Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats heat in the stomach, panting (asthma), vexation and fullness, relieves thirst, and is taken when ground into fragments the size of hemp seeds or beans. Long-term consumption makes the body light and prolongs life. It grows in Lantian, and can be gathered at any time. (It is incompatible with Lu Jiao [Cervus Cornu].)
The term "Yu Xie" (Jade Fragments) mentioned here refers to jade ground into fragments; it does not refer to a different substance. The *Xian Jing* (Immortal Classic) records taking jade: some methods involve pounding it until it resembles rice grains, then dissolving it with vinegar-like liquids until it becomes mud-like; others combine it into a paste. In all cases of taking jade, one must not use already-made artifacts nor jade uncarved from tombs. High-quality jade comes from Lantian, as well as the territory of Xushanting in Nanyang, waters of Rinnan and Lurong, and foreign regions such as Khotan and Shule, all of which produce excellent jade. The *Xian Fang* (Immortal Formula) calls jade "Xuan Zhen"; true jade is white and clean like lard and rings clearly when struck. There are many similar-looking stones, so careful distinction is required. This is why Yan Shi (swallow stone) was put away in a chest, leading to Bian He's long weeping. (From *Xinxiu Bencao*, p. 3; *Daguan Bencao*, Vol. 3; *Zhenghe Bencao*, p. 81.)
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It treats diseases of the five zang organs and hundred ailments, softens sinews and strengthens bones, calms the hun and po spirits, promotes muscle growth, tonifies qi, benefits the blood vessels, treats twelve types of leukorrhea in women, resolves qi stagnation and strangury, and clarifies the ears and eyes. Long-term consumption enables resistance to cold and heat, eliminates hunger and thirst, leads to immortality as an immortal, makes the body light, and prolongs life. If a person consumes five jin before death, their complexion remains unchanged for three years after death. Also known as "Yu Zha," it grows in the valleys of Lantian and can be gathered at any time. (It fears Kuandonghua [Adenophorae Radix].)
Lantian is located southeast of Chang'an and historically produced beautiful jade; this should be the essence of jade. White jade has a clear and transparent texture and can be dissolved into water, hence the name "Yu Quan" (Jade Spring). People today no longer recognize it precisely, generally just calling it jade. Zhang Hua further stated that for taking jade, one should use white jade from Lantian; regular consumption of this material would lead to becoming an immortal. Someone who consumed five jin before death remained unchanged in color for three years after death. Since ancient times, excavated corpses that appeared alive had large amounts of gold and jade inside and outside their bodies. In Han dynasty regulations, kings and dukes were buried with pearl jackets and jade coffins to ensure imperishability. The method of refining and consuming should follow the jade-taking methods in the *Xian Jing*. Water-ground jade fragments should be used as appropriate. Although its nature is neutral, those who take jade often experience fever, resembling the symptoms after taking Hanshi San (Cold Food Powder). Gold and jade are both heavy treasures of heaven and earth, unlike other stones. If one has not deeply understood the proper dosage and precautions, do not use them lightly. (From *Xinxiu Bencao*, p. 3; *Daguan Bencao*, Vol. 3; *Zhenghe Bencao*, p. 82.)
