[Taihang Rhizome / Podophyllum emodi (Guibai)]
Pungent in flavor, warm or slightly warm in nature, toxic. Primarily used to kill gu poison (poison caused by magical means), gui zhu (a chronic wasting disease attributed to evil spirits), and diseases caused by spirits; it expels evil qi and inauspicious influences, drives out pathogenic factors, and resolves various toxins. It treats cough with throat constriction, mental confusion and agitation caused by wind pathogens, hallucinations due to loss of soul, and removes corneal opacities from the eyes. It kills severe poisons but should not be decocted in soup. Also known as Juexi, Mumu Dougong, Jiujiu, Tianjiu, and Jiedu. Grows in the valleys of Jiuzhen and Wanqu. The roots are harvested in February and August. (Incompatible with wall moss/Yuan Yi.)
Taihang rhizome resembles Irises tectorum (Shegan), is white in color, sweet in taste, warm in nature, and toxic. It treats wind pathogens, gui zhu, and gu poison. The roots consist of nine connected tubers; those with hairs are considered superior and are also called Jiujiu. It grows in mountain valleys and is harvested in August, then dried in the shade. It somewhat resembles Gelsemium elegans (Gouwen). Currently, "Mumu Dougong" resembles Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing), with the root junction resembling a horse's eye—soft and moist; whereas Taihang rhizome resembles Shegan and Atractylodes macrocephala (Zhu). There are two varieties: those from Qiantang and nearby regions have a sweet taste and dense hairs on top, which are the best quality; those from Kuaiji and Wuxing are larger, bitter in taste, lack dense hairs, and are inferior. Although they look similar, their toxicity differs significantly. Currently, physicians mostly use Taihang rhizome and rarely use Dougong, not understanding why such a drastic difference exists.
[Polygonum aviculare / Persicaria capitata (Jixue) - Note: Text says 'Xu' but context implies a diuretic/clearing heat herb, likely referring to a specific variety or typo for another herb like 'Cheqiancao' or similar, but strictly translating 'Xu' as given or implied plant]
Sweet in flavor, cold in nature. Primarily treats xiao ke (wasting-thirst syndrome), external heat pathogens, and stops frequent urination.
One should dig up those that are sweet and pungent; those exposed above ground or floating in water are unsuitable for use.
[Pentaphyll Berry / Humulus scandens related vine (Wuyemei / Longcao)]
Greatly cold in nature. Primarily treats carbuncles and swelling with accumulated heat.
Originally produced in Guangzhou, now also found in the capital and eastern regions. The roots and leaves are indistinguishable, except the seeds are inedible. The root, when crushed and applied externally, is very effective for treating hot swellings. There is also a plant called Pentaphyll Berry (Wuyemei), which grows among human fences, forming vines, and is commonly called Cage Grass (Longcao). Its root, when crushed and applied to carbuncles and furuncles, is also effective.
[Plant referred to as 'Bamboo' or missing character + Bamboo]
Bitter in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats impetigo, scabies, itching, ulcers, hemorrhoids, and kills three types of parasites. It treats erosion of the female genitalia. Grows in the valleys of Donglai. Harvested in May and dried in the shade. It is widespread, growing flat against the ground, with white nodes between flowers, and fine green leaves. People also call it [Missing Character] Zhu. Decoction of its juice given to children is effective for treating ascariasis (roundworm infection).
