The world calls it Purple Shell (Purple Shell), which is indeed slightly different, but also hard to obtain. It is also said to be Abalone Shell (Abalone Shell), growing attached to stones, large ones as big as a hand, shining with five colors, and containing pearls inside. Nowadays, people soak Purple Shells in water and apply them to the eyes for warming, which can somewhat improve vision. This type was originally also mentioned under the entry of Jue Ming (Cassiae Semen), but since the shell belongs to a different category, it is now listed as a secondary item. (Da Guan Vol. 20, Zhenghe p. 415)
Bitter, non-toxic. Mainly treats damp-bi qi (qi stagnation caused by dampness-bi syndrome), heaviness of the body, and immobility of the four limbs and joints. Grows in the soil on the shady side of mountains, harvested in February and August. This is the turtle found in mountains, which does not enter water; its shape and size are indefinite. Formulas rarely use turtles; although there are many types of turtles, only two are used in medicine. There is also Yang Gui (Yang Turtle), small with a narrow long tail, said to treat snake venom because it eats snakes; when used for divination, the results are opposite. Wearing the anterior bone of Qin Turtle (Qin Turtle) prevents getting lost in mountains. In Guangzhou, there is [missing character], whose blood effectively treats wounds from poison arrows by the Li people. (Da Guan Vol. 20, Zhenghe p. 413)
Pungent, foul-smelling, warm, non-toxic. Do not allow contact with salt.
The phrase "shop selling pickled fish" refers to its foul smell. The common people call it [missing character] Fish, the character resembles Bao (Abalone), and it is also said to be named so because it is preserved with salt. For medicinal use, one should use the foul-smelling fish preserved with a small amount of salt, but it is unknown exactly which species this is. It is said that skewered ones are also used in medicine, but physicians rarely use them. The current Bao Yu (Pickled Fish) is actually [missing character] Fish, about one chi long. If eaten together with deer meat and those with red eyes, red whiskers, and no gills, it can kill people. There is also Ren Yu (Human Fish), resembling [missing character] but with four legs, sounding like a child; eating it treats jia disease (masses disease). Its fat does not diminish when burned; it was used in the tomb of Qin Shi Huang at Lishan, called Ren Gao (Human Fat). Jingzhou, Linju, and Qingxi have the most of this fish.
