Taste is sweet, sour, and salty; nature is slightly warm; non-toxic. It treats five exhaustions and seven injuries (a general term for various chronic deficiency syndromes), tonifies the middle jiao (middle energizer), eliminates cold-heat pain in the urethra, nourishes the five zang organs, and strengthens yin essence.
It benefits essence and qi, promotes fertility, treats abdominal masses (zheng jia) in women, dispels pathogenic qi from the bladder and lower back pain, and stops dysentery. Long-term use makes the body feel light. It grows in the valleys of Hexi and Yanmen Commandery of Dai.
Collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, dried in the shade.
Dai Commandery and Yanmen belong to Bingzhou; where there are many horses, it is found, said to be generated from the semen of wild horses falling to the ground. When growing, it resembles meat; making mutton soup with it is excellent for tonifying deficiency and fatigue, and it can also be eaten raw. It is most abundant in the region south of the Rouran River. The best quality now comes from Longxi, with a flat and broad shape, soft and moist texture, abundant flowers, and sweet taste. Those from the Northern Kingdom are next, with shorter shapes and fewer flowers. There are also some in Badong and Jianping, but they are inferior. (Da Guan Vol. 7, Zhenghe p. 179)
Taste is sweet; nature is cold; non-toxic. It treats alternating chills and fever, eight types of jaundice, Xiao Ke disease (wasting-thirst syndrome), and tonifies the middle jiao and qi. Long-term use makes the body light and extends longevity. Also known as Gu Cai (Grain Vegetable) and Bai Cao (White Grass). It grows in the valleys of Yizhou. Leaves are collected in spring, stems in summer, flowers in autumn, and roots in winter.
Formulas do not use this herb. This refers to a vegetable that grows in water, which people steam and eat. This plant grows in mountain valleys, so it should not be that one. There is another Bai Cao, whose leaves are made into soup/drink and effectively treat consumption/lao disorders, but its roots and flowers are not used. In Yizhou, there is a bitter vegetable that locals eat exclusively, remaining healthy and free of disease; it is suspected that this might be it. (Da Guan Vol. 6, Zhenghe p. 165)
Taste is sweet; nature is neutral; non-toxic. It treats pathogenic qi in the five zang organs, Bi syndrome (painful obstruction) caused by wind-cold-dampness, tonifies the middle jiao and qi, promotes hair growth turning it black, treats a sensation of emptiness in the heart (Xin Xuan), and addresses low food intake with frequent hunger. Long-term use makes the body light, improves hearing and vision, and prevents aging. It grows in the rivers and marshes of Zhongshan. Collected in February.
There are many species of Artemisia (Hao), but the world does not hear of them being called Bai Hao (White Mugwort). Since herbalists do not use it, no one recognizes it anymore. Given that its therapeutic effects are excellent, further research and inquiry should be conducted. The text on taking Seven Birds Powder states: "When white rabbits eat it, they become immortal." The method is similar to the previously mentioned [herb]. (Da Guan Vol. 6, Zhenghe p. 166)
