha Anshen Wan (Cinnabar Calming Spirit Pill). Has the effect of calming spirit and clearing heat.
